The Criminology Student Conference is back for its 8th year! After hosting over 2,000 students in 2018, we've packed this year with leading experts and real-world insights into criminal investigations, the criminal justice system and discrimination. Hear from our academic experts... Dr Zoe Walkington: The Psychology of lie detection Take a look at the criminal investigations and the pressures and issues affecting both suspects and police investigators. Consider some of the key areas where psychologists have studied investigative processes; students will 'have a go' at certain elements of an investigation, for example, finding out how good they are at detecting deception in others. Dr Irene Zempi: Hate crime in the cyber world We live in a climate of hate, both in the physical world and the cyber world. The internet, and specifically, social media companies including Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, have created new platforms for abuse. Following events including the Brexit vote, the murder of MP Jo Cox, the Manchester/London terrorist attacks, there has been a significant increase in hate speech online. In this talk, Irene will discuss the nature and scope of the problem, as well as the implications of cyber hate crime for victims, their families and wider communities. 14 HOW TO BOOK hoddereducation.co.uk/SociologyAutumn2019 01295 222777

When she got in too deep in the family's operations she fled back home to Blackpool, telling her daughter her father was a good-for-nothing petty thief. Marisa's father was determined to get her back, and when she returned to Italy she fell in love with her father's chief henchman and eloped with him. Soon, she was neck-deep in the family's terrifying operations with no way to escape. Then, suddenly, an auntie turned supergrass and Marisa, her father and 90 other members of the Di Giovine family were imprisoned in a 6-month trial that gripped Italy.
