Session Descriptions Ethics VS Professionalism: What’s the Difference and How do They Tie Together? This session will assist each attendee in learning the difference between their own ethics and professionalism and how it can fit into their company’s code of ethics without jeopardizing their own standards. Ethics are guidelines for individuals, which clearly state the dos and don’ts and exist in many contexts. Whereas professionalism can be defined as the skills, competencies and the conduct displayed by an individual or a certain profession. Are you professional and ethical in your day-to-day work? Do you uphold your own standards and those of your company? Or do you only live for yourself and forget about who you step on or hurt on your way to your “so-called” top? 30 Days of Calendar Activities: During this session, Gloria will take you through 30 days worth of activities you can implement or adapt for your population. She will give you actual programming ideas and ways you can implement them. There will also be time for questions. How Activity Professionals Will Save the World of LTC: What people want in their life, their normal life, the one they’ve led their entire life before moving into an institution. Be challenged to move beyond the traditional, institutional ways of your discipline’s services to stimulate engagement with life on the person’s terms. Ponder how you can be better utilized as a coach and mentor to engage all staff with residents’ life preferences, routines and interests and how engagement with life can help prevent falls and what we call “behaviors”, eliminate the need for alarms, chemical restraints and more. We will think way outside the box to shake things up, putting the person in the forefront and the institution in the history books. Be inspired again like you were when you began your career and grab a hold of how your profession can change the world of long-term living! Ukelele 101: Even if you have never played an instrument before, after this session you will be able to! We will be covering all of the ukulele basics to get you started. We will review the instrument, go over basic chords, strumming and easy songs that you can implement with your residents. Each participant will go home with their own ukulele. (extra $55.00 for this session and extra CE credit) Overcome the Unexpected Through Exercise: This session will introduce attendees to named exercises such as JOY, EMBRACE, FULFILLED, FAITH, HOPE & LOVE! With the ease and power of learning just these six Overeasy exercises, you and your seniors can overcome the unexpected that life will definitely throw our way! Science for Seniors: During this session, you will learn the research behind how science will benefit those you serve and all attendees will learn hands-on, ready to use science programs. Gloria will demonstrate several experiments, let you know the materials required and discuss how you can implement these with your seniors. Gloria will also have some of her books for sale, which have topics already spelled out for you with everything you need to complete the projects. Why Music Works : We have all seen music work, but what you may not know is WHY music works. During this session, we are going to break down how music impacts and affects different parts of the brain and why it is so powerful. After discussing different parts of the brain, we will be testing out these music programs ourselves. You’ll leave this session knowing more about the brain and have some program ideas to take back to your communities. Keeping Love Alive as Memories Fade: The Five Languages of Dementia Care: In this presentation, we will examine how 5 love languages can be applied to the day-to-day lives of our residents who have dementia. We will discover how these love languages can help us better communicate with and meet the needs of these residents and their families. Going Places: Armchair Adventures and Activities: During this session, you will gain ideas to create travel programs that are more than just video and food. You will be given ideas of how to incorporate trivia, history and games into your program. You will be given sample programs to take back to your communities. Gloria will also have some of her books for sale.
