MODZI ARTS GALLERY Modzi Arts is a contemporary, conceptual art space that works with artists to develop and present new bodies of work in innovative ways. It was established in 2016 with the vision of providing a space for knowledge exchange, experimenting, engagement and dialogue within the visual arts sector in Zambia. The space has hosted exhibitions, residencies, artist presentations, talks and workshops. The aim of the Modzi Arts Gallery is to provide a platform to grow the Zambian multidisciplinary and contemporary art scene to both local and international audiences. The gallery has increased the visibility and accessibility of the arts within Zambia, while supporting the pro- fessionalization of Zambian artists and the development of new curatorial approaches. MODZI ARTS AT THE FAIR Modzi Arts group exhibition is a combination of several elements that are unique, but not limited to a Zambian environment bringing a new conversation around knowledge creation, our historical values and techniques. Through the exhibition Modzi Arts Gallery reflects on the internal construction of ideas around Zambian myths, taboos and personal narratives. The exhibition features the works of five incredible artists Aaron Samuel Mulenga, Agness Buya Yombwe, David ‘Daut’ Makala, Nomes Dee and Stary Mwaba. FEATURED ARTISTS STARY MWABA (b.1976, Chingola, Zambia) obtained his Master of Fine Art degree from Rhodes University. He has participated in numerous residencies, exhi- bitions and international workshops, which include, Olabisi Silva’s CCA, FCa Gha- na, Robert Wilson’s Watermill Residency New York, The Caribbean Contemporary Arts, Trinidad and Tobago and Braziers International workshop, London. His solo exhibitions include the Solace of a migrant (2009) at Gallery Momo, Free- Silikoses, 2019 dom in Transition (2008) at Lusaka National Museum, Crossing Over (2005) at the Mixed media on Caribbean Contemporary Arts, Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago. perforated newsprint AGNESS BUYA YOMBWE (b.1966, Mazabuka, Zambia) is a painter and mixed media artist and one of Zambia’s leading figures in the creative and visual arts industry. Her works are part of the Zambian National Art collection, the Na- tional Museum of Lusaka, The Thapong Collection in Botswana, The Tulipamwe Collection, Namibia and McColl Center for the Arts, North Carolina, USA. Buya Yombwe has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions including: Ni Mzilo | It is taboo (2019) solo exhibition at the Livingstone National Snake Taboo ii, 2019 Acrylic on canvas Gallery in Livingstone, Zambia; DIALOGUE (2016) at Kunstabanken in Hedmark, Norway; Botswana’s Foremost Female Artists (2005) at Frame Gallery, Gaborone, Botswana; Art for the Heart (1997) Africa Centre Gallery, London; Munch Atelier (1995) at Edvard Munch Studio Oslo, Norway.
AARON SAMUEL MULENGA (b. 1990, Lusaka, Zambia) is a mixed media artist currently pursuing his PhD at the University of California Santa Cruz, where he seeks to build upon the research he began in his Masters, exploring the concept of Transcendence through flight. Mulenga has participated in the Falconer Foundry Residency Kwa-Zulu Natal South Africa (2017). He has presented his work at numerous venues including the Absa Upelomwewo, 2017 L’Atelier Johannesburg (2017), Turbine Art Fair (2016) and That Art Fair Cape Bronze Town (2015). His exhibitions included Converge (2018) at the Raw Spot Gallery, Grahamstown, South Africa; Exhuming Histories (2018) at The National Gallery in Livingstone, Zambia; Salvage (2016) at ArtEC, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. DAVID ‘DAUT’ MAKALA (b.1983, Lusaka, Zambia) is based in Lusaka. He currently serves as the vice chairperson of the Visual Art Council of Zambia and is the founder of Studio225 in Chilenje Market, Lusaka which focuses on close artistic collaborations. In 2015 he was selected for the Asiko’ Art School Residency in Mozambique, orga- nized by Olabisi Silva CCA, in the same year, he attended the Insaka International Mafumu, 2019 Art Workshop Residency in Livingstone, Zambia. In 2017, he co-curated the Teeth Metal and Tounge with Julia Taonga Kaseka at Modzi Arts and held his first solo exhibi- tion called Rites of Passage at the 37d Gallery in Lusaka. NOMES DEE (Naomi Doras b.1993, Lusaka, Zambia) is a digital artist and il- lustrator based in Lusaka. In 2014 and 2015, Dee completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Interactive Digital Media from the University of Sydney, Australia. Her work is featured on africandigitalart and OkayAfrica. Dee’s exhibitions include Six Impossible Wishes A Human World Map (2017) at the Wisedog Gallery, Larissa, Greece; The Absa L’atalierJohannesburg (2017); Wom- Cooking Woman, 2016 ens Day Exhibition (2016) at the Henry Taiyali Gallery in Lusaka, Zambia and the Digital illustration Chinese Exhibition (2016)at the Lusaka National Museum.
