THE LEAGUE FORMAT IN SAILING • Up to the year 2013, sailing was a sport for individuals or individual teams with sailing clubs neither appearing in the media nor public focus • But with the start of the German “Segel-Bundesliga” in 2013 this situation has dramatically changed • Clubs became the centre of attention and the media coverage of sailing has massively increased since the inception of the league • Besides the increase in media coverage, we also record a higher identification of sailors with their clubs which eventually will lead to a fan-culture being known from other (team-) sports • Due to the great success of the “Segel-Bundesliga”, the Danish Sejlsportsligaen was established in 2014 based on the same concept used in Germany
THE CONCEPT OF THE LEAGUE FORMAT • Official national championship between the 18 best sailing clubs in each country • National champions are crowned after an event series with several regattas in different and attractive locations • Boats for the regattas are exactly identical, provided by the league organisers and used throughout the season • Regattas take place close to the shore for spectators to easily follow the events, short and quick races, simple rules, clear evaluation • Autonomous, professional broadcast on sight at every event • Due to the great interest in Germany, a second division with 18 clubs was established, leading to promotions and relegations between the two leagues
THE SUCCESS STORY DEVELOPS … After the successful inception of sailing leagues in Denmark and Germany, several other countries are on the verge to start their own national competitions:
... AND TURNS INTERNATIONAL • With national sailing leagues developing, it is inevitable to found an international sailing league at club level ! The SAILING Champions League • National champions from each country automatically qualify for the SAILING Champions League (SCL) • As long as national leagues do not exist, the respective countries receive wild-cards in order to send their most successful sailing club(s) • In 2014, the SAILING Champions League will be limited to one event in Copenhagen, in the inner harbour • From 2015 onwards, an event series with at least three stops in different European main cities will be established
