July 2021 The Carlton Monthly Celebrating the Fourth of July in Memory Care Love Honor Provide by Brooke DeNisco Many holidays are a mixed blessing in memory care communities. Plenty of people with memory loss still remember holidays and enjoy the special events and decorations that go with them. Others can feel over- whelmed and displaced. Social distancing and other safety measures will likely be in place on this July 4, so it is likely to be more “low-key” than usual. Here are some other things to keep in mind for the holiday. Decorations Put up the red, white, and blue streamers and flags no earlier than July 3, and take them down no later than July 5. People with memory loss are often looking to the environment for clues. If they see American flags and red, white, and blue bunting, there is a good chance they’ll recognize it’s the Fourth of July. If it’s actual- ly only July 1, you’ll spend many days explaining that July 4 is in a few days. Correcting people and telling them that what they are observing in their environment is not accurate is easy to avoid by keeping decora- tions brief. Anxiety and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Approximately one in five veterans suffers from PTSD. As more veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars enter old age, the percentage will likely rise. Whether someone has PTSD or not, the loud, gun-like sound of fireworks can be very startling, especially when they are at random intervals. Keep the windows closed and play some music if people in the neighborhood are setting off firecrackers or fireworks. Display images of fireworks or live firework shows on your community television(s). A visual allows people to as- sociate the sounds they hear with a picture of something that is non-threatening and even enjoyable to watch. PBS broadcasts and streams fireworks from several locations. Their website also includes quizzes, trivia, and behind-the-scenes extras from fireworks displays. The Macy’s fireworks in New York City (still taking place this year) are on TV at 8 p.m. EDT (or 5 p.m. PDT) on the Fourth. There are plenty of DVDs featuring fireworks and music and free streaming sources. Routine Don’t ditch all your usual activities because it’s a holiday. Routine is an anchor that will enable people to en- MC joy theTheme of This holiday more. theyear, Month: the Fourth falls on a Saturday. Wash Your Hands 20 SECONDS Protect yourself. Prevent disease! A message rom your local health oicer and the Caliornia Department o Public Health, Division o Communicable Disease Control IMM-825(7/19)
Stop the spread of germs that can make you and others sick! Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Put your used tissue in the waste basket. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow, not your hands. You may be asked to put on a facemask to protect others. Wash hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. CS208322
Summer is in full bloom, and your fruity favorites are ripe and ready to be picked. Especially the most widely popular summer fruit in the United States–the blueberry! July was first introduced as “Blueberry Month” through a joint resolution of the House and Senate on June 13, 1974. The resolution encouraged July is National Blueberry Month then President Nixon to, “issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States … to observe that month with appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Many years later, the United States Department of Agriculture decided that July would officially become National Blueberry Month. The blueberry has a pretty juicy story of how it came to be. Wild blueberries have been around forever, but the blueberries we see in our local supermarkets weren’t cultivated until around 1910. Wild blueberries are not easy to grow and are pretty unpredictable in size and taste, which is why a woman named Elizabeth White wanted to figure out how to change that and make these factors more linear. Elizabeth White, the daughter of cranberry farmers in New Jersey, wanted to expand their business with other crops—particularly the blueberry. Blueberries are usually harvested in July, which falls two months before the cranberry harvest. While she was a college student at Drexel University in Philadelphia, her main interest was in figuring out how to grow the best blueberries. With the help of some friends, White was able to create different strains of the blueberry that could be grown easily, be plentiful, and be the right size every time. Today, the blueberries we know and love at the supermarket are available to grow in 35 different states. Why July? July was chosen as a time to recognize this delicious berry because it is the prime month to harvest the fruit. In 2018, there were more than 45 million licensed drivers aged 65 and older in the United States. That means one and five drivers in the United States are 65 years or older. Driving helps older adults stay mobile and independent but the risk of being injured or killed in a traffic crash increases as people age. In fact, older adults are more than twice as likely to report having a medical problem that makes it difficult to drive, compared with people aged 24-64. Four in five older adults take one or more medicines daily. Also, physical changes that occur with age can change the way the body reacts to medicines, causing more side effects and affecting the ability to concentrate and drive safely. ▪ Always wear your seat belt and never drive impaired by alcohol, drugs, or medicines. ▪ Discuss any medical issues with your doctor to determine if they might affect your driving. ▪ Discuss stopping or changing your medicines with your pharmacist or doctor if you experience any side effects that could interfere with safe driving, such as blurry vision, dizziness, sleepiness, confusion, fatigue, and/or loss of consciousness. ▪ Have your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year. Wear glasses and corrective lenses as directed. ▪ Plan your route before you drive. ▪ Drive during daylight and in good weather when possible. ▪ Consider potential alternatives to driving, such as riding with a friend, using public transit, or using ride share services.
