The Rosehill Review 22 May 2018 Term 2 ISSUE 2 Principal’s News Hello Rosehill Community, Recently we were privileged to hear Andrew Fuller, a clinical psychiatrist, talking about the adolescent brain. Believe me it makes for an interesting topic! I would like to share some of the basics that affect the workings of this intricate brain, so you can consider how your child may or may not be affected. All of this information is research based and backed by extensive scientific study. Brains need breakfast Breakfast eaters get 40% higher marks in maths. Kids who eat breakfast are less likely to be absent from school, and less likely to be late to school. Studies show non-breakfast eaters are twice as likely to be depressed, four times as likely to suffer anxiety, and 30% more likely to be hyperactive. Having a higher protein-lower carbohydrate mix for breakfast enhances concentration and memory. So avoid sugary cereals, juices and heaps of toast, and get some eggs, milk and porridge in. Foods that improve happiness, concentration and motivation Often making sure you get some exercise, sleep well and eat well can make an amazing difference to how switched on your brain can be. Foods that improve your ability to learn do not include sugary fizzy drinks, in fact that has quite the opposite effect. Foods that help learning include: almonds, fish, dairy, yoghurt, oats, chicken, pumpkin seeds, lean beef and milk. Happy eating. Nga mihi nui Maria Owers Principal

VISUAL ARTS at ROSEHILL INTERMEDIATE Please visit the hall foyer to see the wonderful display of Year 7 and Year 8 Art. We teach strategies for success in Art. Students create a portfolio of work to show their learning and progression in Practical Skills with different materials and styles. Year 7 - SHAPE YOUR WORLD - STILL LIFE YEAR 8 - WHO AM I ? - SELF PORTRAIT On Tuesday the 8th of May, Rosehill sent two boys teams to the Counties Intermediate Schools' Soccer Tournament. Our Year 7 team played in a round robin format losing two games winning three and drawing one. Overall the team finished in fourth place. Hopefully this team can build on this for next year. Our Year 8 team were unfortunately beaten in their first two games meaning that they could not contest the top four positions. They did recover to remain unbeaten for the rest of the competition finishing fifth overall. Well done to all the boys and thanks to the parents that came along to support.
I’m going to be an author… Amy Sarig King - My favourite author of the day “A Los Angeles Times Book Prize recipient, please welcome…” the audience hushed and I held my breath, it was as if I blanket had been thrown over the audience, our hearts booming as one.. “Amy Sarig King, let’s have a round of applause for her” the crowd erupted in screams and clapping as a mid-aged woman ran onto the stage, her golden hair flowing behind her, a wide grin covering her face like Nutella. “Hello everyone, man it’s good to be here in New Zealand” I sighed and whispered to my friend, “I bet they say that to every country they visit, why can’t they just be honest and say man you know I really hate travelling to New Zealand, I mean Aussie is way better” my friend laughed and thoroughly agreed with me. Only half an hour ago we had arrived at the Aotea center in Auckland city, for the Renowned Writers Festival. Where all nerds gathered together to listen to some famous authors, poets and illustrators talk, it may sound boring but if you ask any student from room 9 and 2, they’ll tell you just how amazing it was. We were soon seated in the auditorium and looked out across the sea of colorful students dressed in their school uniforms. After Amy King had talked to us we had a short 10 minute break followed by an interesting speech by Chris Riddell, an excellent drawer I might say and fabulous and writing kids books. There were 2 more authors talking to us after that, one of them was Rewa Worley a spoken word poet and the other author was Stacy Gregg a known writer who loves horses. My highlight of the day was listening to Amy King speak, I loved how she compared friendliness to pollution, it made me wonder how something very terrible can be compared to something amazing. It was a long day but after listening to the stories of how ordinary people like me and you could become fabulous writers earning over $60,000 a year. Straight away I was inspired to write and write and write some more, it was like someone had just told me if you love writing and put your heart into it then you can become an author…
Auckland Writers Festival Tuesday 15 May By Keira Thornborough When I first heard about this trip, I thought it was going to be boring: authors and poets doing long boring speeches, but, when we entered the Aotea Centre I started to wonder and this is where I was wrong, this was an inspirational trip that taught me A LOT. First we listened to A.S. King, she was very honest about her life. Amy Sarig King’s family had lost their family farm when she was 18 and it must’ve been devastating. She taught us about herself and how you don’t need ‘stuff’ to be able to live a great life. She and her husband started a farm from scratch and lived there for several years without buying anything except from the local market. Her latest book is called ‘Me and Marvin Gardens’ and features a creature that eats plastic. Next we saw Chris Riddell, and he was the funniest person ever! Chris even showed us how to sharpen a pencil before he started speaking. As he spoke he illustrated this talk. Chris had many funny stories to draw about his childhood. He is an amazing person with an even better personality inside. I would love to meet him especially as he is one of the illustrators from one of my favorite movies, ‘Coraline’. After lunch we met an amazing poet named Rewa Worley. He spoke from the heart and did some interactive parts. His poetry is called ‘Spoken word poetry’ and is writing that is meant to be read out. He even used students from schools as his helpers. Rewa made the mood lighten and was always smiling. Finally, we met a pony loving author named Stacy Gregg. She is an unique character who travels all over the world to get inspiration for her books. Stacy has met many different horses and ponies. Stacy bases all of her stories on real life. She was another author that I found funny and kind. Overall I thought this was the best school trip I have ever been on inspiring me and giving me many things to remember when I am writing. Amy Sarig King talks about Chris Riddell - author, Rewa Worley presenting Stacey Gregg speaks Me and Marvin Gardens illustrator and lover of spoken word poetry to our about her how she travels and gives the audience sprayed edges on books. interested audience. and gets ideas for her time to ask questions. writing.
‘You are never to old to learn’ and so we did! The Mind Lab’s Post Graduate Certificate in Digital and Collaborative Learning was offered to teachers and four of us enrolled in the thirty two week course as part of our ongoing professional development. Just like our students, at times we found ourselves deep in the ‘learning pit’ but the knowledge and skills we have acquired have helped keep us at the forefront of 21st century education. Graduation was held on April 11 and we were lucky to be given the day to celebrate our achievements. From left: Mrs Coetzee, Miss Brooks, Mrs Zimmermann and Mrs Fourie celebrate with Mr Goriel (an ex-Rosehill Intermediate teacher). Congratulations also to Mrs Watson who completed the qualification the previous year.