Session Descriptions Person-Centered Care Planning: Are you still developing traditional, institutional, disciplinary care plans? If team members say, “I have to work on my care plans,” you are. Care plans belong to, and should reflect, the person. Be freed from the outdated, medical, now deficient, model of care planning. Content will be shared from Changing the Culture of Care Planning: A Person-Directed Approach co-authored by our speaker, a former surveyor, covering culture change practices progressing from personalized to “I” care plans to narrative care plans. Do you care plan according to CMS’ longstanding requirement to identify each residents highest practicable level of well-being? Supporting residents to set their own goals is not a new CMS requirement, but a very tried and true culture change practice along with the higher level of living plans and growth plans. Also now required is supporting each residents seven domains of wellbeing, are you supporting those? Take a Slow, Deep Breath: Coping with COVID 19 or Other Disruptions: In this presentation, we will discuss the emotional and economic impact of the current pandemic on individuals and families and how we as professionals can help ourselves and others cope during these and future difficult times. Sensory Science Activities for People with Dementia: During this session, learn how to use kinetic sand, rhythmic music, one bag recipes, color projects and more to engage the residents’ senses. The Eden Alternative Domains of Well-Being—Now Part of the CMS Requirements: In 2005, the Eden Alternative brought together culture change thinking leaders, to discuss well-being. Out of that was born the seven domains of well-being: growth, comfort, security, identity, autonomy, connectedness, meaning and joy. Did you know that CMS included them in the regulation F Tag 679? Are you learning how the residents you serve define these domains for themselves and are you including it in your care plan and services you provide? Now is the time, aren’t you glad and wouldn't you appreciate it if you lived in a nursing home or other LTC setting? Religion and Spirituality: What are you doing to meet your residents religious and spiritual needs? During this session, we will discuss what some of those needs may be and how we can meet them. We will talk about challenges we may run into and discuss what religion and what spirituality are. It is required in the federal regulations that we meet the residents’ spiritual needs and that involves more than just church services. Montessori for Those Living With Dementia: When you hear the word “Montessori”, what’s the first thought that comes to mind? It’s probably children. However, Montessori encapsulates so much more. This method focuses on the individual, their strengths and skills. This interactive session will include the foundations of Montessori as well as how to apply this type of program with individuals living with dementia. Public Speaking– Your Greatest Fear? Your Greatest Wish? Or Both? Ever notice that if you enter into the workforce in health care, no matter the setting, we’re educating someone about something? Whether residents, family, fellow teammates or even ourselves. And it could be about anything: medical issues, regulations, policies or better practices. Maybe you’ve even been asked to do some of the training, maybe this makes you tremble. Join us for some encouragement and a lot of chatting through what happens when we speak in public, overcoming fears and nervousness, what makes a good presentation and where you could do more of it. Round Tables/Share Sessions: These sessions will be divided up for skilled nursing, assisted living and independent living. Each will be led by Board members who are Certified Activity Professionals, Directors or Consultants and who have many years of experience in activities. They will guide the session with topics related to questions you all have. We also ask that everyone bring ideas to share. They can be games, trivia, crafts or any program that has worked for you. We would especially like to hear about the activities you put in place during COVID. A Pep Rally for the Future of Aging in South Carolina: We have much to celebrate in the culture change movement both nationally and in South Carolina. Although many tools for culture change are at hand, it is also easy to experience roadblocks and setbacks on this challenging journey, to be overwhelmed by the “YES, BUTS”. This session will be a sharing of encouragement and enthusiasm to overcome those setbacks through frank dialogue on how to move forward. Bring your “YES,BUT” questions, ideas, as well as your unquenchable spirit for change to this, your own pep rally for change.
SCAPA’s Got Talent When COVID kills the dancing, Activity Professionals bounce back using their talents! This year’s fun will be a talent show starring YOU as the contestants! Cash prizes will be awarded! There is a spot on your registration form to sign up and someone will contact you prior to conference. Pandemic Restrictions At this time, we have no way of knowing what restrictions may be in place at conference time, but we fully expect there still may be some restrictions. We will abide by whatever those are and we will err on the side of caution. Whatever restrictions are in place will not be up for discussion or debate and all attendees will be expected to follow all restrictions. Anyone who cannot follow them will be asked to leave and no refunds given in this instance. In order to seat everyone at least 6 ft. apart, we may not be able to have tables in the session rooms. We will be providing everyone with a clipboard if this is the case. We will know closer to conference if we can have tables. If masks are recommended, we will require that everyone wear a surgical mask (the only one approved by the CDC). If you do not have a surgical mask, we will provide one for you each day. The hotel will also be following all protocol. For buffet meals, they will actually serve you, but it is still all you can eat. Lunch boxes will be provided for Wednesday and Thursday lunches. Everyone will be asked to stay 6ft. apart in the exhibit hall as well. Any other recommended protocol will be in place to assure everyone stays healthy and safe! Roundtables/Share Sessions On Friday morning, there will be roundtables and share sessions set up for skilled nursing, Assisted Living and Independent living. These will be led by Board members who are certified. Please bring any questions you have and we will try to answer them. We also ask that EVERYONE bring an idea to share. It can be any idea and we would love for you to bring about 50 copies to share with your peers. These sessions only work well when you ALL participate!
