JULY 2020 THE WAY VOLUME 46 - NUMBER 7 E AST FAIRFIELD PUBLISHED MONTHLY UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Working, playing, and praying together on our faith journey to share Jesus Christ with everyone. From the Pastor 2 Timothy 1:3-4 3 I thank God, whom I serve, as my ancestors did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers. 4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy. What is God calling us to as we re-start worship? This is a question that we have been struggling with for some time. We miss each other. We miss sitting in the midst of our family, singing, praying, hearing the Word of God. But things are not what they were. When we officially re-start on July 3 & 5 we will be tempted to rush back to the familiar. “Finally” we may say, “we can get back to normal!” This is natural given the stress we’ve all been under, wondering if we or a loved one might be the next one hospitalized with the coronavirus. Also, with the re-opening of businesses and restaurants we wonder why we can sit in a restaurant but not church. To help sort through the re-start and how we will be in the church I created a Task Force. The Task Force is making the decisions about when and how we re-start, not just worship but other things like committee meetings, youth, UMW, Scouts, and other events as they arise. The Task Force is made up of 13 church folks who represent specific committees or concerns they bring such as most vulnerable and parents with children of different ages. The Task Force has been at work since the end of May to prepare a safe re-start for our congregation. No decisions were taken lightly. Every aspect of the re-start was discussed and refined until the Task Force had what they felt is the best process for our church. We took the results of the survey from last month’s newsletter and saw that our church is broken into 3 primary groups: those who wish an immediate re-start, those who want to wait, but soon, and those who will not return until there is a vaccine. With that knowledge we knew it was time to plan and folks can begin returning as they feel comfortable. We also used the CDC recommendations, our state Health Department recommendations, and the recommendations from our Bishop and her Cabinet. We began with a soft-re-start June 19. It wasn’t widely advertised for two reasons, there was no real way to get the news out to everyone without doing a special mailing but also we really wanted to have smaller groups. The purpose was to see how things went and improve what may need improved. The official restart is Sunday July 5 at 9:30 a.m. We will also have worship Friday evening July 3 at 7:00 p.m. for the more vulnerable members of the congregation. After the re-start we will be recording the Friday evening worship and it will be on Facebook and YouTube. (continued on Page 2) Page 1 THE WAY — July 2020
(... Pastor’s Page continued ) As we re-start here is what you need to know: Please enter using the door on the east side of the Sanctuary. Doors will be propped open to reduce repeated touch. There will be someone there to welcome you. There is an offering box next to the door as you enter. Please leave your offering there. We will not be passing offering plates, again to reduce repeated touch. Also at the door is hand sanitizer and masks if you forget yours. We ask everyone to wear a mask. The Task Force understands that you may not want to wear a mask. Studies show that the mask along with social distancing is the best way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It is important that we protect each other, especially as we are seeing up-ticks around the country. Please maintain social distancing. Some of the sanctuary pews are roped off. Please do not remove the ribbons. Sit with 6’ between members outside your immediate family. There will be no singing. (Friday nights we have a group who will sing hymns and special music. They will be recorded for Facebook, YouTube, and/or Sunday worship) There will be no bulletins. However, as you exit, a designated person will hand out a sheet of announcements and prayer concerns to take home with you. If you want to socialize you are welcome to come early or stay after in the parking lot, but please be safe and maintain social distancing. There was a recent study of 64 “events” we enjoy participating in. Each were rated from 1-10 one was the least and 10 was the most dangerous to attend. The most dangerous was going to a bar. Following were sporting events, concerts down to the number 6th most dangerous which was attending worship services BUT, if you add singing to the service it makes it more dangerous than going to a bar. The reason is that when we sing, we use more of our lung capacity coupled with the fact that we project more, causing the Micro droplets, which may contain the virus, to be expelled further and at a greater number, even around a mask. Those droplets then hang in the air and can infect the whole congregation. Let’s admit it. NOTHING about COVID-19 has been easy. It has been a struggle from day one when if something was planned…the next day it had to be cancelled. I understand some of you wonder why we stopped worship in the sanctuary when other churches didn’t or why we couldn’t have a drive-in service when others did. I heard your concerns. I heard your frustration and your fears. Trust me, I understand the frustration some of you have felt. No decisions were made without much prayer and conversation and sometimes tears. I also appreciate the phone calls and notes of encouragement and support I have received. There were days that I was ready to just stop and give up … but then that would be a day a note or phone call would happen. God used many of you to keep me going. Thank you. As we return, the frustrations and fears will not end. They may even get worse because NOTHING IS THE SAME and NOTHING WILL BE NORMAL. I believe our Task Force prayerfully, and with each of you in mind, has made decisions that will keep us all safe. I do offer, if you have suggestions, please email me. I will then take those suggestions to the Task Force. That is how we have been operating and will continue. I have created a new email account just for your suggestions: revquill@gmail.com. I also believe we all love one another enough that we can respect those who are not returning immediately or who may not return until there is a vaccine. Please keep one another lifted in prayer as we continue to journey though these difficult times. Remember to reach out to each other. I know many of you are not ready for a visitor…but I am still and will continue to be available for drive-by visits. The ones I’ve had so far have been a great time of visiting and just being together again. God bless each of you and I hope to see you, talk to you, and visit with you soon. Rev. Church Directory Update ~ August 12 Our photo session for our church directory is back on. Lifetouch will be here to update our directory on Wednesday, August 12 from 2:00-9 PM When we had the directory done two years ago we had the option to get the smaller size directory which included the possibility of updating. Maybe you didn’t like your photo, maybe you were in Florida, maybe you’ve added or lost a family member. If you are already in the directory and you don’t want to change anything, then all is good—your current photo will automatically be included in the new directory. Many of you signed up before the Pandemic. We hope you will sign up again. Call the church office today to make your appointment. (330-457-2465) We have spoken to Lifetouch and they are taking every precaution to keep folks safe! Page 4
