Session Objectives • Families will be able to articulate the purpose of the Seal of Biliteracy. • Families will hear testimonials and understand why it is beneficial for students to participate in the Seal of Biliteracy • Families will understand the requirements for the Seal of Biliteracy • Families will receive advice on how to register and prepare their child for the Seal of Biliteracy exam.

CT Seal of Biliteracy • HPS is proud to offer the Connecticut Seal of Biliteracy. • Recognizes students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. • Affixed on a student’s high school diploma and transcript, the Seal of Biliteracy recognizes critical 21st-century language and communication skills.

Celebrating Successes • In the Spring of 2020... • 103 Hartford Public Schools Seniors received the Seal. • Students from all 12 HPS high schools earned the Seal. • Twelve languages were represented • (Spanish, Swahili, Italian, Portuguese, Bosnian, Karen, French, Jamaican Patois, Arabic, Albanian, Polish and Vietnamese) • Sara Dias Cardoso of Classical earned the Seal in Spanish AND Portuguese recognizing her trilingual abilities. • Recently, HPS was featured in The Language Educator
Who Qualifies for the Seal of Biliteracy • All senior students at Hartford Public Schools students are eligible to receive the Seal of Biliteracy based on evidence of achieving the designated level of language proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. • Both in person AND remote learners are encouraged to participate.
Eligibility Criteria • Students must complete all English language arts requirements for graduation. • Students must demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English at a level comparable to Intermediate Mid on the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines as demonstrated through one of several methods.
Unique Requirements for Less Commonly Taught or Classical Languages • Due to unique characteristics of certain languages, special allowances may need to be made. • Students seeking the Seal of Biliteracy through languages not characterized by the use of listening, speaking, reading, or for which there is not a writing system, will demonstrate the expected level of proficiency on an assessment of the modalities that characterize communication in that language.
Equitable Access • All students should have the opportunity to demonstrate their biliteracy. • Accommodations should be provided to students per their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Section 504 Plan for all assessments.

When/Where? • Testing window opens in Late February and lasts until April vacation. • Check with the World Language teacher(s) at your school to find out your school's specific test date. • Testing will be conducted according to the selected learning preference (Ex: Online or In person)
