like water for Chocolate June 22 -July 1 CHOREOGRAPHY BY CHRISTOPHER WHEELDON MUSIC BY JOBY TALBOT BASED ON THE NOVEL BY LAURA ESQUIVEL Two-time Tony Award®-winner Christopher Wheeldon’s new full-length ballet Like Water for Chocolate brings the magical realism of the famous modern Mexican novel and award-winning film of the same name to ABT. Journey into Laura Esquivel’s acclaimed and captivating family saga where the central character Tita, bound by family duty and tradition, falls in forbidden love with her neighbor Pedro. When her emotions spill over into her cooking, her only form of expression, everyone around her is influenced in startling and dramatic ways. With masterfully crafted scenes and passionately amorous pas de deux, Like Water for Chocolate is a thrilling new co-production with The Royal Ballet. Leadership support of ABT’s New Works Initiative is provided by Mark Casey and Carrie Gaiser Casey, The Ted and Mary Jo Shen Charitable Gift Fund, and through an endowed gift from The Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. I inherited my love for photography. My grandmother kept family photos inside a trunk that I inherited from my mother and that I currently treasure. Inside lies a collection of photos dating from 1860 to now. Opening the trunk of memories was a ritual that my mother liked to repeat for me to enjoy. I liked to see myself with eyes that looked at me from a time out of time. From a space out of space. There, I could see what others looked at, what others witnessed. But there were some photos that especially captured my attention, those were the ones where Tita appeared, a great-aunt whom I never even met. She was a beautiful woman who my great-grandmother never let marry. I observed that with the passage of time, her face hardened, and her eyes demanded a better destiny. Trying to give it to her, I wrote Like Water for Chocolate. Seeing the pain in Tita prompted me to transform her; and transforming her made me a different woman. Every vision seeks to share, point out, spread. Vision transforms and enriches. Lately, I wonder why I see what I see and who does that turn me into? Observing Tita made me a witness to her pain, her bitterness, and her infinite sadness, but now, 33 years later, I think that what I saw in Tita was my fear of being castrated. The Tita that I see now is different from the one I saw before, because the eyes that look at her have changed. Writing Like Water for Chocolate changed Tita’s story at the same time as my destiny. Since then, writing has served me as an instrument of transformation and knowledge. The characters that I choose, the words that I select, have formed a warp where I have woven answers that leave me with the certainty that the future begins today and depends on what I choose to see, on what I allow myself to say, on what I want to remember and of what I decide to love. In this area, I am convinced that the memories of the wonderful montage that Christopher Wheeldon and his team have created will accompany me forever. And every time I remember them, they will become magical archetypes that release imprisoned energy within me and project them into the light. The music, the movement, the wonderful performances of the dancers, the costumes, the scenery, the musicians, and the amazing choreography working in unison become powerful. A pure alchemy. They show us what has never been seen before: the heartbeat in Tita and Pedro’s chest, Chencha’s last breath and the way her spirit rises to heaven, the way affections are tied and unleashed within the De la Garza family, and finally, the way they free and purify a castrated heart. All this through moving images full of poetry. Amazing images that fly, turn, appear, disappear, transform, and finally catch on fire with love. My eyes, fond lovers of images and photography, will never get tired of taking in so much light. So much magic. Those who are still wondering what magic realism is, here you have the answer.
Giselle July 3 -July 8 CHOREOGRAPHY AFTER JEAN CORALLI, JULES PERROT, AND MARIUS PETIPA STAGED BY KEVIN McKENZIE MUSIC BY ADOLPHE ADAM Considered ballet’s ultimate tale of unrequited love, heartbreaking loss, and triumphant forgiveness, Giselle remains a timeless favorite. A heart- wrenching saga of betrayed love and mercy, the ballet’s exquisite grace tells the story of the titular village maiden and a handsome villager named Albrecht. What Giselle does not know is that her new paramour, a young nobleman in disguise, is already betrothed to another. A romantic triangle emerges that brings passion, death, and everlasting love. American Ballet Theatre’s performances of Giselle are generously supported through an endowed gift from Sharon Patrick. Skylar Brandt in Giselle. Photo: Emma Zordan.

Swan lake July 10 -July 15 CHOREOGRAPHY BY KEVIN McKENZIE AFTER MARIUS PETIPA AND LEV IVANOV MUSIC BY PETER ILYITCH TCHAIKOVSKY Of all the great classics performed by ABT today, Swan Lake remains the quintessential ballet. Cursed to spend eternity as a swan, Odette, once a beautiful princess, is only able to return to her human form in the hours of darkness. To break the spell, Odette’s true love must swear eternal fidelity and marry her. When she meets Prince Siegfried and falls in love, Odette has the chance to change her fate. However, von Rothbart, the evil sorcerer who cursed Odette, plots to ruin Odette and Siegfried’s romance with deceit and betrayal. Set to Tchaikovsky’s glorious score and featuring the unforgettable corps de ballet moving in magical unison as majestic swans, this romantic fable of dreamlike transformation inspires awe and wonder for all. Romeo and Juliet July 18 -July 22 CHOREOGRAPHY BY KENNETH MACMILLAN MUSIC BY SERGEI PROKOFIEV Against the sumptuous setting of Renaissance Italy, Kenneth MacMillan draws emotional depth from the immortal romance of Romeo and Juliet. Although Juliet Capulet and Romeo Montague come from two warring families, when they meet at the Capulets’ ball, they fall in instantaneous love, transcending the hatred between their kin. The pair marries in secret to avoid further conflict between the families. Even so, a battle between Romeo and Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin, ensues and sets off a series of events that turns this love story into a tragedy. Prokofiev’s unforgettable music underscores the beauty and passion of this beloved ballet and its star-crossed lovers. “Not all choreographers are good directors, but Christopher Wheeldon is...Expertly crafted ensemble scenes are full of buoyant energy, action, and rhythmic dancing. And the pas de deux are playful, with inventive imagery. The solidity of the production and the imagination of Esquivel’s world keep this ballet an engrossing, propulsive, fulfilling watch.” — Lindsay Winship, The Guardian Cassandra Trenary and Daniel Camargo in Like Water for Chocolate.
