All the best in this holiday season! Back in Time Most Alberta towns have suffered disastrous fires during their histories and Black Diamond is no exception. In the early hours of April 24, 1949, a fire broke out mid-block on the south side of Centre Avenue and spread rapidly to neighboring buildings. Strong winds worsened the situation and carried burning boards and debris as far as a kilometer east of town. In the absence of a municipal water system, which was not installed until a decade later, the fire trucks were forced to pump water from the Sheep River to douse the flames. Many of the buildings on the south side of Centre Avenue were destroyed, but greater damage was prevented by the efforts of residents equipped with only pails and wet blankets. Today the Fire Department has a fleet of apparatus, including a ladder truck, pump truck, tender, bush buggy and command truck. They are trained on fire suppression, fire prevention, fire inspections, motor vehicle collision response and extrication, medical first response, and fire education.

Winter Reminders The Public Works and Parks & Recreation Departments would like to remind residents of the Town's policies and procedures for snow removal on roads, sidewalks and pathways. When snowfall accumulates requiring the removal of snow from the roads, please remove your vehicles from the streets until it has been cleared. Please refrain from pushing snow into the road. Policies and procedures can be found on the town website under Government/Bylaws/General policies tab with priority maps attached. What's Up in the Community With winter upon us it is time once again to pull out the shovel and get the sidewalks cleared off. The name for Black Diamond's volunteer Snow Angel program has now been changed to Adopt A Sidewalk to better reflect the connections made between volunteer 'snow angels' and those who have registered to receive assistance. If you would like to help those who need assistance to shovel their snow, please contact FCSS Coordinator Suzan Nagel at SuzanN@town.blackdiamond.ab.ca. Twas the night before Christmas and all through the Town Down to Business: Coolest Storefronts Not a creature was stirring, all the shades were down; The stockings were hung by the gas fireplace with care, In hopes that masked Santa soon would be there; The children were snuggled all warm in their beds, The thoughts of online school no longer in their heads; The businesses in town were all lit for the season, Following the mask guidelines within our region; As I lay in my bed thinking of 2020, A noise heard by my Christmas tree sounded real funny ; I raced to the living room to see what was there, It was Santa with gifts for my family to spare; He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye and said; "It will all be okay, just keep being positive, now get back to bed!" I took his advice, and thought about what he said, Just follow the regulations on Alberta.ca, let's all do what it takes; Merry Christmas to all, stay safe, enjoy your holiday break!
