These preferred lists were compiled by the Border Terrier Club Judges Sub
Committee at a meeting on 7th November 2021.
A1 lists: Indicate persons who have previously been approved by the Kennel Club to award
Challenge Certificates in the breed, have carried out the appointment/s and have the support
of The Border Terrier Club

All Judges
• To have previously been approved by The Kennel Club to award Challenge Certificates to the

A2: For persons who fulfil all the requirements for the A3 list and who have been
assessed in accordance with Kennel Club requirements and accepted by The Kennel
Club for inclusion on an A2 list and have the support of The Border Terrier Club.

the “Grandfathering” system and have the support of the Border Terrier Club.

Indicates persons who the Club would support as being suitable to award CCs in the breed but
not yet approved by the Kennel Club for inclusion on the A2 List
CRITERIA:-
A3 List Specialist Judges
To have the support of the club and have:
• Been active in Border Terriers for a minimum of 10 years.
• A minimum of 7 years experience of judging the breed.
• Judged at least 1 Breed Club Show and/or 2 Breed Club Supported Entry Shows at each of which
at least 40 Border Terriers were entered and present.
• Judged at least the number of Border Terriers in breed classes as currently required by the
Kennel Club for the Stud Book Band allocated to the breed (Band D - 180 dogs as at 1 January
2021) over an adequate geographic spread of venues• To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer, and passed the relevant
examination on the Kennel Club Regulations and Judging Procedures. (K.C. Policy as of
1.7.2001)
• To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer on Conformation and
Movement. (K.C. Policy as of 1.7.2001)
• To have attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer and passed the “Hands
on” assessment of judges’ knowledge of Conformation and Movement, covering Points of the
Dog, The Structure of the Dog and The Conventional Measurements of the Dog. (K.C. Policy
as of 1.1.2007 for A3 Breed Specialists lists)
• To have attended at least two breed specific seminars run in accordance with the relevant Kennel
Club Code of Best Practice and the applicant passed an examination and/or assessment where
applicable - K.C. Policy as of 1.7.2001)
• Submitted an application/questionnaire if requested to do so.
• Undertaken to write show critiques as customarily requested by the weekly dog press.
• Been an owner or breeder of at least 3 Border Terriers when these dogs obtained their first entry
in The Kennel Club Stud Book. (Save in exceptional circumstances)
• Stewarded over a minimum of 12 days at Limited, Open or Championship shows.
• In the case of overseas judges, broadly similar criteria will apply.
A3 List Non-Specialist Judges. To have the support of the club and have:
• A minimum of five years experience of judging the breed.
• Judged at least one Breed Club Show and/or 2 Breed Club Supported Entry Shows at each of
which at least forty Border Terriers were entered and present.
• Judged at least the number of Border Terriers in breed classes as currently required by the
Kennel Club for the Stud Book Band allocated to the breed (180 dogs as at 1 January 2021)
over an adequate geographic spread of venues.
• Attended at least one Border Terrier Breed Specific Seminar run in accordance with the relevant
Kennel Club Code of Best Practice
• Passed a Border Terrier breed examination or assessment if applicable
• Submitted an application/questionnaire if requested to do so.
• Undertaken to write show critiques as customarily requested by the weekly dog press.
• Been an owner or breeder of at least three dogs of any breed when these dogs obtained their first

Open Shows or at Championship Shows without CCs and have completed the Club’s
questionnaire.
CRITERIA:-
B List Specialist Judges
To have the support of the club and have:
• Been active in Border Terriers for a minimum of 5 years
• A minimum of 2 years experience of judging the breed.• Judged at least 30 Border Terriers in breed classes.
• Attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer, and passed the relevant
examination on the Kennel Club Regulations and Judging Procedures: Requirements of a dog
show judge (applicable to all B List Breed Specialists applicants from 1 January 2013) – item
3.1 on the Border Terrier Club Judges Questionnaire
• Attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer on Anatomy, Conformation and
Movement (applicable to all B List Breed Specialists applicants from 1 January 2013) - item 3.2
on the Border Terrier Club Judges Questionnaire
• Attended a seminar given by a Kennel Club Accredited Trainer and passed the “Hands on”
assessment of judges’ knowledge of Conformation and Movement, covering Points of the Dog,

