The Trestleboard General Jimmy Doolittle was a member of Hollenbeck Lodge No. 319 in Los Angeles, California. In an inter- esting set of events, Doolittle was balloted on during a special meeting of Hollenbeck Lodge for which they received special dispensation. At the time of his election to receive the degrees of Freemasonry he was sta- tioned in Louisiana. Again with special dispensation from the Grand Lodge of California and the Grand Lodge of Louisiana, Doolittle was given all three degrees on August 16th, 1918 in Lake Charles Lodge No. 16. All of the special circumstances were to accommodate Doolittle's military service and deployments. Doolittle was also a 33° Scottish Rite mason and a Shriner A publication of Sun City Lodge # 72 F&AM “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as APRIL 2021

, From The East Greetings: In the dark as well as the light… I am very pleased to say that your lodge has been hard at work! I’d like to thank Bros. Ed and Marcus Hensley - they have updated our network/internet infrastructure to enable work from home options and provide better WIFI access in the building, among many other up- dates. This is critical in making the running of the lodge more efficient. Also, I’d like to thank Bro. Doug Peck for jumping in as our Sr. Dea- con, and Bro. Robert Saenz as our Sr. Steward. These Brothers have done tremendous work and their dedication to our lodge are greatly appreciated. Bro. Arizona – thank you for fixing the tile to our entrance, and Bros. Hal, Bob, Pat and Larry (and so many others) – thank you for your continued service! So many Brothers contribute with their time and talent, often “behind the scenes,”… it is truly humbling to see. All of which is done out of a love for our Craft: A salesman breaks down in a remote country lane, a farmer in the adjacent field comes over and they discover that they are "Brothers". The salesman is concerned as he has an important appointment in the local town: "Don't worry says the farmer you can use my car, I will call a friend and get the car repaired while you go to the appointment" Off goes the salesman and a couple of hours later he returns but unfortu- nately the car is awaiting a part which won’t arrive until the next morning. "It's not a problem," says the Farmer, "use my telephone and re- schedule your first appointment tomorrow, stay with us tonight and I'll see that the car is done first thing!" The farmers' wife prepares a wonderful meal and they share a glass of fine single malt during an excellent evening, the salesman sleeps soundly and when he awakes there is his car, repaired and ready to go. After a full English breakfast the salesman thanks them both for the hospitality. As he and the farmer walk to his car he turns and asks "my brother, thank you so much but I have to ask, did you help me because I am a Mason?" "No" was the reply, "I helped you because I am a Mason" Travel well my Brothers. We are doing well, Brothers - 6 EAs, 2 FCs and (3) pending degrees along with multiple affiliations. Blessed are we, for sure. Thank you for all you do and keep up the great work! Remember, just reach out if there is anything you need. Your Brothers are here to help any way we can; but we can’t if we don’t know about it. I look forward to the next time we meet. Fraternally, Matt Link Worshipful Master Sun City Lodge #72 303-590-4192 ; matthewalink@yahoo.com
, From The West Greetings Brethren, Wow, I can't believe another month has gone by already. That was fast. As we head into April, we have a bust month of degree work to do so that we can pass some Brothers as well as initiate some worthy gentleman. I am looking forward to these events. We are doing a very good job in making donations to the Art Of Love Charity and please keep them coming. Finan- cial and in kind contributions are both welcome. Your charity thus far on this has been very appreciated by the di- rectors and rest assured these items are being put to good use. We are working towards planning an event in our building in October. If anyone wants to volunteer their time please let me know and I will get you in touch with the Director. She is looking for both talented folks such as music, painting, drawing, etcetera as well as just people who want to assist with general work. With the worthy brothers being passed, it is time to think about third degree planning. We are in need of a couple of parts that have been historically filled by brothers who are not able to attend at this time. Specifically, I am look- ing for a 2nd and 3rd Fellowcraft, and a Senior Deacon. Please let me know if you are interested in these or in any other part as we are always happy to get our brethren involved. Thank you to each of you for all that you do in Masonry. Fraternally, Marcus Hensley SC 72 SW
