WELCOME TO QUEENSTOWN Kia Ora! Welcome to Queenstown. Queenstown is like a miniature raving city, it’s a small town on ‘roids and you’re gonna love it. It’s a highly condensed party zone, a bubble with scenic mountains and a thriving international community. It’s a bit like New York. But instead of the Stature of Liberty we’ve got a statue of a dude called Rees and a sizeable sheep. Okay... maybe it’s not like New York. Queenstown is a cruel mistress, sometimes she loves you, sometimes she gives you hell. But don’t worry, we’re here to guide you through the first few weeks. We both arrived here with a car full of baggage and a few hopes and dreams and now we’re long-time residents with a few tricks up our sleeves. That’s our first tip – however long you plan on being in Queenstown, double it. You’ll hear the same old story again and again form locals; their six-month stint in Queenstown became a six-year-long rollercoaster ride. For your first three months in town, expect to get in trouble at work because you’ll be out on the town heaps. Harness your ability to work hungover and always show up no matter how shitty you feel because rent isn’t cheap when you’ve been sacked for throwing up on the boss or not showing up at all... Master the stir-fry, collect bar stickers and if you meet someone who was ACTUALLY born and bred in Queenstown, shake their hand for good luck (they’re like flipping unicorns around here). There’s a lot of diversity in Queenstown, it’s a melting pot of cultures! Another top tip is to keep you friend count high. Queenstown is a transient place and your best friend today might be gone in a few months. Also, for all its worldly feel, this is still a small town and it pays to be nice and not be a dick. Don’t be a big city Tinder player in a small alpine town. Keep your good karma count high too. Get involved in the local community, interweave yourself into the fabric of Queenstown. Stitch yourself in by joining a sports team, getting involved in an organisation or by volunteering. If you want to stick around for longer than the winter season, this is a must. Show Queenstown a little commitment and you’re more likely to get it back. And if you really want to stay in the loop with everything Queenstown, check out our TV show, LWB TV. It’s Queenstown’s very own, slightly alternative, channel. We do a regular run-down of events, interviews with local characters and #AlmostJournalism pieces covering hot topics around town. Who knows, if you stay here long enough, we might interview you! You can find us on Facebook and YouTube; give it a watch. Henry & Lauren

You can also find whole apartments or houses through local accommodation providers like QAC; this is a good option if you’ve arrived with a group of mates and are planning to stay long-term. Expect to pay $500+ for a two-bedroom furnished flat and $800+ for a three or more bedroom house. VIRGIN’S GUIDE WINTER 2018 11 KAI TIME Hungry after a day in the snow? No worries – Queenstown is chocka with great restaurants and cafes with surprisingly good value. New Zealand is known for its café culture and it’s no different here; try a hipster charcoal latte at Yonder or knock back a strong cup of joe at Joe’s Garage. For the terminally hungover, Red Rock’s $10 all-day breakfast is the only cure. When it comes to burgers, you’ve got to do a Ferg burger at least once, but if you’re on a budget, check out Public – you can get 2 for 1 burgers simply by posting a selfie! Italian restaurant Bella Cucina is also offering a great ski season deal, serving up dough balls, two bowls of pasta, a pizza and salad for just $65. Miss Lucy’s, a rooftop bar above Juicy Snooze, is another pizzeria with great views and brews! For a small(ish) town, Queenstown punches above its weight with vegan and vegetarian options (hint: tap into this crowd on Facebook via @QueenstownVegans). Check out Italian restaurant Farelli’s super tasty vegan menu. Meat connoisseurs on the other hand should head straight to Coalfire where meaty dishes are plentiful and there’s live music Thursday – Saturday. If tequila and burritos are your thing, Sombreros is your new home and those who like sake and ramen will love Tanoshi. As well as great restaurants, Queenstown has a bar for every kind of drinker. Looking for good drinks deals? Head to 1876 or Surreal. Chilled pub vibes? Pub on Wharf or The World Bar. Dancing in the dark? Zephyr, Rhinos, Barmuda or Bungalow. Like quirky live music? It’s got to be The Sherwood. Smith’s is the go-to for craft beers and Winnie’s is our trademark loose party bar. Have fun, but don’t be a dick. Befriend the security staff and head for a pie at Night ‘n Day if you’re too trashed to enter the bar; New Zealand’s drinking rules are stricter than countries like the UK and you’re better off having a pie break than a conviction which could get you booted out of NZ.
