The Chester Beatty
Welcoming over 350,000 visitors each year, the Chester Beatty (CB) contains a world-famous
collection of manuscripts, prints, miniature paintings, early printed books and objets d’art
from countries across Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. The Collection is
principally focused on the written word and its associated painted and printed images.
One of Ireland’s national cultural institutions, the CB is a public charitable trust established
under the will of the late Sir Alfred Chester Beatty and is governed by a Board of Trustees.
The Western treasures of the CB include some of the earliest sources on papyrus for the bible
and a great library of Manichean texts; Armenian and European manuscripts from medieval,
Renaissance and modern times; prints, early and fine books and bindings complete a
remarkable conspectus of the arts of manuscript production and printing from many cultures
and periods.
Chinese and Japanese painted scrolls and albums, woodblock prints, printed books and
decorative arts are among the most important part of the CB’s East Asian holdings. The Asian
collections also contain material from India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Mongolia, Thailand,
Burma (Myanmar) and Indonesia.
The Islamic Collections comprise mainly manuscripts and single-page paintings and
calligraphies. This includes more than 260 complete and fragmentary Qur’ans, some dating
from the late eighth and ninth centuries and including the work of the leading calligraphers
of the Islamic world.

Summary Job Purpose
The post of Visitor Services Officer is a position requiring the highest standards of
responsibility, integrity, courtesy and behaviour. Visitor Services Officers are responsible for
providing a visible security presence, and invigilating within the galleries and public spaces of
the Chester Beatty. Additionally, Visitor Services Officers act as brand ambassadors for the
Chester Beatty, proactively assisting visitors and contributing to a positive visitor experience.
S/he will report to the Visitor Services Supervisor/Senior Visitor Services Officer(s) who will
supervise and evaluate the performance of the successful candidate.

The Chester Beatty is a collaborative organisation and the global nature of the collections are
reflected in our multicultural and intercultural programming. The successful candidate will be
an energetic individual with a passion for the arts and excellent interpersonal skills. They will
form part of a small but dynamic team with the flexibility to adapt to the CB’s constantly
changing environment. In the course of their work, they will also liaise closely with the
Facilities & Security Manager.

Key responsibilities:

   •   Provide front of house security and visitor services within the galleries, reception
       desk, security control room and any other areas as required.
   •   Proactively provide information and excellent customer service to all visitors, in
       accordance with the Chester Beatty Customer Service and Action Plan.
   •   Monitor and report to the Senior Visitor Services Officer(s)/Visitor Services
       Supervisor on incidents relating to security, fire, health & safety.
   •   Carry out all duties as delegated within the Emergency Response Plan.
   •   Assist with weekly fire and safety checks throughout the building.
   •   Act as a first aider where required.
   •   Act as a fire marshal/evacuation warden when required.
   •   Conduct security patrols where required – both within the buildings and the
       immediate building perimeter.
   •   Hold keys from time-to-time while on duty and assist with access requests from
       staff, visitors and contractors.
   •   Assist with the visitor and contractor management processes and monitoring for
       compliance / challenging non-compliance.
   •   Monitor the buildings for standards of cleanliness, reporting any concerns to the
       Senior Visitor Services Officer(s)/Visitor Services Supervisor.
   •   Carry out light cleaning duties within the galleries.
   •   Carry out light maintenance tasks within the galleries.
   •   Assist in the setting up of equipment, including audio visual equipment, for events
       and functions within the buildings.
   •   Carry out postal duties including franking mail and delivery of both internal mail
       within the buildings and outgoing external mail to the post office or drop-off point.
   •   Ensure floor plans, education and other information material is available at reception
       and easily accessible to visitors.
   •   Assist in the mounting and movement of materials to support the exhibitions and
       conservation teams.
   •   Support the introduction of any new technologies appropriate to the role.
   •   Commit to personal development and be willing to undertake training and acquire
       new skills.
   •   Attend and participate in all mandatory training courses as deemed applicable by
       management.
   •   Comply fully with the requirements as listed under the Visitor Services Duties &
       Responsibilities document.

•     Carry out additional reasonably requested duties from time-to-time as requested by
         the Senior Visitor Services Officer(s), Visitor Services Supervisor, Facilities & Security
         Manager or Head of Operations & Administration.

Essential qualifications and abilities:

Required

   •     Eligible to work in Ireland.
   •     A minimum of two year’s previous experience in either a customer-facing security or
         customer service role.
   •     A demonstrated ability to work on own initiative whilst being part of a larger team.
   •     A proven ability to remain calm and professional whilst working under pressure.
   •     A demonstrated ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations.
   •     Energy, enthusiasm and willingness to provide a positive visitor experience.
   •     The ability to effectively communicate verbally and produce written reports in
         English.

Desirable

   •     Relevant educational background in security.
   •     Previous work experience in using security, safety and fire equipment.
   •     Previous work experience in a museum, arts or cultural environment.
   •     A strong interest in culture and the arts.
   •     An ability to speak a second language, particularly Irish.

Salary/Pension:

A fixed-term contract salary applies of €24,104 per annum, pro-rata for 5 months. The
successful candidate will also be required to join the Single Public Service Pension Scheme.

Roster

The weekly hours of work are 37 hours net per week, based on an average over a three-week
work cycle. The current roster requires staff to work two periods of 7 consecutive days,
including weekends and two scheduled shifts until 8.30pm within a three-week cycle. This
may be subject to change due to operational requirements or changes in public sector policy.
Additional hours may be required from time-to-time to support the events programme or
essential maintenance works.

Uniform
Visitor Services Officers are required to wear the officially supplied uniform.

Annual Leave
The annual leave allowance will be 9.5 working days for the duration of this contract,
subject to the usual conditions regarding the granting of annual leave, and is exclusive of the
usual public holidays.

Conditions
The post will be subject to satisfactory Garda clearance, a medical check and a probationary
period.
