PAGE 2 VOLUME 52 Dear HeadWay Family, I hope you are keeping well during these strange and unsettling times. We A Message are all in this together and we will get through this together. Even though we had to close our doors at the office on Oak Bay Avenue from our during the Covid-19 Pandemic, Madelaine, Kayla and I continue to work remotely to be here for you, our values clients and donors. Executive We have been focusing on outreach and checking in with clients to make sure people feel supported. It's never been more important to pick up the phone and check in with a friend or neighbour as it is now. Thanks to those Director of you who have offered and are volunteering to contact clients and caregivers. MIRA LAURENCE Perhaps some of you have been keeping in touch with friends and fgamily Covid-19 Update through the use of technology. The HeadWay staff has been meeting using ZOOM on our computers, it's refreshing to see the ladies faces while we physically distance. We are looking at using technology to set up support group meetings in the near future. We are going to make it easy for those who wish to participate. Watch for more on that coming soon. I would like to share a feel good story with you. Covid-19 has caused the cancellation of many things in the world, including the 28th Annual HeadWay Charity Golf Classic which was scheduled for June 4, 2020 . As most of you know, that is our biggest fundraiser of the year and vital to our organization. For almost 3 decades our friends at Peninsula Co-op have been the Presenting Sponsor of the event with a generous amount of money, this year was no different. Rather than ask for the money to be returned due to the cancellation fo the tournament, Peninsula Co-op has insisted we keep the $15,000 as a donation for us to continue our work. AMAZING! A sincere thank you to Peninsula Co-op and their continued generosity. Lindsay Gaudette, Marketing and Community Relations Manager had this to say, "In these uncertain times, it's important that those who can support continue to do so. Peninsula Co-op is and always has been committed to giving back and now is no exception." We will be reaching out to other sponsors and golf tournament supporters to see if they want to follow Peninsula Co-op's lead and help us at this time. We will also be doing an online auction where donors will have an opportunity to win great prizes including the grand prize of a trip for 2 anywhere WestJet flies. More information will come in an e-blast in May. If you are able to support us financially at this time, we certainly appreciate it. No gift is too small. In the meantime, we will continue to work and keep our "virtual doors" and phone lines open to you all. Please reach out to one another, reach out to us and most of all - stay safe. See you soon, Mira
PAGE 3 VOLUME 52 The current public health precautions in place to reduce risks for Covid-19 have impacted everyone. People are meeting the challenge by staying home while reaching out. A Message Over the past weeks HeadWay staff have been working out of the office and we appreciate your patience as we work out the technical from our issues of connecting remotely. Somehow it is not quite the same as chatting over a cup of coffee and we miss you. Don’t be surprised if you hear from us over the coming weeks. Staff and volunteers are reaching out with Parkinson's support calls in the absence of support groups and in-person contacts. We are just checking in to see how you are. So far people have been coping well despite the challenges of social distancing. People are using videos to help Client and maintain their exercises, catching up with family on the phone or video chatting on Skype, Zoom and FaceTime. Some people are supporting other Family Care Manger people in their support group, or volunteering to touch base on the phone and at least one care partner is thoughtfully sewing masks. Finding ways to stay busy and connected while staying home can also be an effective way to help reduce the anxiety resulting from living in times of MADELAINE ROSS uncertainty. Finn and I would like to thank you for supporting yourselves and each other and let you know that we are just an email away. PAGE 7 VOLUME 52 Q&A From the Townhall Meeting held on March 2, 2020 Q #1 - I would like to see all three organizations merge (HeadWay, PWP, and PSBC. This would reduce confusion for donors trying to determine where to best donate funds. A- Regardless of how the organizations are structured, we want to have close relationships between the organizations so that clients ultimately benefit. This is very important, and we believe that all three organizations agree on this goal. Q #2 - Why did PWP choose not to be a part of these merger discussions (between PSBC and HeadWay)? A- To clarify, both PWP and PSBC presented proposals to HeadWay, and after much deliberation, the board felt that HeadWay's services are more closely aligned with PSBC. Working more closely with PWP is something we feel can be looked at further down the road. Q #3 - Won't there be a duplication of services between PWP and HeadWay? PWP is planning to expand their services to include information sessions, and support groups for example? A- We felt that the alignment of HeadWay's services with PSBC made sense, and given the financial stability of PSBC, would ensure the longevity of service delivery in the community. Q #4 - Will HeadWay still remain a physical presence in Victoria? A- We can indeed confirm that a physical location will be maintained, but it's too early to say where it will be located. We recognize that the current location is not ideal for accessibility reasons. Q #5 - Is there a comittment to continue with current services? A- Yes, current services will remain supported as-is, and the expectation is that services will expand in the future. After some time, the HeadWay brand will be retired to eliminate confusion between organizations, but it's too early to say when that will occur. Q #6 - Will PSBC retain a board member (or members) from Victoria? A- When recruiting board members, PSBC seeks skills and knowledge that will help to achieve the organization's strategic plan; it's not based on geographical location. Continued...
