November 12, 2020 How does this work? The semifinal winners progress to the final, while the defeated teams will go into a third-place play-off. If the scores are level at the end of normal time then there is extra time, when teams are allowed a fourth substitution. If the scores are still level after the 30 minutes of extra time, the match goes into a penalty shootout. Interestingly, goal-line technology will be utilised throughout. Where will the matches be played? FC Porto’s 50,033 capacity Estádio do Dragão will be the site of the first semifinal between Portugal and Switzerland. The final will also be played here. Ronaldo and Juventus were playing their match versus Valencia on September 19, when Ronaldo was judged to have pulled Jeison Murillo’s hair, for which he was given a red card and pulled from the match. This is the first red card that he has received in 154 games! Juventus won 2-0, however Ronaldo was reduced to tears as he was banned from that game, and the next one against Young Boys on October 2. Fans have their fingers crossed that he is not banned from playing against Manchester United on October 23. That will be a big loss for football fans around the world. Did he pull another player’s hair? It is hard to tell from the youtube footage, and there are a lot of people who think that the referees made the wrong call. Let’s wait and see what happens. November 12, 2020 introduction to the new UEFA Nations League. The UEFA Nations League is a new football competition for national teams in Europe that takes place every two years in between the World Cup and EURO tournaments. The 2018-19 season will be the first edition of this competition with the finals being played in June 2019. While the new league format confuses fans as well as footballers and officials, this article will help to explain what you need to know! Who is involved? The teams of 55 countries who are member associations of Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) will take part. They will be divided into 4 leagues – A, B, C, and D based on their coefficient (the statistics used for ranking and seeding teams). The highest ranked teams will be in League A while the lowest ranked will be in League D. This means that countries will have the chance to play similarly ranked teams. Every league is divided into four groups made up of three or four teams. Group winners gain promotion and bottom ranked teams get relegated to the league below. Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. November 12, 2020 Why was it created? The new format was created to replace meaningless friendlies with increased competition. ‘Friendly’ or ‘exhibition’ games are those that are not part of a competition and are used to experiment with tactics and try new players. Lower ranked teams who used to struggle against much higher ranked teams will now get a chance to play in more balanced and fair matches. Previously some of the weaker teams would repeatedly lose because they faced much tougher competition, and this did not help them to learn and progress much. Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. November 12, 2020 LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND – JANUARY 24: A general view of the UEFA Nations League trophy during the UEFA Nations League Draw on January 24, 2018 in Lausanne, Switzerland. (Photo by Stephen McCarthy – UEFA/UEFA via Sportsfile) The new format will be more competitive and exciting for players and supporters alike. Top ranked teams will have a new trophy to play for while lower level teams are also given an added opportunity to sneak in and qualify for the EUROs. While most international friendlies will be replaced, there will still be space in the calendar for friendlies especially for the top teams to face other teams from outside Europe. So don’t worry you can still watch the top European teams take on the likes of Brazil and Argentina. When is it taking place? The 55 teams play each other home and away in September, October and November over the course of six matchdays. All fixtures will take place within the existing international match calendar meaning that there is no extra burden on any teams or players. Matchday 1 officially kicked off from 6-8 September with 23 matches being played. Matchday 2 is currently underway till 11 September. See the list below for the full schedule. November 12, 2020 EURO Qualification through UEFA Nations League If a country fails to qualify for the EUROs the traditional way, they could still qualify through the Nations League. 4 group winners from each leagues A, B, C, and D (16 teams in all) will play off in March 2020 to secure one of the four remaining places. If a country has already qualified, their place will go to the next highest ranked team from their Nations League tier. How can you watch the games live? In India the matches are shown on Sony SIX and streamed online at www.sonyliv.com. We navigate via Google Maps, get our news and weather online, have phones and other devices that help us to schedule meetings, remind us to do our homework, and keep track of our extra-curricular activities. And that’s just on the organisational side! We have bluetooth speakers and headphones, watches that measure our heart rates and sleeping schedules, tell us how many steps we have taken, and how many calories we have lost. Yet more technology can be used to keep track of our loved ones medicines, and our food and nutritional requirements. It is almost impossible to imagine our daily routine without any of our gadgets! Let’s now take a look at ‘wearable technology’, and how it is being used in another area – that of sports. What is Wearable Technology? This is technology that one can wear. Their trainers help them to track their performance, but there are wearables that offer more accurate statistics related to performance during play. They also help in assessing injury. We can’t wait until the next round in Qatar in 2022, but until then, here are the highlights from this year’s tournament. 