THE TAPESTRY PROGRAM – Spring 2021 Rutland City Public Schools / Greater Rutland County Supervisory Union West Rutland School West Rutland Tapestry has been busy this winter with activities both inside and out. All of the students have come in with great attitudes and spirits all school year long, making afternoons together fun and enjoyable. The students have been hard at work making art and STEM projects, with a few days here and there for “Minute to Win It” activities and challenges. One activity we completed was a “STEM - Domino Build Off Challenge”. Students worked together to build a domino structure at four separate tables within the room. When all of the structures were built, the teams combined all of the tables with match box car racing strips and ping pong balls. The end goal was to see if they could get the dominoes to all fall at once. There were several attempts at accomplishing this task, and by the end, the students had worked together to make all of the dominoes fall at once. The students had a blast with this project and really had some fantastic looking structures. This activity had students in all grade levels working together and having fun. Teamwork and inclusion of all students also are a few of the practices we teach at West Rutland Tapestry. This is an example of the exciting and innovative activities we provide in our Tapestry program. We are hoping to spend more time outdoors in the coming months and to continue working together, while having fun and memorable afternoons. We hope the students stay vibrant and cheery during the closing months of school. Summer will be here before we know it. Thank you all for your continued support of West Rutland Tapestry! Rutland Town School This winter has been full of fun and exciting adventures. With all the snow our recess time has been filled with making snowmen, sledding, fort building and other outdoor winter activities. The students have been super busy with a variety of indoor activities this winter too. Indoors everyone has their own supply box filled with markers, crayons, colored pencils, glue, scissors and playdough which are easily accessed for individual and group activities. Both groups have learned a lot about sewing this winter and have created items to bring home and to share with different organizations. Almost all students are able to hand sew, use a sewing machine (with assistance), to create items such as scarves, puppets, and blankets. Students have also participated in a variety of crafts and STEM projects as well as some science experiments. Now with spring around the corner, staff and students are looking forward to spending more time outside playing games and running around with their friends. Everyone is excited to build forts in the woods, play tag, kickball, baseball, or just swing. Students will continue to work on sewing projects, spring related crafts and activities, and STEM projects. We will explore various artists' work and try our own hand at some of their techniques. Who knows we might have the next Picasso in our program! We also will begin our VerMoney program. This activity based curriculum will give students an introduction to wants and needs, saving and spending, and other financial literacy skills. Our Summer Tapestry plans are already well on the way. This year our theme at Rutland Town Tapestry will be “Where the Wild Things Are!” This summer we will unleash your child’s love of all animals large and small! We will enjoy the outdoors while learning about the creatures we share our world with. We will play games, make projects, and go on theme related excursions! We are also looking forward to possible field trips and time at Northwood pool! The dates for our summer camp will be Monday, June, 28th through Friday, August, 13th. Enrollment forms will be sent home with students in grades K-6 in late March or early April. Sign up quickly to reserve your spot for the summer. There is still time to sign your children up for the Tapestry Afterschool Program. The program runs Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from school dismissal until 5:30 each day. If you are interested in sending your child to the Afterschool program or Summer Camp and would like more information please contact us. Lori McNeil, Site Coordinator - 779-7429. PAGE 2
PROCTOR ELEMENTARY Proctor Elementary School Tapestry has been busy this winter, both indoors and out. We were able to have our first field trip this year to the park green for some sledding. The kids had a great time and without a doubt I’m sure they slept great that night. Indoors, the kids have been working hard creating leprechaun traps out of different recycled materials being creative and imaginative. We will soon be learning about the change of seasons and starting a nature journal logging the different changes each week. Looking forward, summer enrollment will be starting soon so please make sure to fill out one of the questionnaires for your child’s summer needs. This summer we are excited that we will be running for seven weeks instead of six. Hopefully this will be a big help to families. Rachael Vandenburg, Site Coordinator – 802-775-4342 RUTLAND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL Spring is in the air and the RIS Tapestry is ready to explore all sorts of new and fun things. In the coming months we will be cooking and gardening! Vermont Energy Education Program, known as VEEP, will be coming to teach us about solar, electricity and/or magnetism. We will also be exploring more STEM projects throughout the spring. We will continue to get outside and enjoy the outdoors and the natural changes of the seasons. Our goal in the spring is to get students excited about the outdoors and all that it has to offer. Each month you will receive a calendar of activities that your child can participate in as well as dates tapestry will not be in session. You will also receive a newsletter to update you of all the exciting things happening at RIS Tapestry that month. If you need to speak with Tapestry staff during Tapestry hours, you can contact the Tapestry cell phone. Stephanie Bull, Site Coordinator – 779-7464 PAGE 3
NORTHEAST Given some cold temps this winter and an icy playground, we are looking forward to warmer weather and sunshine! Of course, this is Vermont, so that will mean mud, but warmer is warmer, so we’ll take it. We will finish our second round of tutoring this spring. Our wonderful tutors work with 3-5 students after school to provide some extra support in decoding skills and reading fluency. We will offer another round of tutoring after April break. We are planning in-person Summer Tapestry this year. Our staff will be working hard to make it a summer filled with fun, enriching activities to make connections and memories. Make sure to fill out the interest survey to let us know your plans for summer. Enrollment forms for summer will be out in April. Any questions, please call us. NORTHWEST Winter has been filled with craft projects, games, and other activities for everyone to enjoy. We had loads of fun sledding and building snowmen too. This spring, Tapestry will be working on some great theme-based activities. In March we will be looking into Outer Space. We have lots of great STEM activities planned. We will be building rockets, playing with galaxy slime, making lunar landers, and learning about all the planets in our solar system. Hopefully in April we will see more spring weather. Students will plant seeds in jars and we will monitor how they grow and change. There will also be activities about how a rainbow is created and participate in some Earth Day activities. The theme for May is still undecided. We would like the students to come together and gather ideas about what they would like to discover. From this, we will decide the theme for May. Additionally, we have had a successful Tutoring Program this year, and it will be finishing up later this spring. Many students have had the opportunity to have extra help with their Math and Literacy skills through this program. Tutoring will be available again during the Summer Tapestry Program. With summer plans beginning, we are looking forward to having a lot of fun and keeping busy. As always, there is time for friends, sun and fun. Summer enrollment forms will be available to all current Tapestry students very soon. Forms will also be available online. If you are interested in having your child attend the NW Tapestry program, you may contact us directly. Thank you. Debby Marchese, Site Coordinator - 779-7581 PAGE 5
