International Labour Day: 1 May Labour Day or International Workers' Day is observed each year on the first day of May to celebrate achievements of the working class. The day, also called 'May Day', is also observed as a public holiday in many countries. On 1 May, 1886, labour unions in the US decided to go on a strike demanding that workers should not be made to work for more than 8 hours a day. Just three days after the strike began, a blast occurred in Chicago's Haymarket Square leaving many dead. To honor those who died in the blast, the International Socialist Conference declared 1 May as a day designated for labourers. US places India on priority watch list for intellectual property protection The US placed India on the ‘Priority Watch List’ for lack of sufficient measurable improvements to its intellectual property framework on the “long-standing” and “new challenges” that have negatively affected American right holders over the past year. The US placed 10 countries, including some of its major trading partners like India and China, on the list. The countries placed on the list by the Trump administration on intellectual property (IP) related issues are Algeria, Argentina, Chile, China, India, Indonesia, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and Venezuela.
According to the World Intellectual Property Right Organization, the Intellectual Property is the creation of literary and artistic works, symbols, names, images. India at 53rd position in budget transparency, accountability India has been placed at 53rd position among 117 nations in terms of budget transparency and accountability, according to the Open Budget Survey. The survey, which was conducted by International Budget Partnership (IBP), has provided India's Union Budget process a transparency score of 49 out of 100, which is higher than the global average of 45. New Zealand tops the chart with a score of 87. The survey, covering 117 countries, rates the level of budget transparency across countries on a scale of 0-100, based on several normative, internationally comparable indicators. Ramayan becomes highest viewed entertainment program globally The popular television show ‘Ramayan’ based on Valmiki’s Epic Ramayana has become the highest viewed entertainment program globally. It registered record breaking viewership and created a world record when 77 million people watched the show in a single day.
The record was created on the 16th of April at 9 p.m. Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan aired on Doordarshan for the first time between 1987 and 1988. Prasar Bharti CEO Shashi Shekhar announced last month that his team was working out the logistics of telecasting the Ramayana after the nationwide lockdown was announced. GI tag to Manipur black rice, Gorakhpur terracotta Chak-Hao, the black rice of Manipur and the Gorakhpur terracotta have bagged the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Chak-Hao, a scented glutinous rice which has been in cultivation in Manipur over centuries, is characterised by its special aroma. It is normally eaten during community feasts and is served as Chak-Hao kheer. The terracotta work of Gorakhpur is a centuries-old traditional art form, where the potters make various animal figures like, horses, elephants, camels, goats, ox, etc. with hand-applied ornamentation. AYURAKSHA-Corona Se Jung- Delhi Police Ke Sang launched by All India Institute of Ayurveda The All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), under the Ministry of AYUSH and Delhi Police organised the AYURAKSHA programme for Delhi Police personnel at New Delhi. The joint programme aims to fight against corona through simple and time tested Ayurveda immunity boosting measures. These measures are as per the advisory issued by the Ministry of AYUSH.
The recommended formulations like Chyawanaprasha (Amla as main content), Anu Taila and SanshamaniVati (prepared from Guduchi) have simple herbs which are time tested and scientifically proven for enhancing immunity. Delhi Police has come forward with a proposal for maintaining the health of front line COVID warriors like Delhi police personnel through Ayurveda immunity boosting measures. RBI extends regulatory benefits under SLF-MF scheme to all banks The Reserve Bank of India extended regulatory benefits to all banks including those deploying their own resources to extend liquidity support to the mutual funds under the Special Liquidity Facility for Mutual Funds SLF-MF scheme. Earlier in the week, the Reserve Bank had announced Rs 50,000-crore SLF-MF scheme to bailout the mutual funds facing redemption pressure. The scheme was announced in the backdrop of Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund deciding to shut several schemes. Under the SLF-MF scheme will be extended to all banks, irrespective of whether they avail funding from the Reserve Bank or deploy their own resources under the SLF-MF scheme. The output of eight core infrastructure industries shrank by 6.5 percent in March due to fall in production of crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertiliser, steel, cement and electricity amid the coronavirus lockdown. The eight core sectors had expanded by 5.8 per cent in March 2019. Production of crude oil dropped 5.5 percent; production of natural gas tanked 15.2 percent; growth of refinery products slipped 0.5 percent; fertiliser production dropped 11.9 percent, steel production declined 13 percent, cement production slumped 24.7 percent and electricity generation plunged 7.2 percent. Coal production fell 4.1 percent in March, from 9.1 per cent in March 2019. During the April-March 2019-20 period, core industries recorded 0.6 percent growth, against 4.4 percent in 2018-19. Former Axis Bank CEO Shikha Sharma named advisor to Google Pay India Google Pay India named Shikha Sharma, former Axis Bank CEO, as an advisor to digital payments app. Google Pay has been leading UPI Payments adoption in India. During the ongoing lockdown, Google launched its “Nearby Spot” to help users in Bengaluru find local stores selling essentials like groceries that are open, amid the lockdown. The Nearby Spot will be launched in Hyderabad, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune, and Delhi soon. Manipuri Doctor Conferred 'Order of Rising Sun' by Japan
Thangjam Dhabali Singh from Manipur has been conferred the 'Order of Rising Sun' by the Japan government for promoting a better understanding of Japan in India and deepening ties between the two countries. The 'Order of the Rising Sun' is conferred on persons with achievements in international relations, promotion of Japanese culture, environmental preservation, welfare or achievements in their fields. It was constituted by Japanese Emperor Meiji in 1875. Thangjam Dhabali Singh is an allopathic doctor by profession and founder of the Manipur Tourism Forum (MTF). Singh had organised the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Imphal of the Second World War. Several Japanese citizens, including officials from the Embassy of Japan in India, had participated in the event. Legendary footballer Chuni Goswami passes away at 82 Legendary Footballer Chuni Goswami died in Kolkata after prolonged illness. Chuni Goswami was the captain of the gold medal winning Indian football team of Jakarta Asiad held in 1962. He was awarded Arjun, Padmasree and several others prestigious awards for his outstanding contributions in the field of Sports . He received Mohun Bagan Ratna awards in 2005. The West Bengal Government conferred him the highest civilian award Banga Bibhusan in 2013.
