UVA's Storm Drain Mural Project was inspired by other projects such as Up Stream
Art, Blue Water Baltimore, and Drain SmART Arkansas, and by the following cities:
City of Thornton, City of Malibu, City of Sioux Falls, City of Pueblo, City of Keizer, and
the City of Richmond.

CALL FOR ARTISTS
Protect the Planet by Paige Dirksen
City of Fayetteville

UVA Clean Water, in collaboration with the Environmental Stewardship
Subcommittee, is calling for artists to express themselves through public art in
the form of small-scale, storm drain murals. Artists are encouraged to
aesthetically transform storm drains from functional infrastructure to engaging
works of art. Through these murals, artists will highlight the importance of
water quality protection and the positive impact we can all have in our
  community.

            WHY PAINT STORM DRAINS ?
Storm drains lead directly to our waterways. Every time it rains, trash, oil, chemicals, and
other pollutants on our streets are washed into storm drains and flow directly to local
streams and rivers. Stormwater pollution can significantly degrade fish and wildlife habitat,
our drinking water, and recreational opportunities. By painting storm drains we are
reminding UVA and Charlottesville community members that our streets on Grounds are
connected to our local streams and rivers.
