TEACH THEM YOUNG
In the spirit of Mission Sunday, Fr. Kelechi offers the following story of missionaries in the
home:
Last year December 2020 during my vacation in Nigeria, I was surprised yet delighted
when I entered the church sacristy in Our Lady of Fatima Parish for the 6:00 a.m. mass and
noticed a little boy of about 5 years in an altar servers robe standing near the sacristy door,
patiently waiting for the priest so that he could join the procession for mass. Immediately, I
became his biggest fan.
I felt deeply moved as I observed him alert and ready for mass in the early hours of
the morning when most children his age were still sleeping comfortably in their houses.
I watched him when the procession for the mass began. He was so angelic, with his
palms folded in supplication and his face so
serious. He was the center of attraction. When the
homily was going on, I observed that he has dozed
off in his seat at the altar. I smiled. He is only but
a child. When I approached him after mass, his
mummy said that he was so interested in religious
things and that prompted her to encourage him by
bringing him along to church always. What do you
think she was teaching him?
Seeing him reminded me of another family
I saw when mass was going on. The woman
brought out her phone and gave it to her son who
started playing a game when the mass was still on.
He was so engrossed with playing the game that
he never followed what was happening in the
church. At a point, the woman took the phone
from him, brought out biscuit and gave it to the
boy who quickly devoured it and continued playing his game. The boy should be around
6 years old. What do you think she was teaching him?
When the mini bazaar launching began after the post communion prayer, I noticed
a man who counted about 50,000 Naira, approximat ely $100.00 and gave to his 5 year old
son who proudly went to the altar, knelt before the priest who prayed for him and he later
deposited the money into the offertory box and proudly returned to his dad. His
confidence made me conclude it was not his first time of doing that. What do you think
his father was teaching him?
The bible says in Proverbs 22:6 "train a child in the way he should go and when he
is old, he will not depart from it." We have responsibility to the young ones especially at
home. The child first learns at home and from his parents. Teach them young. Fill their minds
with what ought to be. They will never remain young forever. One day you will wake up and realize
that they have all grown up and gone. What impact did you make in their lives?
Can your child sing well? Develop and guide his talent from that young age? Can your
child draw? Have you discovered a peculiar behavior in your child at such a young age?
Develop and guide him. Expose him to the environment that will boost his talent and carefully
monitor his progress. All knowledge is not obtained from the classroom. Teach them outside
the classroom. Befriend your child. It is not enough in just being a parent. Make out time for
them or you will one day realize that you have become a stranger to your children.
You get my point? Teach them young.
RESPECT FOR LIFE MONTH: BUILDING A CULTURE OF LIFE
Like parishioners in other parishes, quite a few people in our parish are frustrated and alarmed by a
growing degradation of human dignity and human life in society. There is a desire to do something,
to fight the good fight. So people pay particular attention to candidates’ positions on life issues, join
groups like our pro-life group, and contacted elected officials on pro-life issues. And when these
efforts fail to change society? "We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum
of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son (Pope John Paul II at
the 2002 World Youth Day, Downsview Park in Toronto, Canada, on July 28, 2002)."
The Father’s love is supposed to
define Catholics but “we often measure
ourselves by false standards: by what and
how much we do, our successes or
failures, how others treat us, the degree of
our pleasure or independence, etc.

Once we realize the futility of
these measures, we are ready for
something more even if it might seem a
too indirect for the challenges of the day. “The knowledge and realization of how deeply we are
loved by God elicits a response of love that simultaneously draws us closer to God and, at the same
time, impels us to share his love with others (www.respectlife.org/culture-of-life)." Sharing
something of God’s love becomes the goal and there is less room for the machinations of anger and
resentment. “A Christian life lived with charity and faith is the most effective form of evangelization
(www.respectlife.org/culture-of-life)." The shock of such a life catches others by surprise. They
understand that the same old sense of confrontation and counter-confrontation has been replaced.
“When someone is facing great trials, we need to meet them where they are, walk with them
on their journey, intercede for them, and be open to sharing Christ's love however he directs. When
a woman becomes pregnant, and her boyfriend threatens to leave if she continues the pregnancy, we
need to lovingly walk with her. When family members or friends become seriously ill, we need to
assure them that God still offers them something in this life, and they still have purpose. We need to
consistently be with them every step of the way. Sometimes our actions speak for themselves; other
times, words are needed. Whatever the situation, Jesus knows how to speak to each person's heart;
we simply need to follow where he leads (www.respectlife.org/culture-of-life)."
“This is how we build a culture of life, a culture that joyfully proclaims the truth of God's
love, purpose, and plan for each person. Changing the culture is a process of conversion that begins
in our own hearts and includes a willingness to be instructed and a desire to be close to Jesus—the
source of joy and love (www.respectlife.org/culture-of-life)."THE BISHOP COMES THIS WEEKEND
This weekend the bishop will celebrate Masses here in St. George and in the missions. His visit
coincides with the visit of representatives of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
This group works to preserve the Christian presence in the Holy Land. Today Christians make up
less than 2% of the population of the Holy Land and the Order provides material, moral, and spiritual
assistance to support not only Christians but also the poor and oppressed.
Some members of the Order live in St. George and this weekend will be an opportunity to
reconnect with the local Order. It’s also a time to introduce the Order to more people and set the
stage for future growth in this part of the diocese. Please welcome the members of the Order.
The bishop will be return in the first full week of November to help promote the Catholic
Foundation of Utah (manager of endowments) and our Washington Fields project.
A LITTLE SOMETHING TO JOG THE MEMORY
The Sunday readings are not just for Sundays, but for the whole week that follows. Often a detail
about these readings opens the door to more details and in turn some of these details help illuminate
part of the day. Either way, recalling the readings is the starting point. The weekly quizzes help with

