Welcome to Oz! Dear (Virtual) Audience Members, We are so excited to transport you to Kansas, to Oz, and then back again for this performance of The Wizard of Oz. What a year it has been! Persevering through COVID-19 has been a remarkable challenge, but we were determined to find a way to produce The Wizard of Oz, having been merely six days away from opening night when the pandemic pulled the rug out from under us. The credit for being able to produce this show, with everything pre-recorded and a variety of safety procedures to ensure we could avoid the spread of COVID within the cast and crew, goes largely to Mrs. Jenn Kraemer. She has put in countless hours, going well above and beyond what anyone could possibly demand or expect, to ensure our kids could perform this show, and I simply cannot adequately express my gratitude to her. Our students, and I, are so lucky to have her It is impossible to truly thank everyone who contributed to this production, but I want to take a moment to thank Manley Gavich in particular, who not only created and taught all the choreography in the show, but also consulted on a number of projects, and called the show so that I could help out backstage. He is a true gem and we are so happy that he calls OMCS home. Thanks also to Beth Clark and Jessica Skinner for their work on costumes, Hannah Rosier for wearing many hats, Ceridwen Stermer and her crew for their scenery work, Cara Starkweather for her help with sponsors, and the many parents who gave up their time to help in numerous ways. I am personally grateful for getting to work alongside Jenn and Andy – I couldn’t ask for a better team. Lastly, I want to give a shout-out to the students. March 14, 2020 may be, years from now, the most heartbreaking day in my teaching career, as the students heard the news that school was going remote and the show was going to be postponed. I would like to acknowledge our 2020 seniors – Justin, Kaelyn, Tassia, Dylan, and Ashley – who worked tirelessly for three months, never to see their efforts brought to fruition. They were all very much in our hearts as we carried on in their stead. And to this year’s cast – you guys were so patient, so understanding, as Mrs. K and I navigated some really tricky and foreign waters. They kept
digging deeper when we asked for “one more take” (which was often several more takes), or told them they needed to make their gestures bigger, or reminded them that, no, they couldn’t sing while acting on stage (what a strange thing to tell the cast of your musical!). The kids are so dear to Jenn and I – the last couple of months with them have been a treasure for us both, and we are proud beyond measure. To the parents, staff, administration, and community of OMCS - thank you for your support of our students, who have given so much to this endeavor, and to the arts in general. Please enjoy the show! Most sincerely, Holly E. Campbell
