Why is staff testing so important? • Identifies asymptomatic staff who currently have Covid-19 so they are able to self- isolate if their result is positive. • Protects those receiving care from infection passed to them by staff who are confirmed positive. It also protects the individual, their families and the wider public. • Prevents and controls the spread of the virus by identifying asymptomatic cases . • It is an additional layer of protection – and should not prevent or mitigate the use of PPE or infection prevention and control. • Testing does not change with the roll out of the vaccine – the vaccine does not interfere with the covid test and even when staff receive their first and second dose they must continue to take part in testing.

Staff testing - kits and dates 2 Kits are expected to be delivered by Brakes or Bidfood (depending on existing contracts). A delivery schedule will be provided to settings. If your setting is closed at the time of delivery, please ensure that someone is exceptionally onsite to receive delivery, to avoid delays to test kits being delivered. On arrival, please record the lot number(s) of the test kits delivered. Please contact the new NHS National Services Scotland, Scottish telephone helpline service 0800 008 6587 if there are any issues Delivery parcel size ∙ Tests will initially come in boxes of 7 tests for staff (each large carton containing 54 boxes of 7). ∙ The picture shows an outer case and an example of an LFD 7’s test kit ∙ NB: In addition to a box of test kits there will be a bundle of updated Instructions for Use that must be given out with each kit (version 1.3.2) ∙ There will be a sufficient number of kits for two months of testing. You can initially provide 1 box of 7 testing kits to each member of staff so that they can test twice a week. 5
Setting up a collection point The collection point does not need any extra infrastructure. However, it must: • Be able to be secured to prevent unauthorised access to the test kits • Not be outside. The test kits need to be stored in temperatures between 2 and 30 degrees. • Allow enough space for social distancing when handling or distributing test kits, etc. The member of staff coordinating the handing out of the test kits should wear an appropriate face covering at all times and maintain 2m from staff coming to collect their test kits. Each setting participating in self-testing should undertake a risk assessment prior to starting testing and continue to maintain this on their risk register. This should cover risks associated with testing, non-reporting, poor uptake, communication etc. 6
Test kit log When issuing the kits to staff, the issuer must record who takes the test kits. This is the Test Kit Log and must include: • Name of setting • Name of person issuing the test • Date of issue • Lot number of test kit • Confirm receipt of new Instructions For Use (IFU) • Name of person using the test While not a regulatory requirement, the Scottish Government also recommends the inclusion of the following field to help reinforce the importance of regular testing and reporting, and to identify any difficulties in using test kits: The Log should be kept for 12 months from the date of the last entries made by the •Number of previous tests issued that have been completed setting. The UK Department of Health and successfully, (ii) number that were void, and (iii) have all results Social Care may from time to time request been reported to the NHS via the digital portal? that you share this log (or extracts from it) to assist in monitoring and responding to issues with test kits. 7
What is the LFD test? - 1 A Lateral Flow Device Test (LFD) is a form of rapid testing to identify Covid-19 in individuals. • The LFD detects a COVID-19 antigen, that is produced when a person is already infected. As agreed with the Medical Regulator for social care it must be throat and nasal swab. • Effective for detecting infectiousness in asymptomatic individuals. • LFDs do not rely on labs for testing and offer faster testing for staff (30 mins) • Upon testing positive staff member must inform employer immediately, isolate and book a confirmatory PCR test. • Once someone has had a positive PCR test there is no need to resume testing (assuming they remain symptom free) for 90 days as fragments of the virus are likely to remain. If they do develop symptoms again then they should book PCR test. 8
What is the LFD test?- 2 A Lateral Flow Device Test (LFD) is a form of rapid testing to identify Covid-19 in individuals. • Before carrying out their first lateral flow test staff must read the training material/Instructions for Use and watch the video. • Guidance document: You should read the guidance that is available on the Objective Connect document sharing platform. You will soon receive an invitation to join this. • https://secure.objectiveconnect.co.uk/login • Video: Step by step guide to COVID-19 self-testing – YouTube • Unlike other testing pathways, a supervised first test is not required for this form of LFD testing. 9
Logging results (lateral flow) 1 • We are starting to see data flow/reporting for Lateral flow. • Partially complete in many cases which severely limits the usefulness for us nationally but also for reporting locally. • Lateral flow • Results (negative, positive, void) should be logged at www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result.
