CLUB NEWS Did You Know? The Padang magazine turns 20 this year! Formerly known as The SCC Magazine, the publication was rebranded and introduced to Members as The Padang twenty years ago in 1999. In an era when digital media was uncommon,The Padang magazine played a vital role in keeping Members abreast of the Club’s activities. The Club chose The Padang as the magazine title to convey the close relationship between the SCC and the historic green field it occupies. For many years, the Padang field had witnessed numerous national celebrations and Club tournaments which were played on it; there was no better name to call the magazine than The Padang. Today, The Padang magazine reaches a wide readership of more than 20,000 readers spanning the globe and is available in both print and digital formats. This year, on its 20th anniversary, The Padang will evolve again – not only will it have a slightly different look, but we will also be bringing you more interesting lifestyle feature articles on the Club and its Members in addition to the regular content on SCC sports news, social event updates and dining promotions. We will also be enhancing the synergy between our print and digital communication platforms to reach an even wider audience and offer you greater variety in content. Thank you, The Padang readers! FOOD & BEVERAGE Chinese New Year Dishes Highlights The Reunion Dinner held on the eve of Chinese New Year marks the start of the festive feasting and celebration. As with many traditions carried out during this period by the ethnic Chinese to ensure a great year ahead, the Reunion Dinner usually features dishes and/or ingredients of auspicious significance that promise wealth, prosperity and health. This year at SCC, one of the special dishes our chefs have prepared for the CNY Oval Ala Carte Menu is the Claypot Roasted Pork with Bean Curd and Leek. While leeks are a fairly common ingredient in Chinese cooking, it is considered an auspicious ingredient to have during Chinese New Year… all because of the way its name is pronounced. The Chinese leek (大蒜) or “dasuan”’ in Mandarin, when pronounced, sounds like “counting” and symbolizes having wealth in abundance or, plainly-speaking, having lots of money to count! So if you want to ensure you’ll have pots of money to count this year, make sure you order and eat (clay)pots of our Claypot Roasted Pork with Bean Curd and Leek. Another must-have dish for Chinese New Year is the Yu Sheng. Also known as the “Prosperity Toss”, this salad-type dish consists of raw fish (usually salmon) or abalone mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, amongst other ingredients. Yu Sheng literally means “raw fish”, commonly conflated to “abundance”, and symbolizes abundance, prosperity and vigour. Diners gather around the table and recite auspicious sayings as they add the ingredients to the dish; each ingredient has its own symbolic lucky meaning. Then, the diners toss and mix the salad up with their chopsticks, and it is believed that the height of the toss reflects the height of the diners’ growth in fortune – explaining the often extremely enthusiastic tossing chaos that usually results! Please refer to Page 15 for our full list of Chinese New Year dining specials. 16 THE PADANG JAN / FEB 2019 Reservations are based on first-come-first-served basis. RE CE NT EVENTS Remembrance Day 11 November 2018 Each year, SCC holds a Remembrance Day service at the Centopah in Esplanade Park to honour the members of the armed forces who fought and died during World War One. This Remembrance Day 2018 was particularly significant as it marked a century since the end of World War One and befitting this, the British High Commission provided a Royal Navy Guard of 14 to support the SCC Cenotaph Act of Remembrance. In attendance were VIPS including Royal Navy Commander Martin Moore - UK Defence Adviser Singapore; Lieutenant Commander Aston Talbot - New Zealand Defence Force Liaison Officer; Colonel Jeffery Drummond – Canadian Defence Attache (Singapore/ Cambodia/ Vietnam); Captain So Won Ahn – Defence Attache, US Embassy Singapore; all of whom recited excerpts from the Pericles Eulogy, war poems “In Flanders Field” and “For the Fallen”, etc. SCC President Sher Baljit Singh said, “Every year, the Singapore Cricket Club holds this Remembrance Day service because we see it as a privilege to be able to honour the sacrifices made by the military in defending Singapore during the war. We are grateful for the kind support of the British High Commission in making this years’ service particularly special as we mark the 100th year since the end of World War 1. It is important to mark this, so we will always remember the price of peace and how vital it is for us to safeguard it.” The SCC Remembrance Day was covered in local media outlets ChannelNewsAsia, The Straits Times, and Lianhe Zaobao. S PORTS NEWS SCC Rugby U17 Boys: Going Bald for Charity Our SCC Rugby U17 team was in Dubai from 22 - 25 November 2018 to compete in an international Rugby 7s tournament organised by Dubai College. For most of the 12 players, their travels were funded by their parents. Two of the players though - local Singaporeans who are also part of the SCC Rugby Academy Scholarship Program - not only received some aid from the SCC Rugby Academy, but the U17/U16 players banded together in early-October and