Thrust & Parry Parkview Congregational Church UCC Newsletter- September 2020 edition Phone: 303-366-5224 email: office@parkviewucc.org website: www.parkviewucc.org From the Interim Pastor Social Media and the Future of the Church Did you know that there is a growing field of study that focusses on how people choose which church to visit? Decades ago, if you had moved into a new community and were looking for a church, you would have sought a recommendation from a neighbor or co-worker, or you would have simply “made the rounds,” starting with the congregation closest to your home. But today, folks searching for a church to visit or join are far more discriminating, because they must be. Millennials are busier than any previous generation. They have no time or energy to spend pursuing something without first doing their homework. And that means that prospective church-goers these days spend a good deal of time researching a church on social media before actually reaching out to a congregation. CODIV-19 pulled many churches into the world of social media while their members were still kicking and screaming. Parkview found itself playing catch-up with churches that already had a strong social media presence and had offered online worship experiences long before the pandemic hit. We struggled to begin worshipping on Zoom quickly and with limited technical knowledge and resources. The members of our IT team, along with Susan Sadler, Mark Wideman and others, have gone above and beyond expectations to get us to where we are now. And still, we are not satisfied. We continue to want a broader and stronger presence on social media. We are starting to understand that social media is the future of Parkview and that we must be more diligent in learning to better utilize it to get our message out beyond our walls. Our new Communication Coordinator, Eric Mulder, is a graphic designer by training and by trade. Staff Resources was intentional in attracting a candidate to this position who could help us strengthen and broaden our online presence through marketing Parkview better on social media. He will be improving our church website and Facebook page, and will be establish a presence for us on Instagram and Twitter. Now, if you do not know what all of that is or what it means for Parkview, you are not alone. I do not understand all of it either, but I am ready and willing to learn. And Eric does understand it all very well and is ready to help us. If you are a “social media” nerd or you aspire to become one (like me), you will want to keep close watch for Parkview’s growing social media presence; you will soon begin noticing new designs and seeing more information when you visit our Parkview website and our Facebook page. These improvements are intended to attract more young adults to our church, which is the demographic we most need to reach if we are to thrive through the 21st century. Eric plans to be in the church office Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 10 am and 2 pm, so feel free to stop by and introduce yourself. Eric will also be at the church on Sunday mornings working with our Zoom broadcasts. Eric, we welcome you to Parkview and are looking forward to working with you! - Jill From the Moderator - What is Just Peace? My ten-year-old self remembers coming in from the outdoors to get a snack and hearing our mom call from her sewing room, “Who’s that?” And answering her, “It’s just me, Mom, coming in to get a glass of water.” I could have said it is only me and it would have carried the same meaning. Try saying it to yourself, “It’s only peace.” Try it with different inflections- “It’s ONLY peace. “It’s only PEACE. It’s only peace! It’s only peace?” No matter how we say it when we substitute only for just, it is so minimalized and trivial. “It’s only peace” does not have much impact on our lives and certainly not on anyone else. September 2020 Newsletter - Pg. 1 of 8
“No Justice! No Peace!” The urgency of the inferred conflict and immorality in that statement is impactful. When we white folks at Parkview covenanted with God, ourselves, our community and the UCC to be a Just Peace church were we making promises in the sense of it’s only peace because we aren’t the ones on the devastated side of justice? I am curious about what our ministry, our missions and our congregation would be like if we felt that working for justice is the urgent compelling drive of our lifetimes? The book White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity uses rigorous quantitative evidence that nationwide across the spectrum of white Evangelical, Mainline Protestant and Catholic Christianity “higher levels of racism are associated with higher probabilities of identifying as a white Christian; and conversely, adding Christianity to the average white person’s identity moves him or her toward more, not less, affinity for white supremacy.” Can we white Christians at Parkview live into our Just Peace covenant as the inheritors of a white American Christianity whose spiritual DNA distorts the Good News of Jesus in such a way as to unquestioningly accept our whiteness as God’s norm? I am curious as to what we realize we need to do now in this time of unprecedented public awareness of just how unjust our society has been and continues to be. I am asking each one of us to pray about our Parkview ministry and mission as it relates to the promises that this community made to itself, to each other, to the wider Aurora Community and to God regarding Just Peace. I am looking forward to the ways that we will respond and share the leadings of Spirit as we live into the future. Your Mission Team - Chris Brown (chrismbrown72@comcast.net), Connie Crowder, and Jan Hepp (jkhepp@q.com) Our