Tubestock Trader November 2020 Hypoestes aristata Dahlia imperialis Dahlia imperialis 'Double White' 75mm 'White' 75mm Clive’s Comments It is now late October and we are still in lockdown in Melbourne. Retail and hospitality are still all closed and we still have restricted travel and are not allowed to visit other households. There have been some minor easing but emotionally we are still living under tight government control. Today they announced that the police will be flying drones over the suburbs to make sure no-one is having visitors around for a BBQ and to watch the football. The system is hinting things might change next week but there is no promise. The Premier has also indicated that he may keep the 25km travel limit and compulsory masks in place for a long time – until he feels he doesn’t need to have them in place. Not looking nice for the short term future. We all know the arguments around disease control and how bad Covid is. We also have discussed the emotional effects of being locked down and loss of business and incomes but what we didn’t foresee was the antagonism between Australians. There is a ‘distrust’ of Victorians in many parts of NSW, Queensland and SA. There is a ‘distrust’ between regional and metro Victoria as Melbourne stays in lockdown and regional Victoria is relaxed. Melbourne is being pushed as a ‘centre of Covid’ even though our daily numbers have been under five for a week. Doesn’t feel good for interstate travel. Now we are getting violent and nasty actions from the people who support the Premier. Anyone in public who criticises him will get attached in Social Media and even in person. I thought I lived in a country that took people on face value and allowed each of us to have our own opinions. This is not a good sign for the prospects of a return to normal and I worry the anger will hang around for a long time. Most of this stems from the mismanagement of the whole pandemic by the Victorian leadership team – elected and appointed. I pray that the restrictions ease off significantly over... NEW LINE! Maybe then non-Melbournians will stop seeing us as a cause of disease spreading. Maybe we will be welcome to travel again. As we all know, weather is such an important part of our industry. Water is critical to enabling people to garden safely and farmers to prosper. It is also a problem when we get too much to often. This would have been a bad spring for Victoria if not for Covid driven gardeners. Most weekends since August we have had cold wet Saturdays and barely nicer Sundays. In a normal year this would have kept people at home rather than in the nurseries and meant a bleak spring. Looking at the long-term weather it looks like we are going to have above average rainfall between now and autumn, especially along the eastern seaboard. This is great for the farming community and those towns damaged by fire earlier this year. It will help the forests regenerate and mean that fire affected homes can re-plant. It should ensure our dams, rivers and lakes will all get a flush of new water and the environment will benefit. In Melbourne it is hard to look and plan for 2021 but most other parts of Australia it is time to plan for autumn and spring 2021 sales. We have seen what has been the best trading conditions for the industry in living memory. Much of this was initially driven by people looking for things to do during Lockdown. This quickly changed to people wanting to improve their homes, grow their own food and freshen the house. We hope that a good percentage of these customers will keep gardening. Covid means that international travel will be significantly restricted in 2021 and even domestic travel will be cut. Many people are quite frightened about Covid and that will remain so for a year or two. All this means we should have lots of people regularly working in their gardens and growing more and more indoor plants. The question we need to answer is how to maximise the increased demand. We have developed an understanding of our consumer market place over the last thirty years. This was already changing with an increased number of younger people enjoying the rewards of growing plants. We knew what sort of plants would get public attention and felt we could predict the trends. However with all the new gardeners it is much harder to know what they will want. We can assume that the new plant buyers will be swayed by different marketing. They will have a lot less knowledge of how to grow plants, where to grow them and what problems they will have. They will also come with a lot less baggage of what are good and bad plants, what are trendy and what aren’t. Many will have memories of gardening with their parents and have some fondness for the older style plants that they grew up with. Many will be influenced by the story behind the plant and will also be aware of climate change and the possible effects on plant growth. Most will be eagerly wanting help and advice. They will be thirsty for knowledge and understanding. 2021 will be a new year in plant production and retailing. The nurseries that are quickest to pick up on the trends and drivers of plant selection will do very well and the rest will follow. At the moment we are all playing catch up and just trying to get stock on the ground. We should get this done by Christmas but we as the propagators we need to be planning for next autumn and even the following spring. We all know the frustration of not having stock of plants that are suddenly in demand – especially so when they are plants we used to grow in numbers. Just look at the prices for Monstera at the moment. They are getting crazy prices and are in short supply. Same with many similar indoor plants. Which will be the next must have plant group? Hard to predict but a better problem than struggling to move overgrown plants. Clive Larkman
