Introduction About the Course The ProPharmace Preregistration Training Programme aims to reinforce trainees’ workplace training and help make sure they are in the best position to pass the registration examination. The course is open to any Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacist who will be undertaking their ‘pre-registration’ year. The course commences with a complementary Tutor Training workshop, following which students attend nine training days run over a nine month period. Training Team This course has been designed and organised by ProPharmace Professional Training, a specialist training provider that has helped many Pre-registration Trainee Pharmacists pass the registration exam. An experienced team of qualified pharmacists deliver the programme. Trainees are guaranteed a training experience which utilises the latest innovations in learning to enhance performance. Session 1: Complementary Tutor Evening Workshop Objectives At the end of the session tutors should be able to: • Understand the roles and expectations of being a Pre-registration Tutor • Assess trainees on performance standards and competence • Complete progress reviews and give feed back • Identify how and when to delegate tasks to trainees • Develop strategies to enhance trainees’ performance • Deal with challenges and problems that may arise during the preregistration year. Content / Teaching Style This workshop is aimed at new tutors and those who wish to refresh their teaching skills. There will be an interactive session featuring problems that may arise during the pre-reg year and ways to resolve them. “Brilliant workshop. Training Day 1: Introduction to the Training Year & Calculations - Part 1 Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Understand the contents of the GPhC syllabus, performance standards and registration exam. • Understand how to meet performance standards and complete records of evidence. • Tackle the different types of pharmaceutical calculations • Attempt exam style questions on pharmaceutical calculations • Complete a CPD entry Content / Teaching Style GPhC Syllabus Coverage This session will provide an overview of the Section 2: Clinical & entire year and highlight what is expected Pharmaceutical of trainees to guarantee a successful and Practice beneficial year. Training Day 2: Calculations Part 2 & Responding to Symptoms Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Apply the principles learned on day 1 to solve a range of pharmaceutical calculations. • Respond to a range of minor ailments and make appropriate recommendations. • Identify symptoms and conditions that require referral. • Outline the indications, and restrictions of OTC medications including POM to P switches. • Identify different types of skin conditions and recommend appropriate courses of action. • Target specific patient groups for health promotion. • Understand the purpose and process of audit and its application. Training Day 3: BNF Part 1 & Introduction to MURs Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Understand how to use the BNF effectively and efficiently • Identify key areas in the BNF which should be tabbed for easy reference. • Identify a range of characteristics of key drugs and drug classes in various chapters of the BNF. • Understand the purpose and benefits of MURs and be able to identify patients that can benefit from MURs in a pharmacy setting. Training Day 4: BNF Training Day 2 Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Understand and apply knowledge on various chapters of the BNF. • Evaluate clinical case studies and identify key drugs, their actions, uses, side- effects, adverse drug reactions, interactions and contra-indications. • Use the BNF confidently. Training Day 5: First Aid Training Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Assess and identify the nature of emergency situations. • Undertake the appropriate actions required including referral where appropriate • Apply knowledge and skills to provide emergency first aid in the following cases: • Obstruction to airways • CPR • A seizure • Shock • Loss of Consciousness • Electric shock • Severe bleeding • Overdoses and poisoning • Burns and scalds • Hypoglycaemia • Head injuries and concussion • Hyperglycaemia • Severe pain in head, chest or abdomen Content / Teaching Style GPhC Syllabus Coverage Section 2: Training will be carried out by a Clinical & Pharmaceutical Practice specialist First Aid training provider and trainees receive a HSE approved Part 1 Clinical Practice: certificate. Training Day 6: BNF for Children Drug Tariff & Introduction to Pharmacy Services Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Gain an insight into Paediatric medicines using the BNF for children as a resource • Understand the purpose of the drug tariff and how to use it effectively. • Understand the impact of Category M • Understand the importance of correct endorsing • Understand the various types of pharmacy services and their implications Content / Training GPhC Syllabus Coverage Trainees will be able to know when and how to use the BNF for children Section 2: Clinical & Pharmaceutical Practice Trainees are taken through the drug tariff to gain a clear Section 3: understanding of how to use the drug Systems and Procedures tariff efficiently as well as how to answer a) NHS Funding for Pharmacy Services exam style questions. d) Quality Assurance of Stock “I knew nothing about the Drug Tariff when I £ £ came to this session and on leaving I now know how to use it. Training Day 7: Medicines Ethics & Practice Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Understand the contents of the MEP guide • Have a clear understanding of the Controlled Drugs regulations • Understand the legal and professional aspects of providing a pharmaceutical service and the impact this has on a pharmacists day to day role. • Deal with various ethical dilemmas that could be faced in the pharmacy Content / Training GPhC Syllabus Coverage This training day addresses the Section 1: difficulties trainees encounter when Professional & Legal Practice reading and interpreting the contents of the MEP Guide. Training Day 8: Mock Exam Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Attempt full closed book and open book mock exam papers within the time limits set • Use the standard reference sources to locate information efficiently and accurately for the open book exam. Content / Training Attempting a mock exam will give trainees a simulated experience of the pressure faced in the registration examination. This experience will allow trainees to focus on areas that require further attention and is vital to ensure that trainees are fully prepared. “This is the first time I complete two full papers in one day. Training Day 9: Exam Preparation Objectives At the end of the day trainees should be able to: • Identify key areas of the exam syllabus where further revision is required. • Implement tips for good exam technique • Apply the knowledge learned to answer exam questions in a quick and efficient manner • Prepare to practice as a Pharmacist. Content / Training This training day is tailored to give trainees an overview of all the key topics where weaknesses have been identified in the mock exam. A vast range of exam style questions will be attempted in an interactive session with feedback and key hints and tips on how best to tackle exam questions. Optional Training Day : An insight into Hospital Pharmacy Objectives This training day has been designed for trainees who have not been able to undertake cross sector experience in a hospital pharmacy. It provides learning opportunities to ensure that the objectives for syllabus coverage of cross sector experience are addressed. ProPharmace online Support ProPharmace Online Exa ms ProPharmace online Exams To support ProPharmace Preregistration trainees in their revision for the registration exam, we have introduced an online revision tool, which includes a large online resource of practice exam questions. How much does a place on the course cost? A place on the training programme costs £1,050 plus VAT . Optional Hospital training day costs £125+VAT. Discounts apply for group bookings and contributing buying groups. The training takes place at the following venue: Our training sessions take place in a conference room in West London. Training days begin at 9:30 and end at 4:30. A one hour lunch break and short tea breaks are also included. All training days are held on weekends throughout the year; exact course dates to be confirmed. How do I apply? Applicants can apply by filling in the enclosed application form and faxing to ProPharmace on 0207 112 8287 The number of places on this course are strictly limited. Places are allocated on a first-come first-serve basis.
