Say hello to your new organic friend! Nearly 50% of the stuff that goes in your rolling bin for waste collection is organic waste. By composting, you’ll significantly reduce both your greenhouse gas emissions and the amount of contaminated runoff created by organic matter in garbage dumps. Do your part With the new bylaw, every resident who receives a brown bin must use it for their organic waste. Organic waste will no longer be accepted in regular garbage bins. 3
Feed it! PUT IT IN YOUR BROWN BIN If the answer to any of the following three questions is yes, you can put it in your brown rolling bin! 1 Is it food waste? 2 Is it gardening waste? 3 Is it used paper or cardboard that had food on or in it? Tak TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BRUTUS To keep your bin clean • Line the bottom of the bin with newspaper or cardboard to absorb any liquids. • Keep meat and other smelly waste in the freezer until collection day. • Try to remember to put your bin out every collection day. • Rinse your bin regularly and use that water to water your garden. It’s full of minerals! • Store your bin in the shade if possible. To keep animals and insects away • Wrap food waste in newspaper or a paper bag. • Apply a bit of menthol chest rub on the cover and around the air holes to keep the critters away. • Sprinkle with salt, vinegar, or baking soda if you see any insects. To save on storage space • Team up with your neighbors to share bins. • Opt for a smaller garbage bin. 7

Use your brown rolling bin for organic waste that you can’t put in your compost, like leftovers, meat, bones, dairy products, weeds, etc. The two make a great team! Grasscycling and leaf mulching We encourage you to grasscycling and leaf mulching. It’s easy! All you have to do is leave your grass clippings and cut-up leaves on the ground.