PAGE 8 VOLUME 52 Continued... Q #7 - Will there be a loss of HeadWay staff? A- The Executive Director role is considered interim; and the support staff role is to be determined. It is the intent of both organizations to be open and transparent in communication moving forward. Q #8 - Do you know the timeline for this potential merger? A- While it is too soon to say as PSBC is currently doing their due diligence, it is our intention to honour our existing community comittments, e.g. partnerships with businesses. Q #9 - Do we expect to improve services? A- Yes, PSBC's strategy is always to increase impact and reach, and as such, is always doing assessments. Are you making the most out of your grocery shopping? Most grocery stores are now dedicating the first two opening hours to senior and/or disabled people for a low stress shopping environment and to also ensure that the products you need will likely still be in stock. If you are able, please try to do your shopping within these times. It is a good idea to call your store of choice before heading out as hours, store closures and availability of items is changing every day.

Alf Todd's Ride Alf Todd is an expert on Parkinson's disease. His journey with Parkinson's began when he was diagnosed back in 2007. He will be the first one to say that living with Parkinson's isn't easy but a supportive wife, his children, staying positive, having goals and helping others keep him going. He also loves to cycle. In 2012 he cycles from Victoira to San Francisco, a , kilometer trip for Parkinson's. Over the past decade, Alf has completed a number of fundraising rides to Parkinson's research and HeadWay. This summer he expects to be on the road again with plans for a 1 day 200k ride from Victoria to Sproat Lake with a goal to double his 2019 fundraising ride. One of his other goals was ro design a cycle that doesn't require balance. He and his partner Jeff have done just that with the Parky Peddlar (pictured here) which is now available by order.
PAGE 10 VOLUME 52 Education and Support Groups The absence of educational sessions and support groups has been on our minds here at HeadWay and we hope to come up with a solution during these unprecedented times. Currently we are testing out a way to do virtual support groups. Stay tunes and watch out for the next e-blast with more information on that! Thank you! Thank you to the staff at Elements Casino for selecting HeadWay as your charity of choice in February. Your donation helps support services to people throughout their journey living with Parkinson's Disease. Staying Active Victoria and surrounding area residents are so fortunate to have many outdoor spaces to go for walks, see the sights and soak up the sun. Taking a break from being inside for a short walk is very beneficial for mood and exercise. Just be sure to practice safe and proper social distancing. PAGE 11 VOLUME 52 Parkinson's Awareness Month Coming Together for a Cause During the month of April, all around the world communities come together to bring awareness to Parkinson's Disease. How? You may ask... One of the biggest ways you can show support is to take to your social media using hashtags such as #parkinsons, #parkinsonsawareness, #worldparkinsonsday. Doing this adds internet traffic to these pages which results in people learning about Parkinson's Disease and even choosing to donate to organizations like HeadWay and research centres. Our friends at Country Grocer are offering Masterpiece boxes of chocolates and Island Grown bouquets with $2 from each benefiting HeadWay and our Parkinson's community for the entire month of April, 2020. We appreciate Country Grocer's continued support in helping us with our fundraising efforts. HeadWay strives to bring awareness throughout the year, not just the month and we will continue to do so. You are all on our minds and in our hearts. Did you know that we are Peninsula Co-op Members? Peninsula Co-op is proud to support local community projects and organizations.
