north-east Itinerary nevers saint-Bernadette, from Lourdes to Nevers B orn in Lourdes in 1844, Bernadette Soubirous was 14 years old when the Virgin Mary appeared to her at the Rock of Massabielle. On 7 July 1866, to achieve her desire for a religious life, Bernadette arrived at the Saint Gildard Convent and joined the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, whom she knew from the hospice school in Lourdes. Bernadette remained at the order’s motherhouse in Nevers for 13 years. Her simple, ordinary life was entirely devoted to God and to others. When she died on 16 April 1879, her body was interred in a small chapel in the convent grounds. Found to be intact in 1909, it was finally laid to rest in 1925 within a shrine in the chapel of the Saint Gildard Convent. On 8 December 1933, the Church presented Bernadette to all God’s people as an evangelical sign and she was declared a saint.
