Mr. Bachmann and His Class
In Stadtallendorf, a German city with a complex history of both
excluding and integrating foreigners, teacher Dieter Bachmann offers

of Social Realismin
Depicting the reality of a country or city can be controversial and polarizing, especially in Europe. After all, we all
see the shining parts and want to hide the dark spots. Celebrating the premiere of Stolen Innocence, a realist film
about a young girl who sells her virginity to save her boyfriend from debt, we would like to present you with three
prominent directors of the genre.
Ken Loach He is probably one of the greatest British directors of all time and a
paramount figure in independent cinema. Born in June 1936, Ken Loach started his career
directing at the BBC, with ten contributions to the BBC’s Wednesday Play anthology series
that include the docudramas Up the Junction (1965), Cathy Come Home (1966) and In
Two Minds (1967). Despite his success, especially with his 1969 film Kes, his naturalistic,
social-realist directing style caused some of his films to be censored and left him out
of the spotlight for a decade. However, the 1980s and 1990s saw the production of a
series of critically acclaimed films such as Hidden Agenda, Carla’s Song, and Land and
Freedom. During this period he was also awarded prizes at the Cannes Film Festival on
three occasions. In recent years, Looking for Eric has been one of his most successful films
– its cast includes former professional footballer Eric Cantona.
Andrea Arnold Andrea Arnold is an English Academy Award-winning filmmaker and
former actress. After retiring from her career as a television presenter, Arnold studied
directing at the prestigious AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles and trained in screenwriting
at the PAL Labs in Kent. Her early short films included Milk (1998) and Dog (2001). She
won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film for Wasp, in 2003. She was also
named a Screen International Star of Tomorrow. Arnold won the 2007 BAFTA Award for
Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer for directing Red Road. . Her
2009 film Fish Tank premiered at the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, where she once again won
the Jury Prize. The film also went on to win the BAFTA Award for Outstanding British Film
in 2010. Almost all her films, including American Honey, depict the reality of teenagers in
struggling conditions in first-world societies.
Karel Reisz Born in Chechoslovakia, Reisz was a filmmaker active in
post-World War II Britain, and one of the pioneers of the new realist strain
in British cinema during the 1950s and 1960s. Reisz was a founder member
of the Free Cinema documentary film movement. The French Lieutenant’s
Woman was probably the most successful of his later films.

and seems to be the victim of a vicious criminal, we have selected the stories of three real evil men who were behind some of the
most devious assassinations in history. These are three real serial killers!
Mikhail Popkov
Nicknamed “The Werewolf”, Mikhail Popkov is a Russian serial
killer and rapist who attacked dozens of women between
1992 and 2010 in Angarsk, Irkutsk, and Vladivostok in
Siberia. His number of victims reaches so far 78 but there are
suspicions that the number could be higher. Popkov’s crimes
were motivated by suspicions that his wife had committed
adultery. His victims were all women between the ages of 16
and 40 apart from one male, a policeman. The female victims
were prostitutes or inebriated young women, who Popkov
considered immoral.
Ted Bundy
Born in Vermont, this American serial killer is infamous for his cruel acts
that not only include murder but also kidnapping, rape, and much more.
Ted Bundy assaulted and killed numerous young women during the 1970s.
After more than a decade of denials, he confessed to 30 homicides that
he committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978. However, the true
number of victims is unknown and possibly higher.
Luis Garavito
Known as “La Bestia” (The Beast),
this Colombian man became one
of the serial killers with the most
proven kills in modern days with a
total of 138 victims. Some sources
claim this number could reach
the 200+ threshold. Luis Alfredo
Garavito is a child murderer, torture
killer, and rapist who attacked
boys between eight and 16 years
old, over seven years in Colombia
and neighboring countries. He is
suspected of murdering over 300
victims, mostly street children.

Celebrating the premiere of the crime drama Murder Town, about a killing committed in a small peaceful town, we have selected
three must-see series based on real crimes and criminals.
The Fall – United Kingdom
Starring Gillian Anderson (the legendary Agent Scully from The X Files) and
Jamie Dornan (from Shadows in the Sun and Fifty Shades of Grey), The Fall
is a British production filmed and set in Belfast, Northern Ireland. In this
series, Detective Stella Gibson and serial killer Paul Spector play a game of
cat and mouse as she works on it to put the criminal behind bars.
When it came time to create the series’ terrifying killer, its creators took
their inspiration from two real-life murderers. Strangler Dennis Rader and
Co-Ed Killer Ed Kemper were both an inspiration to create Jamie Dornan’s
scary criminal, Paul Spector.
Mindhunter
This hit series might be fictional, but it’s based on the true story of former
FBI agent John E. Douglas, who pioneered criminal profiling at the FBI.
The character of Holden Ford gives viewers a glimpse at John’s career,
which involved interviewing some of the most dangerous American serial
killers of his decades at the Bureau. On the show, the murderers have been
fictionalized, but they’re still based on real people.
For Mindhunter, Cameron Britton obtained a nomination in the Outstanding
Guest Actor a Drama Series category at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards.
Peaky Blinders
The Peaky Blinders were a real-life gang from Birmingham, England, who
operated from the late 1800s through the start of World War I. The critically
acclaimed British show of the same name took its inspiration from these
real-life criminals. Primarily set in the same city, Peaky Blinders follows
the exploits of the Shelby crime family. Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later, The
Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk) plays Tommy Shelby, the gang’s
leader, and Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Event Horizon) as Chester Campbell
is a commissioned detective from Belfast who is tasked with suppressing
the gang.
The series has won numerous awards, including a BAFTA Television Award
for Best Drama Series, and has been extended for five seasons.

Celebrating the airing of Shattered, a French TV drama about kidnapping and revenge, we would like to present
you with three must-watch productions on the subject that nobody should miss.
Crisis
What can be a worst scenario than the son of the United States president
being kidnapped? That is the problem faced by Secret Service Special
Agent Marcus Finley. The series follows the story of a national crisis in
America. During a school trip, students of Ballard High School, attended
by the children of Washington, D.C.’s elite, including the President’s son,
are the victims of an ambush. A national emergency ensues and Secret
Service agent Marcus Finley finds himself at the center of it on his first
day on the job.
The Missing
One of the most riveting series produced in the UK in recent years, The
Missing is an anthology drama created for the BBC. The first eight-part
series focuses on the search for a missing boy in France and starred
Tchéky Karyo as Julien Baptiste, the French detective who leads the
case, with James Nesbitt and Frances O’Connor as the boy’s parents.
The second series is about a missing girl in Germany. In 2014, police
tell Sam and Gemma Webster, whose daughter Alice went missing in
2003, that Alice has reappeared. Alice claims she had been held captive
with Sophie Giroux, a French girl who disappeared about the same
time. Retired French detective Julien Baptiste, who was in charge of the
Giroux investigation, cannot resist becoming involved again and travels
to Germany and Iraq to find answers.
Safe
Set in England and starring Michael C. Hall, Safe tells the story of
Englishman Tom Delaney, a pediatric surgeon and widowed father of
two teenage daughters struggling to connect to his daughters as they
still grieve the loss of his wife from cancer one year prior. After his
16-year-old daughter Jenny goes missing, Tom ultimately uncovers a
web of secrets as he frantically searches for her.
The series began filming in Manchester, Liverpool, and Cheshire in July
2017. It consists of eight episodes that premiered in 190 countries in
May 2018.
