Design Process • Outline problems with design and functionality of other Zoo’s signage system • Analyze design brief requirements (Materials, Use of symbols, Corporate considerations, Production) • Develop project schedule • Allocate budget • Organize design members • Research current trends of zoos • Determine number of signs for 1) Animals, 2) Navigation, 3) Other facilities • Develop concepts for design of signs
Analyze Design Brief Requirements • A consultation with the client to assess their biggest concerns and needs; a thurough assessment and analysis of the entire grounds of the zoo’s site to establish placements of signs, animals, lavatories, shops, cafes, etc; • Research on conditions on which signs can be made and integrated on site, from the concept of what and how the designs will be, function, and look, to the manufactoring (which companies that will take the team’s concept to physicality) • Costs, of the team’s artistic time, and subcontracting (to the manufacturing) • Health and Safety, for visitors, staff, and animals • A final consultation with client of all entailed for the job for final approval, and confir- mation on contracts before production can commence. • The look and feel of the actual physical postings of signs, the designs, standard, and non-material that’s conducive to the zoo’s grounds, which includes the health and safety standards of what ‘goes’, and doesn’t.

Concepts for Designs of Signs Laughing Kookaburra Dacelo Novaeguineae Country of Origin Eastern Australia Description The Laughing Kookaburra is a stocky bird of about 45 cm (18 in) in length, with a large head, a prominent brown eye, and a very large bill. The sexes are very similar, although the female averages larger and has less blue to the rump than the male. They have a white or cream-colored body and head with a dark brown stripe through each eye and more faintly over the top of the head. The wings and back are brown with sky blue spots on the shoulders. The tail is rusty reddish- orange with dark brown bars and white tips on the feathers. The heavy bill is black on top and bone colored on the bottom. Feeding Kookaburras are carnivorous. They will eat lizards, snakes, insects, mice, other small birds, and raw meat. The most social birds will accept handouts from humans and will take raw or cooked meat (even if at high temperature) from on or near open-air barbecues left unattended. It is generally not advised to feed the birds too regularly as meat alone does not include calcium and other nutrients essential to the bird. Remainders of mince on the bird's beak can fester and cause problems for the bird. Habitat Kookaburras occupy woodland territories (including forests) in loose family groups, and their laughter serves the same purpose as a great many other bird calls—to demarcate territorial borders. Most species of Kookaburra tend to live in family units, with offspring helping the parents hunt and care for the next generation of offspring. Signage for Animal Enclosures
