DISTRICT 6990 NEWS | JUNE 2021 MEMBERSHIP From: District Membership Chair Robert Slatoff Membership and What We Learned from Covid: First, clubs should anticipate losing at least 10% of their membership each year because of events having nothing to do with the club (i.e., people move, sickness, job change, death, etc.). If each club is not bringing in new members, it is shrinking and dying! Second, Rotary clubs lost members at a slower rate since Covid, so the Covid issue did not cause a loss of members. Third and very important, Rotary Clubs added members at a much slower rate since Covid. Forth, some Rotary Clubs, grew significantly since Covid. The critical question is what did these Rotary Clubs due that allowed growth? The answer includes they remembered they are not service clubs but are membership clubs that perform service, they delivered meaningful opportunities for their members to change the world in a manner that was meaningful for their members, they had fun, they had written membership plans, they had their club members’ buy in and engagement on the written membership plan, they continued to deliver meaningful meetings with engaging speakers using the virtual meeting platform to obtain speakers that could never have attended their live meetings, they discussed membership at their Rotary Club Meetings and again, they had fun. Important take away, Rotary Clubs must to focus on adding new members at all times, and especially now. Always keep in mind that Rotary is a membership organization and that clubs need to continue and always provide their members with very meaningful membership experiences, meaningful to their members. If Clubs do not understand their member needs or ignore these needs, do not expect those members to bring new members to Rotary or remain members of your club! 2
DISTRICT 6990 NEWS | JUNE 2021 COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLIC IMAGE From: Communications and Public Image Chair Barbara Gobbi As the 2020-2021 Rotary year comes to an end, so does my term as the District Communications Chair and District Public Image Chair. I have enjoyed working with all of the clubs over the past 6 years in this role. When I first took the position on the Public Image team, the sitting Governor's PI goal was for every club to have EITHER a Facebook page or a website. I created a spreadsheet to track all of the clubs and found that only about 25% of our clubs had some sort of public-facing communication. Today nearly every club has both...and then some! I was also a one-woman show for many years. This past year over 20 Rotarians in the district stepped up to help and we took our district and club communications to a new level. Thank you all for your help! As I turn over the keys to our NEW District Communications Chair, Henry Menendez, I want to remind the clubs why we have a District Public Image Committee and how it can help YOU achieve your goals: 1. The District PI team helps clubs to inform and educate non-Rotarians, while ensuring a consistent message, about the good work that Rotarians do. 2. We help to show the different reasons why people join Rotary; to make a difference in their communities and throughout the world, to leave a legacy, to build relationships, and more. By showing the members of your club as people of action, others will want to be a part of that. Keep telling those stories! 3. The District PI team also helps clubs achieve the Zone Public Image Citation. This is more than just a piece of paper. It's a roadmap that will help you achieve your club goals. When you do these steps each month, tremendous things will happen for your club! I'm so thrilled with how far our members and clubs have come and am looking forward to serving as your Governor in 2023-2024. If you would like to be a part of the District Public Image Committee, please contact Henry at enrique@hnoproductions.com. 3
DISTRICT 6990 NEWS | JUNE 2021 FOUNDATION From: District Foundation Chair Alan Cohn It’s June which means it’s the last month of the Rotary year and your district 6990 Rotary Foundation committee has been busy. First at the end of May we had the SHARE committee meeting. This is where we select next year’s grants to be included in this year’s spending plan which will be submitted to The Rotary Foundation after July 1. Please remember our committee doesn’t approve grants we only select those submitted. So I will let club presidents know if a club grant is in the spending plan and I’ll notify again when The Rotary Foundation approves the spending plan. Please DO NOT begin the grant until the later date. The rule is if you begin early then you’ll need to return the district grants monies. Grants are made possible by each Rotarian contributing to the annual fund. I know some clubs and Rotarians haven’t done that yet this Rotary year. Please make your annual fund contributions before June 30. It affects our grant giving 3 years from now. Also please remember district 6990 DDF by making a devise in your Will or Trust or life insurance or IRA. The interest off a contribution of $10,000 or more to the Rotary Endowment Fund also adds to future grant giving. Also check if you’ve made your goals for Polio Plus and if not please do so by June 30. Finally next year I’d like to have a Peace Scholar or if not then a Global Scholar from our district. Many clubs have great relationships with their local police departments. A police officer would be a great choice for a scholar to study peace and conflict resolution. If your club would like a speaker on this area please reach out to me or PDG Roy Gonas. As you can see we’re still very busy at year end. Doing Good In The World. Alan Cohn PDG and District 6990 Rotary Foundation Chair 4

DISTRICT 6990 NEWS | JUNE 2021 DGE MESSAGE From: Joe Schumacker The recently completed District Assembly was a milestone event for Rotary Alive. The primary purpose of the District Assembly is to provide Rotary Training for incoming club leaders. An important but under-appreciated segment of the Assembly is the business meeting. Items addressed in the business meeting have been submitted to the clubs for review a minimum of thirty days prior to the Assembly. The District Manual of Procedure (MoP) requires the approval of the annual District Budget, including the amount of District dues to be paid by each member. Changes to the MoP are also presented for approval at the business meeting. Additionally, District leadership has the opportunity to present items for approval. The District Finance & Procedures Committee (F&P) Chair asks for Club approval of the items submitted to the clubs. The process worked this year to approve the District Budget with a lowering of District dues, changes to the MoP language and the structure component of Rotary Alive. Although all were approved, it should not be assumed that all is understood. Prior to the beginning of the new Rotary Year the Rotary Alive page of the District Website will be updated with the latest information and more details on all aspects of Rotary Alive. Structure The structure approved at the Assembly included the establishment of the District Governor Line, District Core, District Operating Line, District Core Functions, the Leadership & Training Function, and Governor’s Committees. District Governor Line (DGL) - The Governor leadership team including the District Governor (DG), District Governor Elect (DGE), District Governor Nominee (DGN). A fourth position is split over the course of the Rotary Year with the Immediate Past District Governor being a member of the DGL until the end of calendar year when the newly selected District Governor Nominee Designee (DGND) joins the leadership Team. The further development of the DGL is essential to the establishment of continuity in the leadership of the District. District Core – The heart of the District is the connection of the Operating Line with the Core Functions. District Operating Line – All multi-unit organizations have three key components; operations, staff, and executive leadership. The operating component of District 6990 is the District Operating Line, comprised of the Club Presidents, Area Governors (AG), and the Executive Area Governor (EAG). The EAG connects the Operating Line directly into the executive DGL. 6

The function includes District Rotary Training, Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI), Rotary Learning Center, and external leadership development. Governor’s Committees - Every Governor has a plan for creating something new. Governor Committees provide a Governor with the opportunity to test innovations over the course of the Year without impeding routine operation of the District. The brief description above is not intended to be an explanation but rather an introduction. More will come by way of the Rotary Alive page of the District Web Site. Every member will have the opportunity to fully understand the components of Rotary Alive. Joe Schumacker, DGE 7
