VOLUME 69 JANUARY 19, 2011 No. 2 Baptist Temple Begins 2011 at a Full Run Jorge Zayasbazan If January is any indication, 2011 is going to be a very exciting year. Several new ministries have begun that will build upon and strengthen existing pro- grams. First is the After School Club (ASC). Most of the nearly 40 children enrolled come from our charter school, Highland Park Gifted and Talented Academy (HPGTA), but a few have been attracted by the programming which includes story and crafts on Mon- day, karate on Tuesdays, geography and Spanish clubs on Wednesday, Bible club on Thursday, and movies on Fri- day. Essential to the ministry are three paid children's ministry associates and church volunteers who provide pro- gramming that is fun and enriching in a safe and loving environment. Paula Quintanilla leads the story and craft time and the geography and Bible clubs. Lin Leeth leads the Spanish club. I lead the karate kids. Church staff maintains daily oversight of the ministry. Modest fees make this high-quality ministry self-sustaining. Thank you all for all your hard work! It was great to have Mike Ortiz and some from his martial arts group with us again. It was also wonderful to have several from Highland Park Gifted & Talented Academy. Joining us for the first time were several stu- dents from the school, along with the principal, Miss Rico, and three teach- ers Ms. Arnsworth, Mrs. Sanchez and Mr. Ramos. Baptist Temple is pleased to offer the following Martial Arts Programs Karate Kids - Age 4-6 - Tuesdays from 4:00-4:30 PM Karate Kids focuses on improving preschool age children's basic motor and listening skills. These skills will help them enter society with a more confident and enthusiastic outlook. They will become better students at school, better listeners at home and more ambitious towards the future. We believe that the time between the ages of 4 and 6 are the most important years of a child's development. Our program will enhance positive development in a fun and motivating way. Karate Kids will also prepare your child for our Paladin Martial Arts Program. Costs are $15 for the uniform and $12 per month. Paladin Martial Arts – Age 7 – Adult Tuesdays & Thursdays from 5-6 PM Paladin Martial Arts is a Christ-centered program that teaches effective methods, dis- carding techniques that do not work in real-life settings. We teach practical self-defense, “bully-proofing”, as well as self-control and non-violent conflict resolution. While the ability to defend yourself is important, there are many additional benefits to a martial arts program including goal-setting, humility, tenacity, responsibility, respect and honor. These character-building traits can lead to success in all areas of life. Costs are $30 for the uniform and $10 per month. Adult Self Defense – Sundays in January from 3-5 PM Adult self defense will focus on protecting your self and striking at sensitive parts of an attackers body. You will learn how to defend yourself unarmed and with improvised weapons. There is no uniform, gym clothes will do. Classes begin January 2nd. This class is FREE. All classes are held in the Baptist Temple Gym (Building 4, 3rd floor) enter through the East door. Call 210-533-7114 to register for a class.