Mission for September is “Neighbors In Need” This offering supports the UCC’s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and direct service projects. Through ucc.org/justice, our national Justice and Witness Ministries office offers resources, news updates, and action alerts on a broad spectrum of justice issues. Working with members of the UCC Justice and Peace Action Network (a network of thousands of UCC justice and peace advocates), Justice and Witness continues its strong policy advocacy work on issues such as the federal budget, voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties, and environmental justice. Neighbors in Need also supports our American Indian neighbors in the UCC. One-third of the offering supports the UCC’s Council for American Indian Ministries (CAIM). Historically, forebears of the UCC established September 2020 Newsletter - Pg. 2 of 8
churches and worked with Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Mandan, Hidatsa, Arickara, and Hocak in North and South Dakota, Wisconsin, and northern Nebraska. Today there are 20 UCC congregations on reservations and one urban, multi-tribal UCC congregation in Minneapolis, Minnesota. These churches and their pastors are supported by CAIM. CAIM is also an invaluable resource for more than 1,000 individuals from dozens of other tribes and nations who are members of other UCC congregations in the U.S. Please give generously to help these vitally important organizations. – Jan Hepp Community Garden Update Last year Denver Urban Gardens began assessing a $25 membership fee per plot to their area Community Gardens to help cover the cost of setting up new gardens and supporting all gardens in the Denver Metro area. Last year we used garden funds to pay the fee, and this year most of our gardeners have been able to pay it along with their plot fee which varies by plot size. In August the Parkview congregation passed the Community Garden's first ever request for a line item in the budget to help cover the cost of paying for plots and membership fees for the few gardeners who are unable to pay. It will also help cover the cost of projects we take on to improve the garden area. The Community Garden's Steering Committee thanks you for that. Because the Community Garden is a January through October functioning entity, we will report its activities and financial summary in the Annual Ministries Report in January 2021. Winter was not kind to several fruit trees in the Orchard CoOp and they will need to be replaced when the weather cools down. If anyone is interested in funding toward a fruit tree, Thank You, and I'll pass your kind gesture to the gardeners who take care of the Orchard. Just write the check to Parkview with Orchard in the memo line. The average fruit tree can run upwards of $200 to be a decent size, but any amount would help. You can see why we are sad to lose so many to last year's drastic temperature drop in October. If you happen to be in the church's neighborhood, check out the garden plots and Orchard. Stop by the Little Free Library's offerings, pick out a book, sit on the bench in the shade, and relax. Jessie Tramutolo - Community Garden Steering Committee Parkview Book Group The Parkview Book Group will meet on Zoom Sat. September 12th at 1:30. We will discuss Barbara Kingsolver's Unsheltered. October's book is The Hotel On The Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford. Contact Jan Hepp for more information. Bell Choir is Back! We will be bringing back is our Bell Choir! We will be very strict with the safety protocols that the church and health experts have put together. We are planning our first rehearsal on Wednesday, September 2 at 6:00pm. We will be rehearsing each Wednesday and plan to play for our worship services beginning in October. We are thrilled to have our members returning to prepare musical selections to enhance our worship experience. There is a spot or two still available and if you would like to be a part of our group, please call me at 303-594- 0563. Please continue to be safe and healthy! - Kathy Shepherding Our Congregation – Caring Circles We are reaching out to our congregation to see if you would be willing to help us “Shepherd our congregation at Parkview UCC.” It can be a personal call, a text email. A Note from the Financial Secretaries We have been on Zoom for church each Sunday since March 15 - seven months with more to come. It is business as usual otherwise. Many of you have continued to pay your pledge by automatic deduction from a checking or credit card account. Others send a check to the church and have even requested a supply of envelopes pre- addressed. We've stopped "passing the offering plate" during Zoom, but other virtual churches I've visited make time in the service to remind people that sharing our treasure is important to the stewardship of our church and the success of our mission efforts. The last page of Thrust & Parry is a tear-out- and-keep sheet for how you can also use the Give+ and Text options but we do not mention that during church. If you take the time to set one of those ways in your smartphone, you will have it available. Some folks do not like to have "church" talk about "money" but for those who don't contribute automatically, a reminder might be a good thing and certainly a visitor would appreciate finding a way to show support. Come to think of it, we do not even put our address on Zoom for visitors, do we? Speaking of Stewardship, I would like to give a shout-out to Mark Wideman and his group of kids who collected coins to give to Stewardship over the last few months. They collected $100 in coins and turned them in "to help the church in any way they could." The teller at Citywide