Greeting and Welcome Prelude Opening Hymn 401: "The God of Abraham Praise" Leoni 1 The God of Abraham praise, 3 There dwells the Lord, our King, who reigns enthroned above; the Lord, our Righteousness, Ancient of everlasting days, triumphant o'er the world and sin, and God of love; the Prince of Peace; the Lord, the great I AM, on Zion's sacred height by earth and heaven confessed: his kingdom he maintains, we bow and bless the sacred Name and, glorious with his saints in light, for ever blest. for ever reigns. 2 He by himself hath sworn: we on his oath depend; we shall, on eagles-wings upborne, to heaven ascend: we shall behold his face, we shall his power adore, and sing the wonders of his grace for evermore. The Penitential Order BCP 351 Celebrant: Bless the Lord who forgives our sins. People: God’s mercy endures forever. Celebrant: Jesus said, ”The first commandment is this: Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is the only Lord. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these”. Mark 12:29-31
The Confession Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. All: God of all mercy, we confess that we have sinned against you, opposing your will in our lives. We have denied your goodness in each other, in our- selves, and in the world you have created. We repent of the evil that enslaves us, the evil we have done, and the evil done on our behalf. Forgive, restore, and strengthen us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. Celebrant: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. Kyrie: S84 David Hurd Kyrie eleison. sung three times Christe eleison. sung three times Kyrie eleison. sung three times The Word of God Celebrant: God be with you. People: And also with you. Celebrant: Let us pray. The Celebrant says the Collect (Prayer) of the Day BCP 218 O God, whose glory it is always to have mercy: Be gracious to all who have gone astray from your ways, and bring them again with penitent hearts and stead- fast faith to embrace and hold fast the unchangeable truth of your Word, Jesus Christ your Son; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. Genesis 17:1 - 7, 15 - 16 Common English Bible translation (CEB) When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am El Shaddai. Walk with me and be trustworthy. I will make a covenant be- tween us and I will give you many, many descendants.” Abram fell on his face, and God said to him, “But me, my covenant is with you; you will be the ancestor of many nations. And because I have made you the ancestor of many nations, your name will no longer be Abram but Abraham. I will make you very fertile. I will produce nations from you, and kings will come from you. I will set up my covenant with you and your descendants after you in every generation as an enduring covenant. I will be your God and your descendants’ God after you. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s People. People: Thanks be to God.
Sequence Hymn: “Now quit your care (St. 1)” Quitezz, Pasteurs Now quit your care and anxious fear and worry; for schemes are vain and fretting brings no gain. Lent calls to prayer, to trust and dedication; God brings new beauty nigh; reply, reply, reply with love to love most high; reply, reply, reply with love to love most high. The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark 8:31 - 38 People: Glory to you, O Christ. Common English Bible translation (CEB) Then Jesus began to teach his disciples: “The Human One must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and the legal experts, and be killed, and then, after three days, rise from the dead.” He said this plainly. But Pe- ter took hold of Jesus and, scolding him, began to correct him. Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, then sternly corrected Peter: “Get behind me, Satan. You are not thinking God’s thoughts but human thoughts.” After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me and be- cause of the good news will save them. Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? What will people give in exchange for their lives? Whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this unfaithful and sinful generation, the Human One will be ashamed of that person when he comes in the Father’s glory with the holy angels.” Deacon or Priest: The Gospel of our Savior. People: Praise to you, O Christ. The Homily Brother Lucas Hall
The Nicene Creed BCP 358 We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Proph- ets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People That we might become the Gospel we proclaim, and trusting in God’s steadfast love throughout this season of Lent, let us pray to God as we say, “And we put our trust in You.” For all followers of Christ in every land and nation, for Anglicans around the globe, and for those who seek after God but have not yet been found. That in our words, worship, and work, we will honor the covenant of baptism, we pray to you, O God: And we put our trust in You. Faithful God, we lift up Michael, our presiding bishop, Susan, Jennifer, and Porter, our bishops, for our clergy and lay leaders, and for all the people of St. George’s. That the prayer and fasting of Lent may bring a new springtime of faith in our Church, we pray to you, O God: And we put our trust in You. For the nations and peoples of the earth, especially our own, and for all who struggle with attraction to control, wealth, and power. That we may become signs and instruments of the Kingdom where all are free, we pray to you, O God: And we put our trust in You. For all who have no choice but to fast, forced into the silence of their thoughts, who have no home but the Kingdom to come. For those sick and suffering in the pandemic, and for those who are alone, and for all others on our hearts, silently or aloud. Silence We pray to you, O God: And we put our trust in You.