organised a car wash day at Dempsey to raise travel funds for their team mates! In addition, the SCC U17s felt that they wanted to more than play rugby; they wanted to do something for a meaningful cause and to show care to those in need. The touring boys decided to shave their heads in support of the Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) after training on 17 November 2018 “to tell children with cancer that it is OK to be bald”. The two coaches, Marc Lansonneur and Laurent Ducourneau, also joined their players in shaving their heads for charity. Incidentially, SCC U17s won the Dubai College Cup, beating last year’s cup holders Dubai College 19-5 in the finals. SCC applauds our boys for being the champions that they already are and for having such big hearts! In Conversation with Malaysian Professional Squash Player: Tan Wee Wern What are your 2019 plans? 2019 will be a big year for me. I only started playing again in July 2018 after being out for about 21 months from an injury. I have been back playing professionally in the past five to six months. So next year would really be like having a brand new start for me. How did you keep yourself from pressing forward after being out for 21 months? I started playing professional squash since I was 17 years old. So playing squash is all I know; not being able to train, to travel, and compete in tournaments was tough. It was a phase that I had to go through but I was fortunate to have a good team with me. They have been with me throughout my whole career and despite all my injuries, they did not give up on me. So I felt it was only right that I got back in training and playing again. If I decide to call it quit, it would pretty be much be like I am giving up on them. Every day is an improvement for me; it has not been easy but it is a process I have to go through and and it can only get better. You achieved the World No. 5 ranking in 2014. Now, you have had to start over again. How do you feel about that? There is good and bad. It is good in that I feel, it can’t get any worse than this. Where it feels bad is the frustration I have sometimes about not being able to do what I used to do in the past, especially when I know what I was able to achieve. At the same time though, it has been a reminder to me to really appreciate the sport; I think I didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have then – at that point in time, every tournament felt just like any other tournament. Being away for more than two years made me realised how much I missed the sport and should have enjoyed it a little bit more. We have many junior sportspersons playing different sports for SCC. For those considering a career in sports, what advice would you give them? would you want to give them if they are considering a career in sports? The desire has to come from within. Even with all the talent that you have, it really has to come from within because at the end of the day, it is all about hard work and persistence. At the same time though, while you are working towards your aspirations, it would also be wise to make sure you have something that you can fall back on in case of any unforeseen circumstances. 26 THE PADANG JAN / FEB 2019
S P O RTS N E WS S P ORTS NEWS 71ST SCC International Rugby 7s ends on a high Daveta reclaims Ablitt Cup with a spirited showing from Casuarina Cougars Report by Jonathan Leow The Singapore Cricket Club International Rugby 7s (SCC 7s) ended on a high note on Sunday, 4 November 2018, as Daveta from Fiji reclaimed the Ablitt Cup in the rain against a Casuarina Cougars side that were in their first final since 1984. The Cougars had played most of the tournament with only 8 players in their squad but had upset the likes of Hong Kong Dragons and Ponsonby from New Zealand in their run to the finals of the Ablitt Cup. Daveta on the other hand, had a seemingly easy group round on day 1 of the tournament, and had cruised to what seemed like an easy start with a quarter final against the hosts Singapore Cricket Club. It ended up being a game for the day, with the local club holding the Fijians for most of the first half. It was however a game of inches, and it was the Fijians that came out 12 – 5 over a club side that boasted several Singapore national team players. It was an afternoon that was perfect for rugby 7s, with overcast clouds cooling the some 3,500 assembled who turned up at the majestic Padang for some great rugby. It was the Schools and Colleges finals up first, with Anglo Chinese School (Independent) coming out 33 – 5 winners over United World College (Dover Campus) to win the Len Foster Trophy for the Under 14 category. The French School Lycée Français de Singapour played some champagne rugby to come up similar 33- 5 winners over the Tanglin Trust School to win the John Clark Shield for the Under 16 age group. In the Under 18 age group, Tanglin Trust School came up winners 15- 7 over United World College (Dover Campus) to win the Sithawalla Cup. After the Schools and Colleges finals, the crowd was warmed up to the Bowl final, where Kurumi from Japan won the Bowl against the SCC Barbarians. In the Plate final, the Asian Games gold medalists Hong Kong Dragons were up against the side from Perth, Cottesloe, who came up winners over Hong Kong Dragons. The Shield final was a great one where another Japanese club, Tamariva were