, From The south Greetings to everyone in the Masonic family, Happy April, and I pray all is well for everyone as we head into the heart of Spring. Many of our Christian Brethren and their families will be celebrating Easter, while many of our Jewish Brethren and their families are already celebrating Passover. When thinking about the celebrated individuals who are at the heart of the story of Easter and Passover, I cannot help but reflect on the symbolism of the Plumb. Even though we know the Plumb to be a tool that proves uprightness, it is because we have celebrated and revered examples, both in the Holy Scriptures and in our degrees, that we understand the importance of these celebrated individuals by whom many of our lives have been shaped. Their uprightness before God and man is why we find ourselves travelling in their footsteps as rightly as we can. The Plumb inculcates that integrity of character we should all follow, for that moral uprightness is best exemplified in both Easter and Passover. Albeit in Speculative Freemasonry the Plumb is a symbol, as we celebrate these holidays this month, may it be a steady reminder to us all of those great ones whom best exemplified being a plumb line amidst their people, so God would pass by them nevermore. Only with true members of the craft working behind their revered examples, their plumb lines, may the house or temple they build stand forev- ermore. I appreciate the fact we are all craftsmen, and our symbols allow us to band together, and see the intelligence of morality and love that permeates all nature. There is a quote that resonates with me on this matter which I hope elucidates what this means to you in your life, regardless of which holiday you celebrate. "There is a mystical virtue in right angles. There is an unspoken morality in seeking the level and the plumb. A house will stand, a table will bear weight, the sides of a box will hold together only if the joints are square and the members upright. When the bub- ble is lined up between two marks etched in the glass tube of the level, you have aligned yourself with the forces that hold the universe together." ~ Scott Russell Sanders May the Almighty Architect bless the Brethren and their families during their celebrated holidays! To my Christian Brethren, I say Happy Easter! To my Jewish Brethren, I say Zissen Pesach (Happy Passover)! May you all have an enjoyable holiday with your friends and families, and I hope to see you all at the upcoming stated meeting! Sincerely and Fraternally, Matthew C. The Power of Leaning In: A Journey of Love By Dr Lori Wieters This fine book is now available on AMAZON. Many in Sun City Lodge and associated Masonic groups will appreciate the loving narrative of the journey that Lori and Steve Wieters experienced in the last years of Steve’s life. Many people knew Steve Wieters for his love and carrying. He was always willing to assist and support others. Few understood the trials and tribulations that he was ex- periencing with his health. This book will provide you an insight into the world of medical care and the need for individual vigilance in monitoring your health situation. (Comments by Dave Miller, Past Master, Sun City Lodge.)
, Sun City Masonic Investment Trust –Investing In the Future When the Sun City Masonic Center was first established, a number of masonic related people contributed their time and resources to de- veloping the building and property. Part of their efforts were to establish an investment trust to provide financial support for a place where Masonic related groups and activities could be conducted. Today, the Sun City Masonic Investment Trust is administered by 5 Trus- tees elected for individual rotating 5 year terms of office by members of Sun City Masonic Lodge. The Chairman of the Investment Trust Board is Hal Knowlton. Members of the Investment Trust must be members of Sun City Masonic Lodge. The legacy established 30-40 years ago has developed into a Masonic Center which is used by many groups and many of us enjoy today. With the expenses of today, the Sun City Masonic Center is not self-sustaining and depends on donations from the group using the Masonic Center and the proceeds from the Trust investments. The proceeds from the invested Trust principal are disbursed periodically and no longer provide a sufficient amount to cover the ever-increasing costs associated with the operation and maintenance of the building and grounds. The Investment Trust Board oversees the investments and provides, pursuant to the Trust Agreement, a quarterly amount that is distributed to assist with the opera- tion of the Sun City Masonic Center. The principal of the Investment Trust was established through donations and contributions by mem- bers of the Masonic groups using the Sun City Masonic Center. The Investment Trust continues to need donations and contributions to maintain and grow the Trust principal that will provide for the future operating ex- penses of our Masonic Center. Individuals, or the groups, desiring to assist in enhancing the legacy or those who founded the Sun City Masonic Center, are always welcome to make contributions and donations to the Investment Trust principal. Donations and con- tributions directed to growing the Investment Trust need to be specifically identified for the Investment Trust and directed for adding to the invested principal. Routine donations and contributions made to Sun City Lodge No 72 assist the Lodge with current expenses but are not used to grow the principal of the Investment Trust. Individuals and groups interested in exploring the opportunity to make a direct contribution to growing the Investment Trust principal should contact Hal Knowlton halknowlton@hotmail.com, (714) 343-4322.