GOLF WITH THE BISHOP
Circle November 8 on your calendars. The bishop will be in town and he will be free to golf with
nine other parishioners at the Ledges Golf Club at 10:00 a.m. At 7:00 p.m. he will be the guest of
honor at a dinner in Kuzy Hall to explain his vision for the Church in Southern Utah and for the Utah
Catholic Foundation, the organization managing endowments for the diocese.
Raffle tickets to golf with the bishop are available after weekend Masses. Each ticket will be
$50 (not including green fees) and nine parishioners will be selected to play six holes with the bishop.
Proceeds will benefit the Washington Fields project and the nine winners will be selected November
1.

Confessions in the Scanlan Building on Saturdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Appointments for
confessions are also encouraged and they can be made by calling the office.
Our liturgical streaming schedule continues with daily Masses Monday through Friday
streamed live on Facebook at 8:00 a.m. (English) and 7:00 p.m. (Spanish). After live
streaming these Masses remain on Facebook as do the Sunday Masses which are streamed

ENSENELES JOVENES
En el espíritu del Domingo de Misión, el P. Kelechi ofrece la siguiente historia de misioneros en el
hogar:
El año pasado, diciembre de 2020, durante mis vacaciones, me sorprendió pero me
encanto cuando entre a la sacristía de la iglesia en la parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima
in Nigeria para la misa de las 6 am y note a un niño de unos 5 años con una túnica de
monaguillo, parado cerca de la puerta de la sacristía, esperando pacientemente al sacerdote
para que se uniera a la procesión de la misa. Inmediatamente, gano' mi admiración.
Me sentí profundamente conmovido al observarlo alerta y listo para la misa en esas
primeras horas de la mañana cuando la mayoría de
sus compañeros de edad todavía dormían
cómodamente en sus casas.
Lo mire cuidadosamente cuando comenzó la
procesión para la misa. Era tan angélico, con sus
manos dobladas en suplica y su rostro tan serio. Él
era el centro de atracción. Durante la homilía,
observe que se había quedado dormido en su
asiento en el altar. Sonreí porque es más que un
niño. Cuando me acerque a él después de la misa,
su mama dijo que estaba muy interesado en las
cosas religiosas y eso la impulso para llevarlo siempre
a la iglesia. ¿Qué crees que le estaba enseñando?
Verlo me recuerdo otra familia que vi
cuando estaba celebrando la misa. La mujer sacó
su teléfono y se lo dio a su hijo, quien comenzó a
jugar con el teléfono cuando todavía estábamos en
la celebración de la santa misa. En un momento, la mujer le quit ó el teléfono, saco una
galleta y se la dio al niño, quien rápidamente la devoro y siguió jugando. Fue un niño de 6
arios. ¿Qué crees que le estaba ensenando?
Cuando comenzó el lanzamiento del "mini bazar" después de la oración posterior a
la comunión, note a un hombre que conto como 50,000 naira, aproximadamente $100.00
y le dio a su hijo de 5 años que orgullosamente fue al altar, se arrodillo ante el sacerdote
para orar por él, luego se depositó el dinero en la caja del ofertorio y se regresó con orgullo
a su padre. Su confianza me hizo concluir que no era la primera vez que hada eso. ¿Qué
crees que le estaba enseriando su padre?
La Biblia dice en Proverbios 22:6 "instruye al niño en el camino que debe seguir y
cuando sea viejo, no se apartara de él". Tenemos responsabilidad con los jóvenes
especialmente en casa. El niño aprende primero en la casa de sus padres. Enséneles jóvenes.
Llena sus mentes con lo que debería ser. Nunca permanecerán jóvenes para siempre. Un día
te despertaras y te darás cuenta de que todos han crecido y se han ido. ¿Qué impacto hiciste
en sus vidas?¿Tu hijo puede cantar bien? ¿Desarrollar y orientar su talento desde tan joven? ¿Puede su
hijo dibujar? ¿Ha descubierto un comportamiento peculiar en su hijo a una edad tan temprana?
Desarrollarlo y guiarlo. Expóngalo al entorno que potenciara su talento y supervise
atentamente su progreso. No todos los conocimientos se obtienen de la clase. Ensé neles
fuera de la clase. Hazlo su buen amigo. No basta solo para ser los papas. Tómese un tiempo
para ellos o algún día se dará cuenta de que se ha convertido en un extraño para sus hijos.
¿Entiendes mi punto? Enséneles jóvenes.
MES DEL RESPETO A LA VIDA: CONSTRUYENDO UNA
CULTURA DE VIDA
Como los feligreses en otras parroquias, muchas personas en nuestra parroquia están frustradas y
alarmadas por una creciente degradación de la dignidad humana y la vida humana en la sociedad.
Hay un deseo de hacer algo, de pelear la buena batalla. Por esta razón, la gente presta especial
atención especial a las posiciones de los candidatos en temas de vida, se une a grupos como nuestro
grupo pro-vida y se puso en contacto con los funcionarios electos en temas de pro-vida. ¿Y cuando
estos esfuerzos no logran cambiar la sociedad? “Nosotros no somos la suma de nuestras debilidades
y nuestros fracasos; al contrario, somos la suma del amor del Padre a nosotros y de nuestra capacidad
real de llegar a ser imagen de su Hijo (Juan Pablo II, Jornada Mundial de la Juventud 2002 en el
parque Downsview en Toronto, Canada
en 28 de Julio 2002)".
Se supone que el amor del Padre
define a los católicos, pero “nos medimos
según falsos estándares: por qué y cuánto
hacemos, nuestros éxitos o fracasos,
cómo nos tratan los demás, el grado de
nuestro placer o independencia, etc.

