R V I E W OVE diversity for a io B re rot e cting able Futu P in Susta We share our planet with millions of different species. This huge variety of plants, animals, insects and the places they live is called biodiversity. Together, they provide us with essentials like food, drinking water, clean air, medicines and shelter. In the past 40 years, wildlife has declined drastically by 60% and is expected to drop further to 67% by 2020. Habitat destruction and over-exploitation of our natural resources are primary causes for this loss of nature. MSIG Insurance seeks to go beyond their core purpose of protecting the things that people hold dear. In its mission to secure a sound future for the planet, MSIG launched the MSIG BIODIVERSITY TRAIL which aims to raise awareness about the protection of biodiversity for a sustainable future. The MSIG BIODIVERSITY TRAIL is a fun, engaging and educational trail where you can learn more about the biodiversity we have right here within Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site - the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This trail allows people from all different walks of life to come together, connect back to nature and experience a different side of Singapore! Using the District mobile app, the trail will take you through strategically placed checkpoints and challenges where you can pick up interesting facts about local biodiversity. For instance, did you know that the Singapore Botanic Gardens was lauded for having the world’s largest orchid collection? It displays over 1000 species and 2000 hybrids of orchids in its gardens while also housing and protecting critically endangered trees, like the Johore Fig tree. We hope this free and easy-to-explore biodiversity trail will help you understand the riches our environment provides us and inspire you to take action to protect it.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens still has one of the oldest remnants of primary rainforests in Singapore. The 6.2 hectares of rainforest is home to an array of species including the critically endangered Brown Tree Snail. Over the last 50 years, we have lost about half the world’s original forest! The loss of trees will cause a higher increase in global warming, or climate change. In order to maintain a healthy condition of our planet, we must protect the existing biodiversity to ensure a sustainable future for people and nature. 6 #MSIGBiodiversityTrail #TrailforNature

The Singapore Botanic Gardens houses one of the largest orchids in the world - The Tiger Orchid. This species, with its vividly coloured flowers that are marked like the coat of a tiger, is unfortunately extinct in Singapore’s wild. Many other plant species are also facing extinction due to habitat loss to make way for urban development. An impaired ecosystem could eventually put our health and our livelihoods at risk. 11 #MSIGBiodiversityTrail #TrailforNature

It is believed that only 15 specimens exist in the wild today. It is used in medicine for sores and skin ailments. Apart from medicine and food, our forest also provides us with materials like paper, wood and oil. A high consumption and wastage of these products mean more trees will be cut down to meet the demand. So let’s reduce our wastage and consume more responsibly! 12 #MSIGBiodiversityTrail #TrailforNature