Bank was thrilled to have all that coin back in circulation! Your Financial Secretary had the challenge of writing, or should I say printing, "thank you" notes to those kiddos because she was not sure reading cursive was on their skills list. A big thank you to Bea Patterson, Kira Richards, John Hoffhines, Sebastian Eby, Orion Eby, Annabelle Eby. Thank you for your continued support. Please stay safe and help protect others. The Bad: The position of Assistant Moderator remains unfilled. Please call or email me to learn what an Assistant Moderator would be doing these days. Pastor Jill and I are looking at how to structure the job differently as it is an enormous undertaking. The Ugly: I need you all, reading this right now, to think about how you might be able to serve Parkview. Current openings for 2021: • 2021 Assistant Moderator: YOU? • 2021 Moderator: MAYBE YOU? • 2021 Financial Secretary: HOW ABOUT YOU? • 2021 Assistant Financial Secretary: COULD THIS BE YOU? The leadership of our church depends on, you guessed it: YOU. We all get to partner together to help keep our church running. If you think YOU might be able to help out, please reach out to me, Michelle Eby, at 720-281- 9015 or Michelle.L.Eby@Gmail.com for more information. I am happy to answer questions and will not pressure you into anything you do not wish to do. Tips for Using Zoom As our time in quarantine continues, I find I am spending more and more time on Zoom. It is my connection to the people and organizations that I enjoy. I started out not knowing anything about the program, but with experiencing only one or two meetings, I realized how easy it is to use Zoom and have learned a few tips and tricks to make the experience more enjoyable (shared below). Some of these you may know and others you may not. Whether you are on a computer, smartphone or tablet, these options might be located in different parts of the screen, but you should experiment when you first enter a meeting (and before everything official starts) to see where they are located. Speaker View: When I am in a meeting or worship with a single presenter, I change my screen to “Speaker View.” This helps me see the presenter full screen instead of in a little box. HOW: Tablets - View options are represented by a grid or a box in the upper left corner. Just click on the icon and the view will toggle to the other view. Laptops or Computers – the box is in the upper right-hand corner. Smartphones - You will probably be in “Speaker View” when you log in. Swipe left on the speaker’s photo, to go into “Gallery View.” Swipe right to go back to “Speaker View.” Chat Option: Many speakers ask that questions be made through the “Chat” option. HOW: Laptops or Computers – Move your cursor to the bottom of the screen. The chat button will show in the ribbon at the bottom. Smartphones or Tablets - Tap on the screen to bring up the controls, click on “…”, or “participants” (depending on your device) and then click on “Chat.” You can then type in your message and hit send. Unmuting: If you want to make an announcement or a comment on most occasions you will need to unmute. Laptops or Computers - You can press the spacebar to temporarily unmute yourself and ask your question. When you release the spacebar, you are automatically re-muted. Otherwise, click on the microphone icon. Smartphone or Tablets - You need to touch the screen and click on the microphone icon in the control panel. Telephone - If you are calling in without a computer or smartphone, you can mute or unmute by dialing *6. If you want to ask a question or vote, *9 raises your hand. Each month I will share more tips and tricks with you. I look forward to seeing you at our next Zoom worship or meeting! – Jan Hepp Report from Parkview’s Transition Team Dear Parkview Friends, These days, we are fraught with transition. Transition in our church, transition in our country and even our entire planet. It is, I believe, a metanoia, the Greek word used in the New Testament that means to changes one’s direction in fundamental ways, to repent, to stop heading one direction and turn toward a new path. September 2020 Newsletter - Pg. 5 of 8
I believe Spirit is asking us to dance. Spirit is requiring us to reconsider what we value and to loosen our grasp on many ways and traditions that have provided us a healthy framework in the not-too-distant past. Spirit is asking us to dance into this new way. The Transition Team, led by Pastor Jill, is now in the process of completing a 50-page Local Church Profile, a version of which will eventually be used to attract a new settled pastor to Parkview Church. It is a big document that will detail just about every aspect of the Parkview community. The good news is that much of work has already been done by Parkview folks who participated in Joanne Buchanan Brown’s discernment workshops last year. We are taking that information and feedback straight to the profile. In the coming weeks and months, we on the Transition Team will be reaching out to you for any additional information we need. With this profile, we will be prepared to search for a settled pastor—an exciting, long-awaited step for this community which has already put in so much work toward it. I see these days as nothing short of a test of our faith, a test of our very character as a Christian community. Will we wring our hands and make desperate decisions from a place of fear? I hope not, and I can tell you that is not the attitude the Transition Team is taking. Yes, we all have our fears and anxieties and struggles, but working together (even on Zoom) is delightful and life-giving. Parkview has grown out of a set of solid values that has helped it thrive all these years, and one of the most wonderful