Giving Life, One Donation at a Time

You’re probably not surprised to see an article asking you to donate blood. We’re in a pandemic after all, right?
Surprisingly, patients ill with COVID-19 aren’t creating the shortage of blood, reports Gulf Coast Regional Blood
spokesperson, Kevin Shipley. It’s all of those responsible citizens staying home. It makes sense if you think about it. As
we avoid extra trips out and non-essential social situations, we’ve started to make it a habit to postpone those things we
should do, and the Blood Center is feeling the effects.
The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center services 26 counties, which includes Houston and the Houston Medical Center.
Though our large population has its fair share of pandemic patients and trauma needs, the greatest demand for blood
comes from everyday, necessary medical procedures like chemotherapy and childbirth, among others.
It’s safe to say that the need isn’t going away. Did you know that 1 out of 7 people benefit from donations but only 1
out of 20 actually donate? Of those that do, most do so less than once a year. We have some room for improvement
here, people! Each blood donation can benefit up to three patients, and as of June 15, 2020, all donations are tested for
the COVID-19 antibody.
While Community Blood Drives are still available, you can schedule a donation time that works for you at one of
the fourteen area Neighborhood Donor Centers which allow for online appointments, reminders, and well-equipped
facilities, all socially distanced and sanitized for your protection.
So, as you wrap up yet one more Zoom call, take a minute to visit www.giveblood.org and schedule your donation
today. If getting out of the house still brings a twinge of worry, these folks have been wearing gloves, wiping everything
down, and washing hands since 1975, and saving countless lives in the process.

A New Approach to Dementia
The cause of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-based diseases is poorly understood, but when a family member is no
longer able to remember names, recognize faces, or care for themselves, a solution is essential. The necessity for
continuous care is common and a growing trend across the globe.
In Texas, Sundance Memory Care Communities offer a unique approach. While many facilities solely address care for
the physical person, Sundance uses a Montessori approach to address much, much more. Yes, Montessori, like that great
little school you sent your kids to way back when.

respect, dignity, and equality.
Beyond services to its residents, Sundance offers education programs at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels
designed for family members and loved ones, guardians, estate planners, as well as industry professionals seeking
continuing education credits. These online and, when available, in-person courses are a great way to get a better
understanding of what dementia is, gain insights about leading research, and help create strategies for care for a loved
one.

As for many businesses, 2020 was a challenging year for them. They were on track for a record year until the shutdown.
April was incredibly slow. They knew that no matter what, they wanted to continue to pay their employees, so they
decided to stop paying themselves until they just could not anymore. They applied for and received a PPP loan. “By the
grace of God, from April-June we were able to continue to pay all employees, and because of the PPP funds we were able
to back pay ourselves. The PPP funds allowed us to stop operating/functioning in panic mode, and we were able to take
a deep breath.” Business picked up in June and remained steady for the duration of 2020.
Their largest accomplishments in 2020 included doing more volume in residential cleaning compared to 2019, and they
did not miss paying a single employee or lay off any employees during the pandemic.
Steam Commander did not have the year they had planned, but they were able to continue to operate with a steady
stream of business. “Our customers continued to trust and support us and continued to refer us to friends and family.
No matter what happens in the future, we know who holds our future. He has brought us this far, and we know He will
not drop us now.”
