An eventful start to the month leads to a well-deserved break Enjoy the week away as we take aim at the school year’s stretch run Greetings to the Malden High School Community: What a difference a year makes. Last year on the Friday before April break, we were surrounded by uncertainty and anxiety. We faced a situation that none of us had foreseen or dealt with before, as we were one month into the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. A year later? The pandemic is still with us, regrettably, with people still becoming sick and worse. Fall 2 Sports have arrived!! It's been nearly a year and a half since the whistle has been blown to kick off a high school football game for the teams in the Greater Boston League (GBL). Thanksgiving Day 2019 was the last competition for GBL schools in any sport in the traditional fall season, including Malden High, Everett High and Revere High in the Advocate's readership area. The other GBL schools are Medford, Somerville and, added this year, Chelsea, Lynn Classical and Lynn English. While every other league in the state kicked off their Fall 2 seasons in late February-early March, the GBL held off preseason play until late in March and into early April. The chief reason for holding back the start was the fact that some of the GBL communities have had some of the highest rates of both COVID-19 which are running until May 16.
