CHAIRMAN’S CHIRP Hi Triumph friends !! I hope you members had a festive Christmas and Happy new year and now ready to tackle 2018. Insofar as that guy with the red suit is concerned, I trust he was more accommodating with you guys than with Debbie and me!. We wrote such a nice request asking for a Triumph (any Triumph) and also mentioned that we have been very good all year, only to find that he dropped in and left a bottle of bath salts and a cake of soap on a rope ! we have decided not to write to him again. I wish to extend hearty congratulations to all those members that received medals for the concourse. Many of you worked very hard to get your cars up to standard for judging on D- day and maybe you still have time to make it even better using your results to gauge where you could improve. Soon all the visitors will be gone and we can get our Triumphs out again and have fun. Tri- umph has a large range of sports cars and saloons which makes is easy to choose a Triumph to fit your style and pocket. We have arranged our next noggin for this Saturday the 13th January 2018 at the VCC in Kloof and from our last outing there, it promises to be a special event where we can safely park and admire our cars and have an old fashioned braai in really nice surroundings. As far as drinks are concerned we have to use the club bar at club prices. I appeal to you to make every effort to attend. I need to remind members that the present Committee ‘s term expires at our Annual General Meeting on 13 February. Please forward your nominations before this date. At the time of writing this chat I am not sure if the present Committee is prepared and willing to extend their terms for another year as most, except me, have served for a few years on a trot. I should remind our members that a club cannot exist with the same committee members do- ing it year after year. We all lead busy lives, but members should be willing to donate their time and effort for the successful running of the club for a term or two. A special thanks to Phillip de Kock who served as Vice Chair and made the trip from the South Coast to Durban to attend the committee meetings! Also to Andy and Eileen Le Roux for their solid commitment once again this year, Val Bowden, who despite all challenges per- formed her Event duties without fail. To Trish McDonald who uplifted regalia to a new level in terms of stock control and moving old stock, well done and thank you. To Debbie, who has done a sterling job and who also keeps me in check, a hearty thanks. As a club we are looking forward the Nationals in Bloemfontein in March and judging from the standard at our last club concourse, we should bring home some silverware !. I hope this year will be good one with a big participation and involvement from all the mem- bers with their cars. Regards OverdriveDave

EDITORS BLOG Hi Triumph Friends Seasons Greetings for a fantastic 2018. I noted a very positive note amongst most people that I have en- countered since the turn of the New Year. I am not sure whether it is an underlying feeling of positivity since the change on the political scene or maybe just a feeling of “Well thank goodness that year is over!” 2017 was a difficult year for most of us, probably because the value of money has shifted enor- mously and of course the price of everything increased a couple of times during the year. The one good thing is our Triumphs have maintained their value and probably even increased a bit. So keep those Triumphs shiny clean, free of rust and in good running order. I feel quite strange only giving you a newsletter every second month, but it has become quite difficult to put together a newsletter now that my company has grown so much and of course now that I also have the shop. I have always had great pleasure in doing the newsletter, a sort of gift to you, the members but of recent it has become difficult to find material and time is just not so available anymore. I am always very grateful for any material that you send me, this month we have two lovely stories submit- ted by Darryl and Rosemary Hurter. Now that they are on their own, they are wanting to spend more rec- reational time with their hobbies and interests. They have both gone through a tough time letting go of their children and so have David and Anne Blaire, whom I hope will give us their story for the next newslet- ter, on their visit to their children in Australia now over the Christmas season. The other story published in this issue is from Shirley Lambiris on the spray painting of her Spitfire. My admiration for this woman climbs every time I hear or see what she has done to her Triumph. I don’t know of any other woman like her, she is a LEGEND and she’s a Triumph Member! As some of you may know, we haven’t been able to create a new website as yet but I have had the kindest offer from JAWS (John Austin Williams) from Johannesburg centre to create the website and manage it for us! So I will definitely be chasing that one up as soon as I get a chance. I have formed a Facebook group which is a platform meant to share photos, information on runs and events, stories of members and their cars and in fact it is sup- posed to be a platform where all members can submit anything that they might find of interest and value to the other Triumph members. Unfortunately it is a closed group and I also have not managed to notify all members of this FB group, due to time con- straints and taking on too much! So I might have to reconsider this one. It was meant to be a substitute for the website. I shall get around to it in time. Looking forward to the noggin on Saturday and swopping stories of all the wonderful things that you members would have got up to. Drive carefully! Debbie van der Westhuizen EDITOR THE LAST OUTPOST KZN.