God our promised land, in whom all peoples may find a home, we bless you for the Patawomek and Manahoac people who first knew this land on which our church sits. That we may learn to share this earth, which belongs only to You, and to sit at the feet of our elders, we pray to you, O God: And we put our trust in You. God who gives life to the dead and calls into existence things that do not exist, we pray for those who have died, and those who out of Christ’s death will be reborn in baptism, that your will for all may be fulfilled. That angels may lead all our beloved into the light of paradise, we pray to you, O God: And we put our trust in You. The Celebrant adds a concluding Collect Celebrant: Gracious and loving God, you are in the water that restores our soul and in the night when we lose our way. Make your presence known to us as we journey through our days, as we discern and work, as we grieve, pray and hope. Accept the prayers of your people and breathe your life into us as we seek to do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Peace Celebrant: The peace of Christ be always with you. People: And also with you. All are now invited to exchange a sign of peace with a wave or bow. Announcements Praise God from whom all blessings flow. We invite you to share your gifts in support of our ministry within and beyond our congregation. You may place your gift in the offering plate. You can also give online (bit.ly/stggive) or text to give (send a text message with the dollar amount [e.g. $50] to: 540.701.4133).
Hymn 149: “Eternal Lord of love, behold your church” Old 124th 1 Eternal Lord of love, behold your Church, walking once more the pilgrim way of Lent, led by your cloud by day, by night your fire, moved by your love and toward your presence bent; far off yet here--the goal of all desire. 2 So daily dying to the way of self, so daily living to your way of love, we walk the road, Lord Jesus, that you trod, knowing ourselves baptized into your death; so we are dead and live with you in God. 3 If dead in you, so in you we arise; you the firstborn of all the faithful dead; and as through stony ground the green shoots break, glorious in springtime dress of leaf and flower, so in the Father's glory shall we wake. Celebrant: As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Prayer for the Power of the Spirit Among the People of God God of all power and love, we give thanks for your unfailing presence and the hope you provide in times of uncertainty and loss. Send your Holy Spirit to enkindle in us your holy fire. Revive us to live as Christ’s body in the world: a people who pray, wor- ship, learn, break bread, share life, heal neighbors, bear good news, seek justice, rest and grow in the Spirit. Wherever and however we gather, unite us in common prayer and send us in common mission, that we and the whole creation might be restored and renewed, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Solemn Prayer in place of the blessing during Lent Celebrant: In body or in spirit, let us bow down before Almighty God. kneel as able Keep this your family, Lord, with your never-failing mercy, that relying solely on the help of your heavenly grace, they may be upheld by your divine protection; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Dismissal The congregation responds Thanks be to God! Postlude
A message from our partners at Micah Ecumenical Ministries (St. George’s is one of the nine member congregations) Dear Friend, For 73 days this year, Virginians shel- tered in place under the Governor's "stay at home" order. But the reality for almost 200 neighbors within the Micah community was that they had no shelter in which to place. Through the love of the churches, Micah committed to remaining a lighthouse in the storm – to securing emergency, socially-distanced motel rooms for our vulner- able neighbors. The doors of Micah Hospitality Center stayed open for showers, clean clothes, and other basic provisions. Thousands of hot meals were delivered. Transitions into permanent housing (51 and counting) were expedited. And even a pandemic couldn’t stop the creative ways Micah helped our neighbors increase their income. Battle buddies showed up, distributing cleaning supplies, masks, and hand sanitizers. The churches of Fredericksburg showed up, even if that meant gathering in a parking lot six feet apart. Our prayer remains, if only for a season, that we get everyone off the street and no one has to return to the street. That all of our neighbors continue to experi- ence the security and stability of shelter, and eventually a permanent home. That they don’t just survive. That they thrive. Here are some ways you can make an impact: $15 provides a night of winter shelter for one person $25 buys a tent or sleeping bag $30 keeps someone in housing for a day $45 keeps someone in a socially distanced shelter bed for a night $100 buys a night of respite care for a person recovering from a hospital visit $200 a day sparks the spiritual walk of new disciples $350 a day provides basic needs of people living on the street $900 covers the average rental deposit $1500 bridges someone to work $5,000 a month supports the missional and spiritual community that is forming among our neighbors Thank you for loving your neighbor!
