15 Biotechnology and Pharma in Spain 3rd biggest region in Europe in terms of the number of qualified R&D professionals Figures for Spain ─ 1,715 companies state that they have worked on biotechnology in 2010 with 163,526 employees ─ Approx 30% of biotech and Pharma companies in Spain are based in Catalonia Opportunities in Spain? ─ UK CROs, lab equipment and services for research provide opportunities for UK companies as Spain has a good reputation for R&D and clinical trials. ─ The majority of biotech and Pharma companies have good English and are actively looking for international alliances and collaborations. ─ Products sold in pharmacies – recent UKTI Barcelona event showed interest in new innovative goods which are priced correctly for the Spanish market – recommended route to market is through a local distributor.
16 Healthcare Sector Spain is the 9th country in the world ranking for healthcare product consumption Figures 2012 in Spain ― 873 hospitals with 163,063 beds (2012) ― Private healthcare: 26,643 M€ in 2011 (2.5% of GDP - 27% total spend) ― Public healthcare: 72,217 M€ in 2011 (6,8% of GDP - 73% total spend) Opportunities in Spain? ― By 2050 Spain is expected to be the country in the world with the oldest population. An ageing population means that in the medium to long-term healthcare spending is likely to continue to rise. Opportunities for UK companies includes provision to nursing homes and home-care products. ― Introduction of IT in the healthcare sector: new medical record processing, electronic prescriptions, remote patient follow-up, interconnection between centres and globalization.
