The ATHENA Project – Accelerator Technology HElmholtz iNfrAstructure Proposal for Helmholtz Strategic Investment Project Project Outline on Slides
Particle Accelerators in Helmholtz The centers in the Helmholtz association design, build and operate the large and modern particle accelerators in Germany. Tens of thousands of users rely in their work on the outstanding and internationally leading quality of the generated particle beams, the emitted light and radiation. The Helmholtz centers pursue strategic accelerator research and development (ARD). New ideas are studied, translated into technically innovative facilities and being made accessible to users from many fields of science, engineering, medicine and industry. The superconducting RF accelerator technology is a prime example of the success and the importance of such strategic investments for German science. Our goal: A new generation of very compact, cost- effective accelerators for present and new users! SEITE 2

Plasma Accelerators as Future Technology • Successful accelerator technologies approach physical and practical limits à advances slow down. • Plasma accelerators produce the same energy gain as conventional accelerators in 1/1000 of acceleration length. • The required high power lasers become more and more compact. Rapid laser development and progress! • Potential for ultra-compact accelerators of electrons, protons and ions! Potential for reduced cost. • Challenge: Usability – Stability – Quality. Helmholtz centers have decades of experience on these challenges! SEITE 4