Darryl Hurter gets his story published in TRIUMPH WORLD Submitted by Darryl Hurter The point of this is that I was a runner up in the competition in the new writers competition in Triumph World Magazine. Please include my explanation below. The magazine article has more detail than my previous account. thanks Darryl Back in May I shared my Simola Hill climb story with John Clancy in the UK. He produces DVDs relating to all the Triumph models and suggested I send it to Tri- umph World Magazine. The Editor, Simon Goldsworthy, was impressed and told me to include more background and photos on the Chicane and enter the article in the magazines new writers competition. A month ago I received an e mail to say I was one of runners up and had won one hundred pounds!! I’m so happy that it was then included in the very next issue as you can see. My subscription is digital and the hard copy is not on the CNA shelves yet but you can be sure I will buy a couple of the real thing. I just thought you would like to know. See you on Saturday at the Noggin. Darryl.
SOUTH COAST YEAR END NOGGIN
Just a few shots of the year end nogging for the South coast. We wish you and the Durban club a happy Christmas and a happy motoring new year. Regards Brian and the South Coasters
She Gets a New Coat Part 2 By Shirley Lambiris After months of sanding, filling, treating rust, re-sanding, re-filling etc., etc., etc.,……. It is now time to start prepping the car for paint. Step one, clean the garage! That took us a weekend. Then we had to put a roof into the ga- rage to stop dust and dirt falling down onto the car. We also put in plastic sheeting around the walls to also keep dust under control. That took us another 2 weekends! Then I had to go and buy myself a spray gun, connectors, and a water trap. Then I went and got the primer, paint, hardener and thinners. First up was the doors, front valance, boot lid, and all the iddy biddy bits that bolt onto vari- ous parts of the car to hold other bits on. We had fun hanging these from a painting pole strung between 2 ladders. Before primering After primering
Next came the car itself. Firstly, we put her up on axle stands to give better access to the sills and axle. This also involved taking the car’s rear wheels and front suspension and hubs off. Masking the car was next. The books recommend not using newspaper, but it works well if you are prepared to take the time to put masking tape all over the joins so that the paint does not find its way into somewhere you don’t want it. Primering the car wasn’t too difficult. A lot of patience and three coats later, it was done. We now had to flat down the primer, and then clean the car (AGAIN!!) to ensure there was no dust or grease on the body.
Once the primering had been completed, then came the white top coat. This was where I started to nip straws as this is the bit that everbody sees! I can’t hide any boboos! On the whole, this went very well – there were a couple of waterfalls (not quite Niagara though!!). Here she is post paint and the suspension and wheels back on. Not looking to bad hey! The last instalment of this will be when we have finished flatting, polishing and re-assembling the car! Putting the bits back on will be fun as I struggle to remember where all the parts go and how to put them back, but that is another story. Cheerio.
A TRIUMPHANT RESTORATION Fonnie Nortje bought this car brand new in 1992 and has had it ever since. Over the years he passed it on to his son, Luke, who used it up until a couple of months ago when he got married. The car had accumulated over 200 000km of city driv- ing by then. Every moving part has been replaced with original factory parts or refurbished and the bodyshell was resprayed in the original factory colour and all window rub- bers replaced. The engine and engine compartment are both pristine and the car runs like a dream. Okay, it’s not a Triumph but a Toyota 1600 Twin Cam Executive, with aircon and leather interior. The Toyota looks great parked next to my Chicane on a recent outing.
Unfortunately, the Veteran Car Club is not staging a concours day this year, so the car won’t get the recognition it deserves. Look out for it at the Noggin on Saturday. Keep the revs up. Darryl
