Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Sing a song, full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; Sing a song, full of the hope that the present has brought us; O! say does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave, Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT TIFFANY D. CROSS DOCTOR OF HUMANE LETTERS (L.H.D.) DEGREE Your journey from Cleveland, Ohio, to the Benedict College campus in Columbia, South Carolina, has been one of climbing higher mountains to reach ever increasing goals and accomplishments. Along the way, you made pivotal stops in Atlanta, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and many other cities too numerous to list here. At each stop, you accentuated your career path, expanded your horizons, and exposed your innate abilities and skills as you ascended from former District of Columbia Bureau Chief, BET News, to Liaison to the Obama Administration for the BET Network, to Resident Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy Institute of Politics, to Bestselling Author, Say It Louder: Black Voters, White Narratives, and Saving Our Democracy, to the current host of the weekly, national broadcast, of The Cross Connection on MSNBC. Your career illustrates the importance of hard work and being prepared to meet the moment. There is no doubt that these values were reinforced in your life during your time at Clark Atlanta University, a sister institution, that not only educates the mind, but also nurtures the spirit of students with unwavering belief in their present abilities and steadfast faith in their futures. You flawlessly explain the intricacies of the government to a nationwide audience by revealing their power and voice as you said: “I really believe when people understand government better, it gives them a better sense of their own agency and their role in the American body politics.” Your passion for involving citizens in democracy, is demonstrated throughout your bestselling book, Say It Louder: Black Voters, White Narratives, and Saving Our Democracy, which examines the perspectives of Black voters, their role in shaping democracy, and the media’s role in shaping these narratives. Your informed presence in the media at CNN and MSNBC is matched by your intellectualism in the academy as Resident Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy Institute of Politics where you mentor and inspire students with discussions about representation in media, diplomacy, election infrastructure and security, leadership on Capitol Hill and the campaign trail, and bridging the partisan divide. Your broad experience across media, politics, and policy includes more than two decades of navigating newsrooms and campaigns while engaging different constituencies on the ground. Your work includes service as a senior advisor to one of the country’s largest labor organizations to assist communities of color on both a local and national level to help shape the narrative around issues, individuals, and ideologies. For your distinguished service in the humanities, public through the media, and a powerful voice that speaks through your books, commentaries, documentaries, and life experiences; Benedict College is pleased to welcome you into its family of distinguished honorary degree recipients who represent in precept and by example, #TheBESTofBC!” The Doctor of Humane Letters (L.H.D.) Degree is conferred upon persons who have distinguished themselves in the humanities.

DEGREE You progressed through the ranks of the academy from Vice President of Business at Claflin University, to Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at Midlands Technical College, to President and Chief Executive Officer of Midlands Technical College in 2015. Your academic resume is a sterling example of touch points in higher education that prepared you for your current position, having earned an associate’s degree in Management from Midlands Technical College, a bachelor’s degree in Business and Economics from Benedict College, a master’s degree in Administration from Central Michigan University, and a Doctorate of Business Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University. The Doctor of Business (D.B.) degree is conferred upon persons who have distinguished themselves in business, management, and the community.
THE ACADEMIC REGALIA The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students used them to keep warm in medieval castles and halls of learning. From these practical origins, they have developed into the accepted garb which symbolizes scholarly achievement. The master’s degree gown is worn open, and the sleeve is cut so that the forearm comes through a slit just above the elbow. Gowns for the doctor’s degree are also worn open. They carry broad, velvet panels down the front, and three velvet bars on the full round sleeves. This velvet triming may be either black or the color distinctive of the degree. Mortar boards or caps worn with baccalaureate and master’s gowns generally have black tassels. The tassel of the doctoral cap is usually made of gold bullion. The hood gives color and real meaning to the academic costume. Its silk lining bears the color of the institu- tion conferring the degree. The hood is bordered with velvet of a prescribed width and color to indicate the field of learning to which the degree pertains as follows: medicine, green; music, pink; nursing, apricot; pharmacy, olive green; public administration, peacock blue; science, golden yellow; social work, citron; theology, scarlet; architecture, brown; arts, letters, and humanities, white; business, drab; dentistry, lilac; education, light blue; engineering, orange; fine arts, brown; law, purple; philosophy, dark blue. Faculty members and guests in today’s procession are wearing gowns and hoods which represent their dis- ciplines, their degrees and the institutions from which they received degrees. THE MEDALLION OF HONORS To demonstrate their high academic achievement through the School of Honors, these graduates receive the Medallion of Honors. The gold medallion contains a torch inside a V for Victory and is hung on a purple and white ribbon. The medallion is worn by Honors Seniors at formal convocation activities, graduation, and serves as a reminder of their commitment to world service. THE COLLEGE MACE The ceremonial academic mace is an historical amalgam of the regal scepter of rulers with the weapon-like instrument known as a mace. Academic maces are historically regarded as manifestations of the ‘immortal dignity’ of colleges and universities and thus represent the past, present and future. The College Mace is carried in procession on occasions of outstanding importance, such as commencements, convocations, and formal dedications. The placement of the Mace on its stand signals that the proceedings are about to come to order; its retirement indicates the conclusion of the exercises. The College Mace was commissioned as a gift to the College by the Class of 2002. It was designed and fashioned by sculptor and Assistant Professor of Art, Michael Hale of Benedict College. It is fifty-two inches in length, constructed of bronze, velvet, and oak. Surmounting the Mace is the Great Seal of the College cast in solid bronze. A sphere made of four bronze stanchions represents the Office of the President, Administration, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs. The sphere sits upon a bronze greave representative of the College’s Board of Trustees. The staff of the Mace is constructed of solid oak with sixteen cabochon amethysts set in 24-carat gold bezels. The oak staff represents the strength of our academic programs and the amethysts are representative of the College’s eleven academic departments, five schools, faculty, staff, and students. The solid bronze greave at the base of the staff is representative of our founder, Mrs. Bathsheba Benedict. The Mace is completed with a final bronze sphere. The four stanchions of the final sphere represent the original vocations offered by the College: Teaching, Preaching, Painting, and Carpentry. Ms. Jacasia Rowe, President of the Senior Class, is carrying the College Mace at today’s convocation.
THE PRESIDENT’S MEDALLION The 3 1/2” cast bronze President’s Medallion encompasses the Benedict College Seal inscribed with the words, “Office of the President,” on the outer border. The Medallion is suspended from the neck chain containing fourteen small bronze panels and two decorative laurel wreaths on the connecting links. Thirteen bronze panels are engraved with the names of the former Benedict College presidents. The fourteenth bronze panel is engraved with the name of the current president. The President’s Medallion was carried aboard the space shuttle Columbia in its 2.5 million mile voyage around the earth in 1986.