things about being on the Transition Team is that I get to hear that perspective, the rich history that has already seen plenty of change, already moved through what Spirit has asked from it. Even after just one meeting, I can see that this team is approaching our challenges with calm, wisdom, creativity and the joyful hope of Christians who prepare for a new day. Many blessings, Amanda Parkview’s Covenant of Inclusiveness Beloved, let us love one another, because love is from God; everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 1st John 4:7 We proclaim the love of Jesus Christ as our rule and guide, we recognize that each individual is in some way a minority and has felt some degree of bigotry and prejudice, isolation and loneliness, and we seek to be active in the world, as people of faith, to bring about justice for all people. We, the members of Parkview Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, are an inclusive and affirming congregation and welcome all persons unconditionally as full members of our fellowship. The members of Parkview Congregational Church do not wish to discriminate against any person, whatever his or her status in life (race, ethnic identity, age, gender, sexual orientation, economic circumstances, physical and mental ability or impairment, theological perspective) might be. Together we will struggle with the issues of life. We will listen to each other, learn from each other, and provide trust, understanding, support and the love each of us needs to sustain us, as we journey together through life. Whoever you are, from wherever you come, you are welcome in this church. Historical Note: “Parkview’s Covenant of Inclusiveness was approved at the Annual Meeting on September 20, 1992. At that time there was a controversial amendment regarding sexual orientation to be placed on the Colorado ballot in November. But what I did not know until I researched it-Parkview’s work to be an inclusive congregation began two years prior to that embattled political environment. In 1990 the Inclusiveness Committee began as a group to “study the issue of homosexuality” and to educate and make recommendations to the congregation. I am sure this was an active and anxious time in the life of the church. It is interesting to note that the group “...came to understand that the question before [them] was less one of who someone else is, and more of who we are, as a congregation; and what our attitude is toward those whom we perceive as different in any way.” (Sep 1992 Thrust & Parry) This is a great example of Parkview church from its’ roots in the UCC to present day: the willingness to do self- examination. After the committee created a covenant statement it was disseminated to various groups within the church “for discussion and feedback”. They revised the statement and presented it for a vote to the congregation in September 1992. Personally, I would like to thank the Inclusiveness Committee for their work on this covenant and those of you who contributed to the conversation of inclusion.” (Reprint from Inclusivity Ministry article in Thrust and Parry Sep 2010). Inclusivity Ministry- “The larger purpose of the Inclusivity Ministry seeks to fulfill Parkview’s Covenant of Inclusiveness and Parkview’s Progressive Church Covenant. The ministry’s goal is to welcome, transform, and empower people- so that they will feel worthy of God’s grace and love and in turn go out into the world with a renewed faith and be of service to God’s family.” “Since its inception, the Inclusivity Ministry Team has been a small group of people that mostly represents and or supports the LGBT community. Therefore, we have participated in many LGBT activities such as: Day of Silence, Transgender, National Coming Out and World AIDS Observances. We have also joined with other Denver Metro area open and affirming UCC’s in sponsoring an information booth at Denver Pride Fest. Finally, thanks to the Library Ministry and personal donations, several LGBT themed books and DVDs have been added to the Parkview Library.” (Reprinted from 2013 Inclusivity Rally day info sheet) Parkview Library DVD’s: Call Me Malcolm: One Man’s struggle with faith, love issue, or who is engaged in our national dialogue about and gender identity—“Through Malcolm’s own story faith, homosexuality and same-sex marriage.” and through stories of those we met along the way, Malcolm offers us a glimpse into the real lives of real for the BIBLE tells me so—“Through the experiences of people who are transgender.” five very normal, Christian American families…discover how people of faith handle the realization of having a Chely Wright Wish me Away—“…the story [about] the gay child or family member.” first Nashville music star to come out as gay.” Out Late—“… an inspirational and moving documentary Fish Out of Water—“…essential viewing for anyone about five individuals who made the courageous and seeking a deeper understanding of this contentious life-altering decision to come out as lesbian, gay, or transgender, after the age of 55.” For a more complete history there are articles available in the Thrust and Parry (2008-2018) located in the church library. In May 2018 due to the declining health of my wife, Bobbie, I resigned as Core team leader of the Inclusivity Ministry. This was not an easy decision but was necessary to make the most of our remaining time together. Little did I know that we would only be given 10 more months. Presently there is no Core team leader of this ministry; I think there is great value in having this ministry continue and wonder if you do as well. Please contact the church office or Michelle Eby (Nominations) if you are interested in being the Core team leader of this ministry.
