The Studios by the Sea 2019-20 Artist in Residence Program St. Andrews by-the-Sea, NB, Canada Presented by Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre and Windsor House of St. Andrews
Artist in Residence Program In partnership with Windsor House of St. Andrews, Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre is proud to present an Artist in Residence program open to local, national and international practicing artists from November 2019 through April 2020. The program includes exclusive exposure for the participating artists plus full accommodation and 2 provided meals per day. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. In Spring and Autumn. Application form and dates at sunburyshores.org/artistinresidence. Residency type: Juried Residency Formats: 2 weeks to 3 months. Artists choose time-frame with a minimum of 2 weeks and a max. of 3 months per artist. The cost to the artist is $600/week paid in advance to Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre Inc.

Windsor House of St. Andrews With great character, spacious and unique rooms, and wonderful friendly hosts, Windsor House of St. Andrews is a beautiful, meticulously renovated historic home in the heart of St. Andrews by-the- Sea conveniently located right across the street from Sunbury Shores. This former sea captain's home, circa 1798, is the only 18th Century inn in New Brunswick. Enjoy a luxury suite with private bath and peaceful sitting area. Please note that accommodations are located on the second floor accessed by stairs. Along with beautiful accommodations, Artists in Residence will receive breakfast and dinner provided by Windsor House as well as access to the kitchen to prepare own food, access to laundry, and free wi-fi. Pets are allowed.

With the highest tides in the world, St. Andrews and the Bay of Fundy offers unique and timeless inspiration for artists. With breathtaking seaside views and an opportunity to be immersed in a community built around a long-standing appreciation for arts and nature, there is interest around every corner. St. Andrews is uniquely situated as an arts and natural science hub, with many resources such as the Huntsman Marine Science Centre, Wild Salmon Nature Centre, Biological Station, and more. Kingsbrae Garden, Minister’s Island, and nearby nature preserves provide many opportunities to delve into natural adventures and research during your residency.
Cost to the artist includes: Sunbury Shores Arts & Nature Centre will provide to the artist: • Use of Sunbury Shores includes a key to the building for 24/7 access to communal studios, space rental, use of equipment (list of available equipment and materials provided to artist), access to photocopy/printer (up to $50 in ink), access to small locked storage space. • Sunbury Shores will promote the artist via social media and print, will take photos of the artist at work, and will list the artist with photos and artist biography as an Artist in Residence on the sunburyshores.org website. • List the artist as an alumni of the Artist in Residence program. • Sunbury Shores will compose an individual story of the residency in an e-newsletter, sent out to 950+ contacts. • Limited use of gallery space when available (January through March). • A group public exhibition of works created by the artists in residence, including print and digital media coverage on website and social media platforms with online catalogue. • Access to free wi-fi. • Access to projector and projector screen when available. Windsor House of St. Andrews will provide to the artist: • Accommodation: 1 historic bedroom with private bath and sitting area, including writing desk and outdoor deck if applicable. Pets are allowed. • The artist has access to the Windsor House kitchen to prepare their own food at no cost. • The artist has access to laundry and free wi-fi. • Breakfast and dinner provided by Windsor House.
The artist in residence will: • Work in-studio or at an agreed upon location for a minimum of 25 hours/week. • Mention Sunbury Shores and Windsor House in social media posts, press and other forms of promotion. • Upon selection, provide Sunbury Shores with a 100-word biography, headshot, and a minimum of 3 high-res images of sample works for promotional material (digital files). • Request preferred studio, materials and equipment for use at least one week prior to the residency. Additional materials or select equipment may come at an additional cost to the artist. • Propose a work (ready to hang or install) with sample image by the end of the residency to be for sale for the 2019 group exhibition of AIR works – exhibition form will be provided. *Note: Sunbury Shores takes a 35% commission on art sales. • Follow all studio protocols and rules as outlined by the Centre, and request training on any equipment they are unfamiliar with. • Document materials used and time spent in the studio on provided forms. • Be responsible for daily clean-up of their station to meet studio standards.
Our Studios Ceramics Located on the basement level, the pottery studio is a welcoming space for emerging and experienced potters to create work, instruct, experiment and connect. The studio is equipped with: • 4 pottery wheels • 2 electric kilns • Raku kiln c/o volunteer potter off site (when available) • Limited materials storage • Glaze inventory and glaze reference library (at extra cost to artist) • Wide range of chemicals and compounds (at extra cost to artist) • Extruder • Small clay press
Our Studios Metalsmith Our newly established metal studio is located on the basement level, adjacent to the pottery studio. It provides an assortment of tools and space with workbench space for up to eight people. The studio features small windows overlooking the lovely Zen Garden and the St. Andrews Harbour. The studio is equipped with: • Six full work stations • Equipped for silver, copper, bronze and gold • Polishing equipment • Dust collection system & fumehood • Secured and inventoried teaching kits • Safety equipment • Small kiln • Metal press • Torches
Our Studios Printmaking Our printshop is a bright, newly renovated facility on the second floor overlooking the St. Andrews Harbour. Sunbury Shores boasts the only environmentally-friendly, non-toxic printmaking studio in eastern Canada. Not only is this good for the environment, but it makes printmaking safe for kids, teens and adults! We also work with one of the only Master Printmakers east of Toronto, Robert Van de Peer. The studio is equipped with: • Lithograph Press with lithographic stones & 2 Intaglio Presses • Lino, Copper Plate, Acetate, Collagraph, Mezzotint, & Aquatint Press capability • Non-toxic print chemicals and materials (at extra cost to artist) • Dedicated, internationally recognized chop for all prints printed in the Sunbury printmaking studio • Range of papers and substrates (at extra cost to artist) • Inks and non-toxic etching solvents • Range of rollers
Our Studios Multi-Purpose Studio The multi-purpose studio is a large, brightly lit second floor studio appropriate for painting, life drawing, digital photography, stained glass, print, fibre, digital media, and other projects. It is a flexible and highly functional space overlooking Water Street. The studio is equipped with: • Tables and space • Acrylic, oil, gouache, and watercolour paint library (at extra cost to artist) • Easels and donkeys • Large-format paper cutter • Grinders • A variety of materials can be ordered
