Provincial Update: Ontario moves schools to remote learning following spring break • On April 12th, the Ontario government, in consultation with the CMOH announced that elementary and secondary schools will move to remote learning following April break. • In-person learning will continue for children with special-education needs who require additional support that cannot be accommodating remotely. • This move is in response to the rapid increase in COVID-19 cases, the increasing risk posted to the public by COVID-19 variants and the spike in hospital admissions. • Childcare for non-school aged children will remain open, before and after school programs will be closed and free emergency childcare for school-aged children of eligible health care and frontline workers will be provided.

AZ Update • On April 14th, Health Canada provided an update on the safety of the AZ vaccine, noting that after a thorough, independent assessment of the current data, the very rare events of blood clots associated with low levels of blood platelets following immunization may be linked to the use of the vaccine and as a result, has updated warnings in the product information to inform Canadians of the possible side effects. • Based on the review of available data from Europe, the UK and AstraZeneca, no specific risk factors have been identified and Health Canada is not restricting the use of the vaccine in any specific populations at this time. • Health Canada’s Chief Medical Advisor still recommends getting whatever vaccine is available – there is a very low risk that some patients could develop blood clotting; the benefits of this vaccine outweigh any risks.