Una vez que nos demos cuenta
de la inutilidad de estas medidas, estamos
dispuestos a algo más a pesar de que podría parecer demasiado indirecto para los desafíos del día.
“El tomar conciencia de cuán profundamente somos amados por Dios suscita una respuesta de amor
que nos acerca a Dios y, al mismo tiempo, nos impulsa a compartir su amor con los demás
(www.respectlife.org/culture-of-life)”. Compartir el amor de Dios se convierte en la meta y hay
menos espacio para las maquinaciones de la ira y el resentimiento. “Una vida cristiana vivida con
caridad y fe es la forma más eficaz de evangelización (www.respectlife.org/culture-of-life)". El
shock de una vida así sorprende a los demás. Entienden que el mismo sentido viejo de confrontación
y contra-confrontación ha sido reemplazado.
“Cuando una persona está enfrentando grandes pruebas, tenemos que acercarnos,
acompañarla en su camino, interceder por ella, y estar abiertos a compartir el amor de Cristo como él
lo indique. Cuando una mujer queda embarazada, y su novio amenaza con irse si continúa con el
embarazo, debemos caminar amorosamente con ella. Cuando familiares o amigos se enferman
gravemente, debemos asegurarles que Dios sigue ofreciéndoles algo en esta vida, y que ellos siguen
teniendo un propósito. Debemos estar constantemente con ellos en cada paso del camino. A vecesnuestras acciones hablan por sí mismas; otras veces, las palabras son necesarias. Pero Jesús siempre
sabe hablar al corazón de cada uno; basta con ir por donde él nos conduce

“Así es como respondemos a nuestro llamado misionero de construir la cultura de la vida que
proclama con alegría la verdad del amor, propósito y plan de Dios para cada persona. Cambiar la
cultura es un proceso de conversión que comienza en nuestro propio corazón e incluye la voluntad
de ser instruidos y el deseo de estar cerca de Jesús, la fuente de la alegría y el amor

EL OBISPO VIENE ESTE FIN DE SEMANA
Este fin de semana el obispo celebrará misas aquí en San Jorge y en las misiones. Su visita coincide
con la visita de representantes de la Orden Ecuestre del Santo Sepulcro de Jerusalén. Este grupo
trabaja para preservar la presencia cristiana en Tierra Santa. Hoy los cristianos constituyen menos del
2% de la población de Tierra Santa y la Orden proporciona asistencia material, moral y espiritual para
apoyar no sólo a los cristianos, sino también a los pobres y oprimidos.
Algunos miembros de la Orden viven en St. George y este fin de semana será una oportunidad
para reencontrarse con la Orden local. También es tiempo de presentar la Orden a más personas y de
establecer el escenario para el crecimiento futuro en esta parte de la diócesis. Por favor, dé la
bienvenida a los miembros de la Orden.
El obispo regresará en la primera semana completa de noviembre para ayudar a promover la
Fundación Católica de Utah (gerente de dotaciones) y nuestro proyecto de Washington Fields.
UN POCO DE ALGO PARA AFECTAR LA MEMORIA
Las lecturas Dominicales no son solo para los domingos, sino para toda la semana siguiente. A

GOLF CON EL OBISPO
El 8 de noviembre es una fecha importante. El obispo estará aquí y jugará al golf con otros nueve
