It’s easy to get here, too – Southampton is just over an hour’s drive from London and a short distance from Bournemouth, Portsmouth and Winchester. Shoppers won’t be left disappointed by the selection of goods on offer. If you are looking for somewhere to eat, then head to the dining complex located next to Westquay, offering a whole host of eateries, from American-style diners, Mexican tapas or Thai cuisine to Italian restaurants. With so many different cuisines and price ranges to choose from, there’s bound to be something for everyone. 7
FIRST PORT OF CALL The city has a strong maritime heritage, and the Mayflower set sail from here for the New World in 1620. Medieval walls nestle among modern developments to create a unique waterfront environment, which includes the Ocean Village marina. Southampton’s port is renowned worldwide for its container ships and prestigious cruise liners, while the city’s SeaCity Museum celebrates the importance of the sea to Southampton’s past and present. 8
CULTURE Southampton also offers the south coast’s biggest theatre, featuring all of the big West End tours; four cinemas, from arthouse to high- end; and art galleries, including Solent’s very own Showcase Gallery. 9
PLACES OF INTEREST Everything you will need during your time in Southampton can be found within a short distance of the Solent University campus. However, if you do fancy a change of scenery, you’ll be spoilt for choice by the variety of towns, cities and tourist attractions on offer in the surrounding areas including: • historic Winchester • Marwell Zoological Centre • Stonehenge ancient monument • the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu • the New Forest National Park • watersports at Calshot Activities Centre. 10
SPORT The Ageas Bowl is home to Hampshire County Cricket Club, while successful Premier League club Southampton FC is an official partner of the University – and St Mary’s Stadium is just a few minutes’ walk from our campus and student residences. THE BIG OUTDOORS When you want a change from city-centre life, it’s only a short trip to the golden beaches of Bournemouth or the miles of stunning Hampshire coastline. A ferry across to the Isle of Wight provides a lovely day trip and the New Forest National Park offers acres of open woodland to explore on foot, bike or horseback. 11
CATERING We offer a full catering package at the University’s The Dock restaurant on East Park Terrace campus, with a weekly menu – using freshly sourced produce – tailored to a wide variety of dietary requirements. We can also provide packed lunches for your excursion days, as well as on arrival/departure. 12

HOW TO FIND US Just 75 miles from London, Southampton has excellent transport links by road, rail and air. Visitors from overseas or cities in the north of England, Scotland, Ireland or the Channel Islands can fly directly into Southampton International Airport, while London is just an hour and a half away by car or train. The nearest railway station is Southampton Central Station, which is a 15–25-minute walk from the University’s student residences and just five minutes from our campus classrooms.
