TAMPINES NORTH PRIMARY SCHOOL 30 TAMPINES AVENUE 9, SINGAPORE 529565 Tel: 67854329 Fax: 67863117 2 January 2020 Ref: TNPS/P5-6/2020/01 From the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents/Guardians, Welcome to back to 2020. I do hope that the holidays had provided opportunity for you to bond with your children. We ended off 2019 with the closure to our 25th Anniversary Celebrations. I am sure the children would have shared their experiences with you. We would also like to wish our Primary 6 students all the best in their future endeavours as they move on to their secondary schools to start their next important milestone. We would like to welcome our Primary 1 students and parents to Tampines North Primary family. We wish them a meaningful journey in the school. The focus for 2020 is “Exploring Possibilities and Embracing Change”. This year, we would provide more opportunities for our students to discover and learn new knowledge, hone their skills especially in the development of social emotional competencies and opportunities to embrace and exhibit the school values - Responsibility, Respect, Resilience, Integrity and Care. More details of our new initiatives or enhanced programmes will be shared during our Meet-the-Parents sessions in February. The attached calendar provides the dates. We do hope you will make time to meet us for the session. Home-School partnership is important to your child’s development. Our students succeed when schools and parents work hand in hand to support students in learning self-management skills, taking responsibility and building resilience. We seek your support to help us focus on these areas at home as well so that our students can be independent and take ownership of themselves. For instance, allow them to pack their own bags, teach them to have a timetable to manage their time after school, allow them to forget and take responsibility for their actions, expect them to keep their room and table clean and seek their help to assist with the housework. These skills provide them the fundamentals to lead an enriching life. I have attached an article on ‘Building resilience in your children” for your reading pleasure. Alternatively, you can visit https://www.healthhub.sg for more articles on understanding your child and helping through primary school. May we work together to positively impact our children in 2020. Here’s wishing everyone a “Happy New Year”! Thank you. Your Partner in Education, __________________________ Mrs Ratna Elangovan Principal Tampines North Primary School 1

Please ensure that your child brings a working Oral Digital Thermometer (ODT). ODTs can be purchased from the school bookshop at $ 4.50. If your child is unwell, we seek your cooperation to exercise social responsibility by seeking medical attention for your child and ensuring that your child is well before returning to school. Primary 1 students will issued their thermometers on the first week of school. We would also like to seek your co-operation as we maintain vigilance in keeping infectious diseases at bay. If your child is not feeling well, please do seek medical attention and not send him/her to school. In a case of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) or Chickenpox, please send your child back to school only when the doctor has certified him/her fit. We would also appreciate it if you could keep the Form Teacher informed of the situation. We maintain strict procedures to ensure the security of the school and safety of our pupils in school. Please note that parents are not allowed at any time in the classrooms nor the canteen. If you are waiting for your child, please do so at the designated areas. We seek your co- operation to adhere to the instructions of our security officers if you need to enter the school for official reasons during school hours. Please display the visitor’s pass prominently when you are on the school premises. We also seek your kind understanding in working together with the school in ensuring the safety of all our students coming to and leaving from school. We would like to remind all parents to 4
observe the following road safety practices when driving into the school compound and also to remind your children of the traffic rules and good practices to observe when walking to / leaving the school. For Drivers Reduce vehicular speed and stay alert for pedestrians in the school zone (speed limit is 40 km/h). Cooperate with the traffic marshals to ensure overall safety and smooth traffic flow within the school. Be advised not to violate traffic rules by driving recklessly or making illegal manoeuvres such as turning into the school from the outer lane(s) of the road. Allow your child to alight only at the designated drop-off point in front of the school foyer. Remind your child to alight from the left side of car as quickly as possible while being alert to the traffic around them. Drivers are advised to follow the traffic flow within the school; illegal U-turns are not allowed as it endangers students and other drivers. If your child must cycle to school, parents are to ensure that he/she is a competent cyclist and is very clear of the safe cycling rules. We look forward to your support, understanding and co-operation in managing the traffic situation. 7. BUILDING THE SOCIAL EMOTIONAL COMPETENCIES The school takes student absenteeism very seriously. When a child is absent from school, their learning is affected. We believe that every child can learn and wants to learn. Hence, we will monitor student’s attendance very closely. Our Discipline Masters will contact you if we notice an area of concern. Should your child be absent from school, we seek your help to call the general office or inform your child’s form teacher via email. Students are required to submit their relevant documents explaining their absence promptly to their form teacher when they are back in school. We seek your cooperation to ensure that your child attends school regularly. 8. HEALTHY CHOICE In Tampines North, Every Child Matters! As a school, we strive to ensure that all our students’ minds and bodies are ready for the challenges of each school day. The school will continue to participate in the “Health Promoting School Canteen” (HPSC) to enhance the availability of healthier food and beverage choices. We have had some discussions with the canteen vendors with regards to a healthier menu in 2020. We hope the revised menu will help to nurture healthy eating habits with our students. Stall Number 3 will also have vegetarian options for our students. We seek your support to join us in our efforts to provide our students with a head start in leading a healthy and active lifestyle. 9. UPDATE OF STUDENT PARTICULARS 5
Every year, the school conducts an updating exercise of student particulars. If there are any changes, please alert the form teacher of your child. Alternatively, you may call the General office at 67854329 to provide us the information. We seek your support to ensure that your contact details are updated to facilitate our communications with you regarding your child. 10. STUDENT LEARNING SPACE (SLS) We believe on leveraging the use of technology to make teaching and learning more engaging and meaningful for our students. P2 – P6 The SLS is an online platform with tools and curriculum-aligned resources for all students to learn at their own pace and collaboratively. With the SLS, students can take greater ownership of their learning and pick up skills and habits that prepare them for lifelong learning. Teachers will also use the SLS to complement classroom teaching and learning. All Pri 2 to Pri 6 SLS accounts will be reset as part of the school’s security measure as of 2 January, 2020. The students will create their own new passwords under the guidance of their teachers. 16. P5 ADVENTURE CAMP 2020 As part of providing a holistic education at Tampines North Primary School, the PE/CCA Department is organising a three-day residential adventure camp. The adventure camp is part of the National Outdoor Adventure Education Masterplan which MOE has put in place to strengthen the holistic development of all our students. Due to the haze conditions in 2019, the original Pri 4 Adventure Camp has been postponed to 2020 as Pri 5 Adventure Camp.
