4 TCM Chairman's Message Dear Members, Welcome back to The Club for 2019. On behalf of the Main Committee, I would like to wish all our Members a Happy and Prosperous New Year. 2018 was another relatively difficult year for The Club, with our total membership numbers still down, although there have been positive signs recently of increased numbers joining, helped, we believe, by our more flexible payment options and boosted by our ‘Refer a Friend’ promotion, etc. We have also been pleased by the high annual renewal levels this year, reflecting not just the fact we have maintained the cost of annual subscriptions for the 4th year running, but also, we believe, the unbeatable value for money The Club continues to offer when compared with the competition in town (what competition???). In order to maintain this competitive edge, we have just reduced the prices for all standard drinks throughout The Club (applicable at all times so no waiting for any “Happy Hours”) and we are committed to maintaining these prices throughout 2019 (subject to any new regulations introduced by the Authorities). We will also be continuing throughout 2019 to introduce further F&B promotions throughout all our outlets. Please continue to support such efforts by the Management to vary and spice up the many F&B choices available. Events wise during 2018 staff and management have continued to think up new ideas for providing Members and their Guests with the best variety of entertainment available in Abu Dhabi. Outstanding events throughout 2018 were the Classic Crooners, Evenings with Geoff Boycott and Dame Mary Peters, a Prince Tribute, the Celtic Tenors, The Big Day of Fun with The Christians, various themed Beach Parties, Royal Wedding Street Party, Back to School Welcome Back Party, Life’s a Beach Day, Pink Afternoon Tea, Halloween Family Beach Party, Bonfire Night, Christmas Eve on the Beach, Christmas Day lunches and, last but not least, the New Year’s Eve Gala Ball around the Pool. We were particularly pleased with attendances at the Welcome Back Party (1,000), Bonfire Night (2,700) and Christmas Eve (1,650). On behalf of the Membership, I would like to thank the Club Staff and Management Teams for their extremely hard work in making 2018 such an eventful year. Development wise we have not stood still during 2018 as the Committee feels that it is essential, especially during these quieter periods, to maintain if not enhance the facilities available to our existing, as well as potential new members. During the year, in addition to general maintenance and decoration works, our main project was the complete refurbishment of the Male and Female Changing Rooms in the Health Complex. Looking ahead to 2019 we are considering landscaping the area in front of the Main Reception, currently used for car parking. We are also having studies carried out on ways to make better use of the Sports Bar. In closing I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Management and Staff for all their hard work throughout 2018. I would also like to thank the many Members who have volunteered to support The Club through their involvement on Main Committee, Sub-Committees, Section Committees and in numerous other ways, often unnoticed by the membership at large. A true Member’s Club is a unique establishment that relies upon such volunteers for its continued existence. As we enter 2019, I would remind all Members of the famous words (slightly altered) of President John F. Kennedy in his 1961 Inaugural Speech: “And so my fellow [Club Members], ask not what your [Club] can do for you, ask what you can do for your [Club].” I would request all Members to continue to support their Club so that it might continue to offer them the best facilities, F&B outlets and entertainment in Abu Dhabi. All the best to everyone for 2019. Hamish F. Macdonald Chairman
TCM 5 General Manager's Message Ahlan 2019 Like many businesses and organisations in Abu Dhabi, we welcome 2019 with wide, open arms and happily bid adieu to 2018. That said, while last year was very challenging for most sectors in Abu Dhabi we were very encouraged by the number of new Members who joined The Club in the last quarter of the year, and we are confident that this bodes well for a prosperous, energetic and successful year ahead. With an eye on the coming 12 months we look forward to seeing you to make the most of your Club Membership by making full use of the wide range of facilities and services we provide. As a team we are committed to a year of enhanced service and extreme value across The Club. In analysing Membership usage and trends in 2018 we clearly saw that ‘value’ and ‘quality of service’ matter in equal measure. So with that in mind, rather than this being a few lines only from me I have asked the Management team to co-sign this letter as an indication of our collective commitment to you throughout 2019. In 2018 Committee and Management conducted two questionnaires, the first focused on Food & Beverage and the second on Entertainment. In responding to both surveys many Members told us we try to do too many things and it would be better to do less and be more strategic in terms of dates and frequency. We have taken notice of this feedback and, while we have narrowed our focus the following pages are packed with details of what is taking place over the next three months: as you will see, there is still a wide variety on offer and we hope there is something for everyone. An Abu Dhabi highlight in 2019 will be the hosting of Special Olympics and, in line with some of the objectives of The Club’s corporate social responsibility programme I am delighted to say that each of our 268 members of Staff and Management are being encouraged to take a ‘paid’ day off to attend and support the event which will take place across the capital between 14th – 21st March. It is vitally important to the athletes that they have encouragement from the stands to help bring out their best performances and our staff will be there representing The Club. As an organisation embedded in Abu Dhabi’s development and one that shares its vision for the future we are proud to show our support of this iconic event and the 7500 participating athletes who will be representing no fewer than 176 countries. Our support along with that of the wider Abu Dhabi community should enable each of them to leave Abu Dhabi having had an experience of a lifetime. 