spirited but lost to long-time visitors Palmyra from Australia. So it came to the Ablitt Cup final with a heavy downpour not stopping any proceedings. The Casuarina Cougars game up strongly to hold Daveta in the first minutes of the game, but it was the Fijians who drew first blood. A couple of quick tries to end the half seemed to signal the end for the boys from Darwin but they came back strong to score a couple, closing the gap to a try, losing 17-24. In the end, it was a great way to end a TOURNAMENT RESULTS great tournament, with Daveta’s Mesake Schools and Colleges: Varo being named Player of the Final, and • U18 – Sithawalla Cup: Tanglin Trust School Daveta’s Leveni Tani winning the Ashforth • U16 – John Clark Shield: Lycée Français de Singapour Trophy for Player of the Tournament. • U14 – Len Foster Trophy: Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) Ablitt Cup • Winner: Daveta Rugby Club • Runner up: Casuarina Cougars Rugby Club Plate • Winner: Cottesloe Rugby Football Club • Runner up: Hong Kong Dragons Shield • Winner: Palmyra Rugby Union Club • Runner up: Tamariva Rugby Football Club JAN / FEB 2019 THE PADANG 27

SCC bowlers Josephine Lim and Amira Goh combined with May Lee from Singtel to claim the bronze medal in the Women Triples. Matthew Ngui skippered his fours team of Bernard Foo, Law Kwok Fai and Anthony Loh (all from Evergreen LBC) to a silver medal, falling in the finals to Hong Kong by a solitary shot. Shermeen Lim showed her class when she defeated the SEA Games and Commonwealth Games gold medalist Emma Saroji of Malaysia in the semi-finals to get into the gold medal match against Japan. She took her form into the finals and defeated her Japanese counterpart in straight sets to claim the Singles crown. Congratulations to all winners! National Singles League and National Fours After capturing the Asian Singles title, Shermeen Lim continued her scintillating form to win the National Singles league in December. She beat Leng Li Li from Singapore Power in straight sets and earned the rights to represent Singapore at the World Cup in Warilla come March 2019. Euan Wong, Matthew Ngui, Melvin Tan and Wong Hui Kai from SCC successfully defended their Men’s Fours title at the Kallang Lawn Bowls Green in November. They were undefeated in their group matches and beat their opponents from ELBC in the finals 14-9. Congratulations to all for their efforts! SCC Drawn Triples A total of seven drawn triples teams participated. In the first semi- final, Melvin, Lew Foong and Velu defeated Christian, Anwar and Ben. In the other semi-final, Ganesh, Candy and Purush defeated Chai, Retna and Srinivasan. The 3rd place encounter was a high quality match, with brilliant shot-making and close heads. S PORTS Cricket Convenor: Hugh Darwell | Article by: Vijay Jeyaratnam & Arjun Kakar SCC at HKCC. The Cricket Section’s 2019 season beckons and certainly promises to be a landmark year with stiff competition for spots across all teams. With SCC Tigers successfully defending the Div 1 premiership title for the Club and an outstanding performance by SCC Lions to make it to the finals of the T20 competition in 2018, we are certainly set to carry this momentum in to 2019. The 2018 season ended with two extremely well organised and attended tours: the first one to the historic Hong Kong Cricket Club and our first tour to the Clark 6’s. Due credit to the tour managers Peter Murray and James Kilbee for these respective tours. The Section continues to build and strengthen our reciprocity with clubs in the region via these tours and the recently concluded reciprocal arrangements with Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) is a testimony to the same. A special thanks to the General Committee for assisting with this landmark development. Our growing strength and quality in league performances is also being recognised at the national level with some SCC players donning the Singapore colours. Abhiraj Singh, Anish Paraam and Arit Dutta represented Singapore at the ICC World Cricket League division 3 in Nov 2018 in Oman. Singapore competed against the host nation Oman, USA, Kenya, Uganda and Denmark in a competition that had a lot at stake for each team, as the top two would progress to division 2, which is a huge step towards gaining One Day International status. SCC cricketers gave a strong account of themselves. It is heartening to note that two standout performances for Singapore came from SCC players Aritra Dutta and Anish Paraam. Aritra made a match defining 87 off 80 balls against Denmark as Singapore set a target 254 & Anish scored a fantastic 85 off 93 balls in a mammoth chase of 324 against Kenya, which Singapore nearly gunned down. Arit and Anish were the top 2 run scores for Singapore in the tournament. Arit was adjudged Man of the Match for his performance against Denmark and was the third highest run getter across all the teams in the tournament, amassing 202 runs in 5 games. The Cricket Section’s AGM and Awards Night took place on 9 November and the Committee would like to welcome Suresh From top: Aritra Dutta receiving his Man of Match award VS Denmark; SCC Cricket Kalpathy as the new Convenor and thank our outgoing Convenor Section Committee 2019; Navin receiving the Section Cricketer of the Year Award from Hugh Darwell following an exceptional stint at the helm of affairs.
