TECHNICAL 11 SYDNEY SUPERYACHT MARINA SEWAGE PUMP OUT SYSTEM UPGRADE T his standout marina was first built in the late nineties to accommodate visitors to the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Since that time, not only have the yachts gotten bigger but the requirements of many of the yacht owners have reached the point where a number of upgrades to facilities are required. Clemens Overdijk, the Marina Manager since 2016 has been very interested in ensuring that their customers get the best experience possible. One aspect that is very important to many yacht owners is the ability to quickly and cleanly discharge any wastewater from their vessels. No one wants leaks or the risk of overflows, or odours and importantly no one wants to spend hours tied up discharging wastewater. Or even worse needing to go to a different marina to discharge. There are many smaller marinas now unable to handle the size of the tanks, New Pump Station Upgrade and touch screen application. or the depth of the yachts, causing them to go elsewhere, at quite a cost. An important bonus for the yacht owners is that each berth offers a direct connection to the vacuum system. Clemens looked at a variety of solutions from around the world and found that Flovac, a local company, was doing large scale marina sewage systems at a number of large marinas around the world and catering to the largest of yachts. These included projects in Barcelona, Spain, Italy and Greece. Remote Activation of Pumps One aspect of the work that Flovac had been doing around the world was in the technology space. Flovac uses IOT (Internet of Things) technologies to enable remote troubleshooting of the system as well as remote operation of the system. Many existing pump out systems require the yacht manager to locate the pump station, turn it on manually (if it is working), go back Sydney Superyacht Marina, Sydney. to their yacht to start the operation which may take many hours to complete. E D U C AT I O N N E W S 13 STEFAN BORZECKI CMP C ongratulations to Stefan Borzecki; long standing MIA Board member who has been awarded the globally recognised Certified Marina Professional (CMP) designation. Stefan has been a Certified Marina Manager (CMM) for many years. However with his more recent move out of active marina management and into broader marina industry activities the CMP designation is seen as more appropriate. The Global Marina Institute (GMI) has recently simplified the process for transitioning from CMM to CMP. GMI is actively encouraging former marina managers still active in the industry to consider this opportunity which ensures their ongoing participation in the associated Continuing Professional Development program and wider industry acknowledgement of their globally recognised designation. 2020 EDUCATION & MEETING TIMETABLE DATE MEETING COURSE LOCATION All year round Club Marine Extreme Weather Preparedness Course World wide - Online UP2 June Tasmania - Members & Industry Networking Meeting Tasmania - Online DA New South Wales - MIA & BIA 2020 Members & 10 June NSW - Online Industry Networking Meeting TE Club Marine Emergency Preparedness Online Course 17 June Australian Eastern Region - Online Part 2 Live session S 18 June Webinar – Risk Management for Marinas World wide - Online Western Australia - MIA 2020 Members & Industry O 23 June WA - Online Networking Meeting N Online Intermediate Marina Management Course (incl. 14 U P DAT E S AUSTRALIAN ENERGY REGULATOR DEVELOPMENTS A s Australian readers of Waterline may be aware MIA has been agitating since early 2019 for an industry wide exemption from the embedded electricity network obligation for marinas. On the 27th March 2020 MIA was informed through the relevant Ministers office that MIA should make a formal submission regarding its concerns by seeking consideration of marina “berths” being specifically listed as an exclusion (e.g. in the listing of industries covered: delete “Marinas” and insert “Marinas (except berths)”). This would bring certainty, clarity, efficacy, and AER compliance of land-based premises and their commercial activities to the marina industry (whilst excluding water- based berths). MIA is pursuing this course of action and will keep members up to date on MPOD 300 recently unveiled at Sanctuary Cove by Patron Power. further developments.
