2 GARP now January 2020 REV. BRANDON BARRET T Message PASTORAL Cares & US FOR OTHERS INTO THE NEW YEAR Lessons & Carols Concerns Turn the page and it is 2020. A new year–and even a new decade. For some of us, it’s time for another round of New Remember these Year’s resolutions. Maybe more exercise and a healthier diet. Training for a marathon, cutting down on the ice cream, and getting your body to fight against the natural law that “all things tend toward disorder.” Or maybe it is more reading and members in your less tv. Or a determination to read through the Bible this year and actually make it to Revelation. prayers. Whatever the resolution, behind it lies a hope–the hope that this year can be better, that we can gain some traction and “do life” better, that we can get up again and keep trying. Most years I am pretty doubtful about the power of new year’s Billie Brady resolutions, but this year I’m repenting of my cynicism. Of course resolutions can go wrong, can assume that we are in fact Sara Cain “the captain of our soul” and all we need is some hard work and determination to make life work for us. Dorothy Clark Cynthia Cooke There is, though, another side to this. Maybe making New Year’s resolutions can actually be a distinctively Christian Sylvia Crosby exercise. After all, they declare that we are not trapped by the past, that it is possible to change, and that there is value in Alice Eidson striving. Why would we think new things are possible? How can we dare dream that we can change? Because Jesus rose Dimmie Grier from the grave. Because in him we are “new creation.” Because we now belong to God. Because Christ is seated at the Linda Henderson right hand of the Father. Rhett Leonard So, perhaps we can embrace New Year’s resolutions with hope this year. But let’s go one step beyond ourselves as Lila Long individuals. Is it possible for us, together, to step into the new year as a church family? To dream and to plan and to resolve Sloan Milling for our life together as a church? Can we have New Year’s resolutions for our church–which is to say for us as a community Janet Mitchell of believers? Marie Robinson This past year we began some new steps together with Us for Others. We recognized our need to build and refurbish our facilities to better accommodate our needs as a church, but not only for ourselves–for those who aren’t yet a part of this church family. We decided to step forward with the intention that we would grow as a church that exists to bring God’s love to others. Us for Others. Now for this year, how do we live this out? How do we dream and resolve to keep moving towards others? What would those resolutions look like? Here are a few that come to my mind: • Opening up our church in welcome • Not just greeting and being friendly, but drawing people in • Serving in the church in new ways Financial Update • Thinking “us” and not just “me” looking around and asking “who is not here yet? Who do I know who doesn’t yet know Jesus and doesn’t yet know this church family?” • Taking advantage of the building disruptions to ask “Lord what else would you shake up in us? How else would you November 2019 Actual Budget Prior Year stretch us–in ministry together?” Total Receipts $990,040 $1,082,193 $953,878 What are some specifics? What would you suggest for our New Year’s resolutions? How can we together take concrete steps this year to become more the church God is calling us to be? Total Disbursements 951,228 1,080,444 1,080,444 Let me know! Send me an email with your ideas (brandon@greenvilearp.com) or if you’re reading the digital version of this, Totals $38,812 $1,749 $75,407 click here to quickly give us some feedback. Resolved: that in 2020 we as a church… Year-to-date contributions are ahead of the prior year by 3.8%. The current –Brandon year budget assumes a 4.4% increase in total contributions over the prior year. Therefore, offerings are slightly behind target year-to-date. Expenses in total are favorable to budget year-to-date. The primary drivers of “...let’s go one step beyond ourselves as individuals.” savings year-to-date are the vacant associate pastor position and youth pastor position that was vacant until August. Higher utility costs offset some of these savings. 1 GARP now January 2020
