First Year: Key Milestones Designed To Help You Progress Your Project • Complete the Registration process • Prepare for, arrange, and conduct Regular Meetings with your Supervisor/Supervisory Team • Conduct a Review of your progress after 3-Months of registration: • Preparation of a ‘project plan’ to be submitted to your DDPR • Completion and submission of the Development Needs Analysis Form (DNA) • Annual Progress Monitoring to confirm (or not) registration for the PhD (June−July 2021)
Annual Progress Monitoring • The completion of the APR form (via Liverpool Life) • A review of your work by an Independent Progress Assessment Panel (IPAP) • This panel is comprised of two members of academic staff who are not in your supervisory team. • IPAPs are organised by your Departmental Director of Postgraduate Research • As part of the IPAP PGRs generally: • Give a 20-minute presentation on an aspect of their work • And submit an extended piece of writing for review by the IPAP
PGR Supervisory Meetings • All full-time PGRs must conduct and record a minimum of 12 formal meetings with their supervisor each year. • These should be recorded via the PGR Toolbox and signed off by your supervisor throughout the year (on average 1 per/month) • NOTE: PGRs are expected to meet with supervisors while working remotely – The University currently supports this via MS Teams and Zoom
PGR Supervisory Meetings • Before each formal meeting, PGRs need to set an agenda for the meeting, including targets for your future research and enter these into PGR Toolbox • These need to be sent to your supervisors prior to the meeting (and with enough time for them to review them and consider their viability) • At the formal meeting, you and your supervisor will review and discuss the agenda and targets, amend as necessary and each sign them off inside the VLE. • NOTE: Part-time students are required to record a minimum of 6-formal meetings (using the same format as fulltime students)

PGR Portfolio of Activity • Designed to help you evidence that you have addressed needs identified in your DNA • The Portfolio is itself Aligned with the Researcher Development Framework set out by the University to help you recognise areas of strength and areas needing further development • Forms part of the Annual Progress Assessment • Can be used to help create a CV
What Should Go Into Your Portfolio of Activity • The Portfolio should be used to Record your: • On and off Campus training • Your presentations in on-campus professional events such as workshop and seminars • Presentations at External workshops, seminars and conferences • The teaching activities you have undertaken – these can be at the University or elsewhere. • And the Portfolio can be used to record other activities and achievements you feel appropriate
Note On COVID-19 • Induction and LDC training provision will be provided remotely for at least the first semester. • The Faculty position is that All PGRs who can work from home should for the first semester (Updates to follow). • Your individual schools are making provision for PGRs who need to access labs, studios and practice spaces, and those who have indicated they are unable to work from home. • Queries about Return to Campus within your School should be addressed initially to your School Director of Postgraduate Research • For further information please follow Liverpool Doctoral College COVID-19 FAQ:

Development Needs Analysis • You will need to complete a Development Needs Analysis (DNA) within the first three months of your degree and the document should be reviewed and updated annually when you revise your development plan each year. • The DNA should be completed before your meeting with your supervisor where you agree the training and development schedule for the coming year. • Following the meeting, the completed DNA should be returned to your School. The completed DNA will be used in your annual Independent Progress Assessment Panel (IPAP).
Development Needs Analysis: Process Reflect on training needs on DNA Form Discuss at Annual Discuss with Review IPAP supervisor Identify sources of relevant training Record training in (with supervisor) PGR Toolbox Undertake training
The content of the DNA is based on the Vitae Researcher Development Framework designed by the UK Research Community.
Development Needs Analysis: Purpose Two key purposes: 1) For individual students to identify their personal training requirements and develop a bespoke training plan, with their supervisors, which will then also be discussed at the Annual Progress Review Independent Progress Assessment Panel. 2) To identify gaps in training provision. Departmental Directors of PGR read all the DNAs for PGRs within their Department, to analyse trends and identify gaps in provision. This data is discussed across the School and Faculty. Relevant training can then either be (a) more widely publicised, if already existing, or (b) newly developed to address the identified gaps.
Faculty PGR Training Catalogue As you identify your personal training need requirements, you can refer to the Faculty PGR Training Catalogue for training available: https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/humanities-and-social- sciences/postgraduate-research/pgrtrainingcatalogue/ The catalogue lists online and in-person training which is available in the five key areas of the Development Needs Analysis form: • Communication & Writing • Research Methods • Ethics & Governance • Impact • Employability & Entrepreneurship