Persons included on the C List are aspirant judges who do not fall into any of the previous
categories and who have completed the Club’s questionnaire
CRITERIA:-
Specialist Judges
To have the support of the club and have:
• Been active in Border Terriers for at least 3 years.
• Submitted an application/questionnaire if requested to do so.
• Undertaken to write show critiques as customarily requested by the weekly dog press.
• PLUS Level 1 criteria of Judges Education Programme (Breed Shows) from 1 January 2021
Non-Specialist Judges
To have the support of the club and have:
• A minimum of 3 years experience of judging any other breed.
• Been placed and currently remain on the A, B or C List of a breed club for at least 1 other
breed.
• Judged at least 12 Border Terriers in breed classes.
• Submitted an application/questionnaire if requested to do so.

Please note:
Neither the Secretary, nor any member of the Committee can enter into
discussion concerning a particular applicant’s inclusion or non-inclusion on
these preferred lists.
The submission of a completed questionnaire will allow the Border Terrier
Club’s Judges Sub-Committee to consider the candidate for inclusion on the
Judges Lists, but does not guarantee or imply inclusion to any of the Club’s
Judges Lists, whose stated criteria the candidate may satisfy.
* Marked against any name on any list, denotes that, at the time of going to press,
the person has been listed in the Kennel Club Journal as awarding CCs for the 1st
time in 2022.
** Marked against any name on any list, denotes that, at the time of going to press,
the person has been listed in the Kennel Club Journal as awarding CCs for the 1st
time in 2023.
*** Judges on the C List marked thus have the approval of the Border Terrier Club
Judges Sub Committee but may not yet have complied with all of the revised full
requirements of the KC Judges Education Programme (Breed Shows) for first time
judges from 1st January 2021, which are:
- Minimum of 5 years proven interest in pedigree dogs
- Attend a Requirements of a Dog Show Judge seminar (but not mandatory to take
and pass the examination)
- Attend a Conformation and Movement Seminar
- Complete a minimum of 2 stewarding appointments
*** Judges so listed on our C list are requested to advise the Secretary once they
have complied with all the above requirements and the 3 asterisks will then be
removed.
Overseas judges:
At the Joint meeting of all 7 UK Border Terrier Clubs on 6 May 2012, it was agreed
that the following wording would be added to the base of the A3
Breed Specialists and B Breed Specialists lists: “In the case of overseas judges,broadly similar criteria will apply.” Notes from 2015: A3 list criteria re number of dogs judged: 2015 A3 list for Breed Specialists: judged at least 250 Border Terriers in breed classes over an adequate geographic spread of venues, while A3 list for Non-Breed Specialists: judged at least 200 Border Terriers in breed classes over an adequate geographic spread of venues. 2016 to and including 2020 A 3 lists (both Breed Specialists and Non-Breed Specialists): judged at least the number of Border Terriers in breed classes as currently required by the Kennel Club for the Stud Book Band allocated to the breed (Band D – 160 dogs at 2015). 2021 A3 lists: Number amended to 180 “Hands On” Judging Experience by the KC, in line with the Independent Review Panel of the Judges Education Programme (Breed Clubs). Judges selection: Observed judging appointments under KC’s JEP (BSs): Attendees at the Joint Border Terrier Clubs' meeting on 6 May 2018 agreed that before anyone was put forward to judge at either a club show or a club supported entry show, they must have first judged at least fifty Border Terriers. The number is at present under review. ‘Observations’ can only take place at either 1. a breed club show, 2. a supported entry show or in 3. non-cc classes at a championship show (which for our breed is only Belfast). KC instructions regarding Judging Invitations: extract from KC Press Office Announcement 24th February 2020 re judges from 1 January 2021: “Judges may be appointed by societies based on either the current judge regulations or the new system until the end of the transition period in five years’ time, i.e. judges must either be on the breed club required list and/or at the required JCF Level. From 1 January 2021, no one can judge unless they meet the new Level 1 requirements. Otherwise, judges can accept appointments either in accordance with current Kennel Club regulations (i.e. completely outside the requirements of the JCF) or with the Judges Competency Framework requirements. In both cases, an exception can be made where a valid contract is in place prior to the date of this announcement (24 February 2020).” Note: for JCF read now Judges Education Programme (Breed Clubs).
