Supporting Leicestershire Crimestoppers Presentation by Bill Cullen (East Midlands Regional Chair) & Rob Vivian (Leicestershire Constabulary)
What is Crimestoppers? • Crimestoppers Trust was founded by our Chairman, Lord Ashcroft, in 1988 • Crimestoppers is an independent charity which helps the police and other law enforcement agencies to solve crimes, making communities safer • We do this by operating the 24/7 telephone number 0800 555 111 which people can ring to pass on information about crimes anonymously • Information can also be sent online via our website. www.crimestoppers-uk.org
The Crimestoppers Network • London HQ covering core business functions • 24/7 Call Bureau staffed by professional call handlers based in Surrey • Regional staff at various locations in the UK (Sue Langley – Leicestershire representative) • 44 Volunteer Committees covering the whole of the UK (including Channel Islands and Isle of Man) run by around 500 volunteers • A Crimestoppers Coordinator based at each UK police force.
It works! Since 1988 the work of Crimestoppers has led to: More than 107,394 arrests and charges with over £115m of goods being recovered and over £210m worth of drugs being seized. (Crimestoppers statistics April 2010 to March 2011) 22 people arrested every day from information supplied by Crimestoppers. Nationally 8264 people were arrested and charged from the 95,276 pieces of actionable information received with £25,339,693 worth of illegal drugs seized and £3,155,704 worth of goods recovered. Locally in Leicestershire Nationally actionable information received is up by 1% but in Leicestershire it is up by 11% to 1433 and 174 people have been arrested and charged.
Why Crimestoppers ? There are a number of motives for callers using Crimestoppers. • Fear of reprisals. • Lack of trust in reporting incidents to police. • A dislike of the police and the authorities.. • Reward The majority of information passed is about neighbourhood issues affecting local residents.