6 TCM Changes in the Management Department We recently said goodbye to our Membership Sales and Relations Executive, Bridie McDonnell, who has been a wonderfully positive and cheerful member of the Management team for nearly 3 years. Bridie has taken up the new job of full time mother to baby Albie, but we hope to see her around The Club- likely in the Family Hub- as she enjoys life as a Club Member once again. For many of you, Bridie will have been the first face you saw when joining The Club either through a show round or when processing your application. Her presence in the office and Management team will certainly be missed and and we’re sure you’ll join us in congratulating Bridie -and her husband Mike- on the arrival of Albie and wishing her the best of luck with her new role. And so, with farewells come new arrivals! Klaudia Rzepczynska has taken up the post of Membership Sales and Relations Executive, and we would like to extend a warm welcome as she joins the team. Klaudia has penned a few words herself to say hello… Hello everyone, For those of you who may not know me, my name is Klaudia and I have recently joined the Club Management team as the Membership Sales and Relations Executive. I have lived in Abu Dhabi for 28 years and have been a Club Member for about 24 of them. I have many great memories of The Club as a child and all throughout my life in Abu Dhabi. I became a Member of my own accord as an adult and have always enjoyed the great events, restaurants, and overall community atmosphere that The Club has to offer. And now, I join The Club behind the scenes! I am very excited to join the team, and be part of the operation. My aim is to continue the great initiatives and work that Bridie carried out, as well as bringing new aspects and ideas to the Membership Department. I am looking forward to the challenging yet rewarding work that comes with the role and I am very excited to meet Members I may not already know, as well as seeing familiar faces around The Club. If you see me around, please do say hello, and if you have any queries or suggestions please email me on klaudia.r@the-club.com Best Wishes, Klaudia Rzepczynska

Your Club Resolution TCM 9 Your Club Resolutions So the New Year is upon us, and many of us will have set or be thinking about setting our resolutions for the year ahead. All too often, we loosely set ourselves a resolution which has no real substance; “I want to lose weight” or “I want to be more social”. These are so flippant that no wonder we often give up before the end of January- because there is absolutely no direction with resolutions like that. Be more specific and be more goals driven. We have set you a number of ‘Club Resolutions’ to help you make the most out of your Membership and get you exploring your club a little more. Christmas at The Club TCM 11 Christmas at The Club - Recycling Decorations So Christmas is once again over and we bid farewell to 2018. Many Members may not realise what planning goes into making The Club the festive wonderland that it is in December. Behind the scenes, Christmas starts for us in September, which is when we bring out all of the previous years’ decorations and assess what we have, what we need, and the theme for each outlet. This year, we decided to recycle as many decorations as possible by upcycling them and using materials we had around The Club to be built into festive decorations. For example, many of the wooden decorations we use are built completely by the team using spare wood and then painting, polishing, and adding Christmas touches. This is all part of our initiative to recycle where possible and as you can see from these pictures, it’s amazing what can be reused and upcycled to create a brand new, festive decoration! Let us know what you thought of our decorations for Christmas 2018 and if you would like to share any feedback or ideas for future festive seasons then please get in touch! 20 TCM Food and Beverage From the Food &Department Beverage Dear Members, I would like to wish you all a very happy New Year and at the same time thank everyone for the support and participation shown towards all of our festive events during December. It was certainly a busy time at The Club and I hope all of you had a fun filled Christmas and were able to sample some of the many F&B offerings that we had during December 2018. I am sure 2019 is going to be an exciting year and we will endeavour to offer all of our Members not only a range of quality dining options but also some exciting promotions and offers throughout the year. As well as offering consistently great value through our standard drinks prices for the whole of 2019 we will be looking to supplement this with additional food and drinks promotions throughout our excellent selection of outlets within the Club. For sports lovers we will only have to wait until February for the annual 6 Nations rugby tournament to kick off and as well as offering great viewing options of the Main Bar, Shore and Sports Bar, we will try to make the viewing even better with some great food and drinks deals. We are also very fortunate this year to be holding the UFC Asian Cup in the UAE and along with the usual football, golf, cricket, tennis and motor racing that we regularly televise it should be a great year for sport. Within the outlets at The Club we have a plan to change each of the menus at least twice during the year and this coupled with our ongoing and new food promotions we feel you will always have a great selection of quality dining options at very affordable prices. At the same time please remember that we offer some excellent outside catering facilities from The Club and are always available to discuss your needs whether it is a simple food pick up or a large banquet or outside event. I hope our entertainment offering will continue to be popular and we have already signed up two of our regular artists for the first quarter of the year to perform live in the Main Bar and at The Shore. At the same time our events team are working hard to offer a whole year of exciting activity right across The Club to suit as many of our Members as possible. Please continue to give us your support as well as your feedback which we truly value and if there is anything specific that you would like us to consider please get in touch either by email or drop in personally for a chat. Wishing all of our Members and families a fun filled and prosperous 2019. Best Regards, David Gould Food and Beverage Manager
