APRIL 2022 THE BOBCAT BULLETIN Monthly newsletter of Southern Bluffs Elementary Spring - Savor the Moments The advent of the spring season always ignites a renewal of excitement, energy and celebration as we enter our last quarter of the school year. If you are one who likes to “countdown” toward a special date, say the last day of school, allow me to provide you with a list of “happenings” that will help you to understand why I am not one to count days but savor the moments: During spring we will: Perform vocal music concerts at Central High School Have the annual strings concert in the Southern Bluffs’ gym after a two-year hiatus View student artwork at the South Branch Library as part of Youth Art Month Demonstrate what we know on the Wisconsin Forward Exam and the iReady assessment Step away for a little rest and relaxation during Spring Break Take our learning on the road as various grades hop on a bus to check out: a fish hatchery, the blue bridges, the Hmong Cultural Center, Central’s planetarium, sail aboard the La Crosse Queen, visit the library and Villa Louis in PDC Our 5th graders will celebrate their graduation from D.A.R.E Hold our second Career, Community, Connection Family Night Recognize the end of 5th grade with a bowling trip Engage in PE Fun Day And last, but not least, gather together to celebrate the last day of school on June 3rd In and among all of the above items, we will continue to learn and grow academically, socially and emotionally. Can you see how a countdown just doesn’t make sense? What I know for sure is that between today and June 3rd there is so much to do and so little time to do it. Time with children goes by too quickly, so savor each moment and leave the countdown for New Year’s Eve. Happy Spring! Mrs. Schreiner

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. It is a great time for parents and caregivers to have conversations with their children about personal safety, online safety, and the importance that your child(ren) has at least 5 trusted adults they feel they can talk to about anything from the little problems that come up to bigger issues that are often uncomfortable to talk about.. As parents and caregivers, it is a hard thing to think about our children being victims of abuse, yet research shares some very alarming statistics. As adults sometimes we are unsure and we ask ourselves when is the right time for these conversations? What is the right age and how should I bring it up? What do I say? The Committee for Children sponsors The Hot Chocolate Talk® campaign. This campaign empowers families to use everyday moments to speak with kids about preventing sexual abuse. Anytime is the right time--it is never too early nor it is ever too late to talk with your child. You can start today. So, grab a cup of hot chocolate and check out some of the resources below: How to Talk with Kids About Personal Safety and Sexual Abuse: A Conversation Guide for Parents and Caregivers Two minute video : How to Talk With Kids about Personal Safety What to Say at Every Age : Guides from Toddler to Teens www.safekids.org Safe Kids Worldwide® is a nonprofit organization working to help families and communities keep kids safe from injuries. www.kidpower.org Kidpower is the global nonprofit leader in personal safety education for all ages, teaching skills for strong relationships and the prevention of harm. In April & May, as part of classroom guidance time Southern Bluffs students will be having lessons about safety. Younger grades K-3rd will have two lessons and older grades 4th-5th will have one safety lesson. I will send home letters to families the day of the lessons so you can have follow-up conversations if you wish. If you have any questions about the upcoming safety lessons or if I can be a resource for you, please reach out by phone or email. Thank you. Be well and take good care, Becky Lueck, School Counselor (608) 789-7020 blueck@lacrossesd.org
Congrats to Nathan A. for winning this year's Child Abuse Prevention Art Contest. There were over 171 entries this year from 12 different area schools. 2nd place also went to Southern Bluffs student Jayden L. Both students won gift cards to a store of their choice and they were invited to a special breakfast with the La Crosse Mayor in April for Child Abuse Prevention Month. Nathan's art work will be printed on t-shirts and other promotional materials including a billboard sign on the south side of town. We can be proud of Nathan and Jayden and all Southern Bluffs students who participated--we had about 30 students participate and 10 S. Bluffs students make it to the top 20 designs! Congratulations to our two Battle of the Books teams that competed at UW-L in March. Great job!! Anna, Abby & Ellie - 5th Gr. Sydney, Clara & Sophia - 4th Gr.
Pokemon Cards etc. Pokemon Cards/trading have become an issue at school. Please make sure that Pokemon cards stay at home and don't come with your student to school. Please read below for our policy per the Parent Handbook: PERSONAL ITEMS, TOYS AND GAMES Toys, trading cards, skateboards, roller blades, video games, and playground equipment are among the items that should not be brought to school. These items easily become a distraction, safety concern, and a target for theft and/or misuse. The staff may confiscate any item that is threatening or disruptive to the school setting. Most confiscated items will be returned only to a parent/guardian. Items may be brought to school for sharing activities with the consent of the teacher. If your student will be missing THREE or more days of school due to vacation, scheduled surgery, etc., an Excused Absence Request Form should be filled out and returned to the office for principal approval. You can also find a copy of this form on the school website under School Documents.