69 goals from 64 matches and only 1 goalless draw A total of 9 goals were scored in the world cup after the 90th-minute mark, which is the most so far in the history The defending champions Germany were knocked out early and so were the heavyweights like Spain, Portugal and Argentina France reigned supreme and edged out Croatia 4-2 in the final. The final in Moscow saw an own goal, a penalty through the Video Referee and many more crazy moments including a major mistake from champions French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. 1 – There was just one goalless draw at the 2018 World Cup (France vs Denmark), the fewest at any World Cup tournament since 1954, when there were none. November 12, 2020 5. Hirving Lozano – Mexico Lozano stunned the world when he scored the only goal as Mexico beat defending champions Germany 1-0 in the first game of Group F. That was the only goal scored by the 22-year-old but what caught everyone’s attention was the pace. Lozano is on Dutch side PSV Eindhoven’s roster and is attracting major interest from Premier League Clubs. The Mexican can command anything over 30 Million Euros from clubs like Manchester City and Chelsea. 4. Benjamin Pavard – France 22-year-old Benjamin Pavard scored a stunning goal against Argentina in the Round of 16 but that wasn’t the only reason why he features on this list. The right back from VfB Stuttgart was one of the strongest pillars in France’s defence. He was called up to play for the national side in November last year and since then the curly-haired defender has cemented his berth. Expect him to be the centre of attention from clubs like Real Madrid & Bayern Munich, 3. Aleksandr Golovin – Russia The 22-year-old from Russia was tipped to be a potential star at the World Cup and he didn’t disappoint. In the opening game against Saudi Arabia, a blitz from Golovin ensured that the scoreboard read 5-0. A stunning free-kick goal and 2 assists meant that the CSKA Moscow midfielder suddenly became the toast of the nation. Premier League side Arsenal is one Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. November 12, 2020 of the potential destinations for the 22-year-old from Moscow with a fee which could be over 25 million Euros. 2. Jordan Pickford – England A lot of football pundits were baffled when English Premier League side Everton paid 30 million Euros for Jordan Pickford but the England stopper justified his price tag at the World Cup. His moment came in the Round of 16 tie against Colombia which England won to register their first ever win on penalties in the World Cup. Pickford grew in confidence through the world cup and now it will be tough for Everton to keep the 24-year-old away from prospective buyers. 1. Kylian Mbappe – France The Best Young player of the World Cup is already is a superstar and he confirmed his stardom by winning the World Cup at the age of 19 for France. He is also the first teenager since Pele in 1958 to score in a World Cup final. He scored 4 goals at the World Cup and is attracting attention from Real Madrid to replace Ronaldo at Santiago Bernabeu. French club Paris St- Germain have already signed Mbappe on Loan and are all set to pay close to 180 Million Euros to keep the Frenchman in Paris as per agreement. But Real Madrid & rest of the big spending clubs might just break the bank to sign the star. 19y 207d – Kylian Mbappé is the 2nd youngest player to score in a @FIFAWorldCup final, after Pelé (17y 249d) in 1958 for Brazil. November 12, 2020 Tham Luang Caves in Thailand. As the world watches the World Cup excitement from Russia, another heart-wrenching football story is being played out in the Tham Luang caves in Northern Thailand. On June 23, 2018, 12 boys in the Wild Boars football team, and their coach, started exploring the long cave system after practice during a torrential downpour. When her son did not return home that evening, one of the mothers alerted local authorities who immediately started a search for the boys. Soon they found bicycles belonging to the boys at the mouth of the cave. It became apparent that the boys were trapped inside because the heavy rain had flooded the cave. Many feared the worst and parents set up a vigil outside the cave. Experienced divers went into the cave twice but had to retreat as water levels were high. But then 12 days later, a miracle! Two divers reached an inner sanctum of the cave and discovered the team alive! Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. All rights reserved. November 12, 2020 Photo Credit: Press Association; Infographic from PA Graphics The challenge to get them out remained. Options included: having them wait for months for the water to recede, drilling through the top of the cave (dangerous and time-consuming), or training the boys to swim and dive (many couldn’t do either). Food, medicine and oxygen lines were sent down to help them survive, and pumps were siphoning gallons of water, but the incessant rain was not helping, and tragically, one of the divers lost his life trying to reach the boys. Finally, authorities used a break in the weather to begin a risky rescue. On July 8, to the sound of deafening cheers, four of the boys were brought to safety by courageous divers. The illustration below shows how the children were brought out. Operations were halted at night and resumed the next day. On the second day of the mission, four more boys were rescued, leaving four remaining boys and their soccer coach. We are hopeful that they will be brought out safely in a third and final mission today. Copyright © 2018 CURRENTKIDS LLP. All rights reserved.
